Help Finding an Old Thread

I think there even was a thread created for posting requests to find old threads. ... but I can't even find that old thread. LOL

I'm looking for a thread here from long ago about actual govt proposals to lie to the populace to save it. I think there may have been examples of the idea of an accidental chemical release and using social media to lie about it in a way that the spin implied would save lives.

I feel so silly for asking for help with this but all my ham-fisted search attempts so far have proven fruitless.

Anyone? Bueller? :partydance: :jumping: :hug1: :jumping: :partydance:

Can you guess at a year? How many posts? Who started it? Who was responding? Other examples of the practice that may have been given? Whether anyone used a catchphrase for the practice?

Howdy Jack! Thanks for asking. I feel like I came back to the thread in question many many times over the years since. I believe it was from between 2006-2010 or so. I can't recall many details really. I don't think I started it (but maybe) and I'm not sure if I even commented in the thread or what other users posted in the thread.

It was mainly an official govt report - or maybe a whitepaper by a thinktank or NGO - about the importance of manipulating news stories for ulterior purposes. I don't think it gave any verifiable real world examples.

I know this is so ridiculously vague but I've tried searching and found lots of other cool, long-forgotten threads but none of them appear to be what I am trying to find.

I've also searched all of the places I've stored notes about such parapolitical RI thread threads of interest over the years but to no avail.

This is so frustrating not being able to remember even one detail that might help me find it.

Heh - no, I still haven't found the thread ... I just found the other old "Help-Me-Find:___" threads.

For some reason the site has been borked in Google searches since the reorganization, but it still works with Duckduckgo.

A search like 'site: rigorousintuition.ca how bad is global warming' returns the correct thread with DDG, but nothing with Google.

It's almost as if we've been (gasp!) cancelled by Google.

You're welcome.

The company at the heart of that discussion was 'Strategic Communication Laboratories' - who later birthed 'Cambridge Analytica', no less.

'a pandemic of epic proportions.'

Interesting read - thanks for bringing it up. :wink

Wasn't it about the time this thread came out that the US government authorised the Pentagon to lie to the US people and the world in general for National Security reasons?

There was also a thread about that, iirc, because we all assumed it was true and people posted plenty of historical examples but the point of the story was there would no longer be any potential come back for the lies. Truth was finally, officially, out of style.

(BTW Top job Alloneword.)
