Clicking through to that article gave me a pop-up for managing cookies in compliance with EU GDPR regulations. The various sub-headers with individual toggles were:

Sale of Personal Data
Targeting Cookies
Functional Cookies
Performance Cookies

Store and/or access information on a device
Actively scan device characteristics for identification
Use precise geolocation data

Personalised ads and content, ad and content measurement, audience insights and product development
Develop and improve products
Create a personalised ads profile
Select personalised ads
Create a personalised content profile
Select personalised content
Measure content performance
Apply market research to generate audience insights
Select basic ads
Measure ad performance

It's nice of them to give me the choice, but do go on, tell us how terrible Amazon is!

So much of this shit could be fixed by just banning targeted ads and the creation of user profiles completely. They shouldn't be allowed to log anything about me without my express consent and a clear explanation of what exactly they're logging and what will happen with that data, and they should pay me for the privilege (I want to turn each of my data points into NFTs and track them throughout the ad-surveillance ecosystem and charge accordingly). If they really want profiles they can find ideal demographic representatives and hire them to serve as universal user profiles.

Michael Hudson and Yanis Varoufakis are two people you want to listen to.

Hudson has many talks on YouTube, including a biweekly webcast that goes over these topics. You can't go wrong, Hudson has been researching & writing about 'Super Imperialism' for 60 years.

Varoufakis too, his talks & book on techno-feudalism very clearly spell out the problem of Internet "enclosures."

"Why I Don't Read Reddit"

Postby Elvis » Wed Feb 28, 2024 2:57 am

Great insights here. I better understand now why I avoid Reddit, even as it appears near the top of my search results.

Is worse than we thought.
