Zelenskyy joins Canadian Parliament’s ovation to 98-year-old veteran who fought with Nazis

The man was part of SS Galichina, a unit whose history has been whitewashed by veterans groups in the West

By Lev Golinkin
September 24, 2023

The Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation on Friday to a 98-year-old immigrant from Ukraine who fought in a Third Reich military formation accused of war crimes.

The elderly veteran, Yaroslav Hunka was honored during a session in which President Volodomyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine addressed the lawmakers to thank them for their support since Russia invaded his country, saying Canada has always been on “the bright side of history.” The Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota — who had compared Zelenskyy to Winston Churchill — recognized a “veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of 98.”

The assembly then rose to applaud a man in a khaki uniform standing on the balcony, who saluted, according to this screenshot from Canadian television.

The man was identified as Hunka by the Associated Press, which published a photograph showing Zelenskyy smiling and raising a fist during the ovation.

The AP caption described Hunka as having “fought with the First Ukrainian Division in World War II before later immigrating to Canada.” The First Ukrainian Division is another name for the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, the military wing of the Nazi Party; the unit was also called SS Galichina.

This is the same unit that is honored by controversial monuments in Canada, Australia, and, as the Forward recently exposed, the suburbs of Philadelphia and Detroit. Jewish groups have called for their removal.

After a Forward article in August that was followed by coverage in the Philadelphia Inquirer, local television stations and other news outlets, the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia temporarily covered the monument located in a cemetery in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, pending discussions with local Jewish leaders. The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and regional branches of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League had expressed outrage about the monument.

Formed in 1943, SS Galichina was composed of recruits from the Galicia region in western Ukraine. The unit was armed and trained by the Nazis and commanded by German officers. In 1944, the division was visited by SS head Heinrich Himmler, who spoke of the soldiers’ willingness to slaughter Poles.”

Three months earlier, SS Galichina subunits perpetrated what is known as the Huta Pieniacka massacre, burning 500 to 1,000 Polish villagers alive.

During the Nuremberg Trials, the International Military Tribunal declared the Waffen-SS to be a criminal organization responsible for mass atrocities including the “persecution and extermination of the Jews, brutalities and killings in concentration camps, excesses in the administration of occupied territories, the administration of the slave labor program, and the mistreatment and murder of prisoners.”

After the war, thousands of SS Galichina veterans were allowed to resettle in the West, around 2,000 of them in Canada. By then, the unit was universally known as the First Ukrainian Division.

A blog by an association of its veterans, called “Combatant News” in Ukrainian, includes an autobiographical entry by a Yaroslav Hunka that says he volunteered to join the division in 1943 and several photographs of him during the war. The captions say the pictures show Hunka during SS artillery training in Munich in December 1943 and in Neuhammer (now Świętoszów), Poland, the site of Himmler’s visit.

In posts to the blog dated 2011 and 2010, Hunka describes 1941 to 1943 as the happiest years of his life and compares the veterans of his unit, who were scattered across the world, to Jews.

Canada has two monuments to the unit, one in a Wayville, which is outside Toronto, the other in Edmonton. Canadian Jewish organizations have called for their removal.

It is unclear whether Zelenskyy knew that Hunka fought with the unit. In 2021, the Ukrainian president joined the governments of Israel and Germany in denouncing a march honoring SS Galichina in Kyiv.

Relatively swift developments on this.

BREAKING: Canadian speaker Anthony Rota has resigned after calling a Ukrainian Nazi a “hero.”

Total humiliation.

It gets even worse. Poland is now moving to extradite 98 year old Yaroslav Hunka, the Nazi who was praised in the World Stage.

“In view of the scandalous events in the Canadian Parliament, which involved honoring, in the presence of President Zelenskyy, a member of the criminal Nazi SS Galizien formation, I have taken steps towards the possible extradition of this man to Poland,” said Poland’s Education Minister Przemysław Czarnek.

BREAKING: Poland is now seeking extradition of Yaroslav Hunka, the 98-year-old Nazi who "fought Russia" and received a standing ovation from the Canadian Parliament—including Justin Trudeau and Volodymyr Zelensky—to stand trial in Poland for war crimes.

This comes as Canada’s speaker of the house, Anthony Rota, resigned from the House of Commons after declaring Hunka “a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero..."

Hunka served with the First Ukrainian Division, which was previously known as the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Nazi Party’s Schutzstaffel (SS) military branch.

Absolute humiliation for Canada.

NAFO seems to have wrapped up.

Postby JackRiddler » Mon Oct 23, 2023 6:11 pm

The NAFO boys are no longer crawling in the hundreds on every post about Ukraine, but there's barely any posts about Ukraine any more. The new party line on it seems to be shhh! Be still, for the Americans have yet to put together the new $100 billion quadruple war* spending package (the only thing that will pass the House in the rest of this year, it seems), with 60 bn of that earmarked for the Kiev Arms Laundromat. As for the Crack OSINT brigades, for now they've moved on to explaining in finest forensic bullshitese why Israel didn't bomb the hospital they'd already bombed before and warned they would bomb again. Those other bombs, sure, but not the one that killed 500 in a second and prompted millions into the streets of Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, South Asia, even Washington and Chicago (as would have inevitably happened).

@ggreenwald

Look at this. You're seeing all the DC media warmongers who insisted Ukraine will win, that US/NATO must arm Ukraine until all Russian troops are out...

Now turn around and pretend they never said that, as they switch to the new Biden message: We achieved much. Time to end...
---
This was so predictable - and predicted - early, but everyone who said it was branded a "Russian agent":

The US/NATO/Ukraine/Russia could have done a deal early on. Now, after billions and tens of thousands of lives wasted, US will beg Russia to be happy with 18% of Ukraine.

Yes but a subset will profit, and have profited, immensely from activities in the Ukraine, historically, presently, and moving forward.

War bolsters business AND strategic power grabs/acquisitions for those with 'skin in the game'; for everyone else, it's minimally tragic, and generally, crimes against humanity.

Been saying this for years but the CIA ignited the Ukraine conflict because they needed a new place to launder millions upon millions, as a black hole for weapons to be covertly trafficked after the US pulled out of Afghanistan and to create a new "blowback" boogeyman"

CIA Built "12 Secret Spy Bases" In Ukraine & Waged Shadow War For Last Decade, Bombshell NYT Report Confirms

On Sunday The New York Times published an explosive and very belated full admission that US intelligence has not only been instrumental in Ukraine wartime decision-making, but has established and financed high tech command-and-control spy centers, and was doing so long prior to the Feb. 24 Russian invasion of two years ago.

Among the biggest revelations is that the program was established a decade ago and spans three different American presidents. The Times says the CIA program to modernize Ukraine's intelligence services has "transformed" the former Soviet state and its capabilities into "Washington’s most important intelligence partners against the Kremlin today."

This has included the agency having secretly trained and equipped Ukrainian intelligence officers spanning back to just after the 2014 Maidan coup events, as well constructing a network of 12 secret bases along the Russian border—work which began eight years ago. These intelligence bases, from which Russian commanders' communications can be swept up and Russian spy satellites monitored, are being used launch and track cross-border drone and missile attacks on Russian territory.

Update on the conflict in Ukraine for February 25, 2024...

- Russian forces have cleared Avdeevka, taking over a thousand Ukrainian soldiers prisoner, illustrating the disorganized nature of Ukraine’s withdrawal;

- The US Department of Defense admits essential supporting elements for sustaining US weapon systems transferred to Ukraine were never provided, thus inhibiting the effective use of US arms by Ukrainians;

- A fighting force makes up a small percentage of an overall military service because of the large amount of support infantry require on the modern battlefield. Without these supporting elements, a fighting force cannot sustain combat especially against a better supported force;

- US military equipment is especially complex to sustain and maintain on the battlefield, a fact illustrated by US purchases of Russian helicopters for Afghan forces because US helicopters were too difficult to fly, maintain, and sustain;

- The end game for Ukraine is particularly bleak considering the attritional nature of the conflict, Russia’s ability to outproduce Ukraine and its allies, and the unrealistic objectives Ukraine and its Western sponsors are attempting to achieve;

- Attempts to focus on Russian military shortcomings while ignoring Ukrainian military shortcomings produces a fatally flawed perception of the conflict disallowing both the means and objectives of the fighting to be realistically evaluated;

What we know about the shooting at a concert venue near Moscow

Russian news agencies reported multiple casualties after a shooting incident at a concert venue near Moscow on Friday.
Here's what is known about the shooting so far:
-Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk near Moscow on Friday evening during a concert of the band "Picnic".
-Forty people are reported dead and more than 100 wounded after the shooting as of 1915GMT, Russian state news agencies said, citing Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).
-An eyewitness told Reuters reporters outside the venue that automatic weapons had been used.
-Video posted online by Russian news agencies showed billowing clouds of smoke and flames rising from the venue building.
-TASS reported that people remained inside the building, which is almost completely engulfed in flames and that others were trapped on the roof.
-Special units of Russia's national guard as well as police and firefighters are on the scene, TASS said.
-Moscow's mayor cancelled all large-scale public events over the weekend.

US Embassy Warned Americans to Avoid Moscow Concerts Weeks Before Attacks

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow warned Americans to avoid going to concerts in Moscow just weeks before gunmen launched an attack at a concert venue on Friday.
Just weeks prior on March 7, the U.S. Embassy issued a warning telling Americans to not go to concert venues.
"The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours," the alert reads.
The alert urged Americans to avoid crowds, monitor local media for updates and be aware of their surroundings in Russia.
It remained unclear what prompted the warning, and whether it was related to the attack on Friday. It also remained unknown if any Americans were present at the concert.
Americans have long been warned against traveling to Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine, which has exacerbated tensions between Moscow and the U.S., as the Biden administration has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, sending it billions of dollars of humanitarian and military aid.
Other Western embassies issued similar warnings.
Russian President Vladimr Putin, however, dismissed the alerts as an attempt to intimidate Russians, the AP reported.

Russia Detains Suspects after a Moscow Concert Hall Attack Leaves at Least 93 Dead

Eleven people have been detained after gunmen stormed a concert hall in Moscow and opened fire on the crowd, the head of Russia’s Federal Security Service told President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, according to Russian state news agency Tass.

Russia's Investigative Committee said four people among those detained were directly involved in the attack. They were stopped in the Bryansk region of western Russia, “not far from the border with Ukraine,” it said.

At least 93 people were killed in Friday's attack, including three children, authorities said.

Images shared by Russian state media Saturday showed a fleet of emergency vehicles still gathered outside the ruins of Crocus City Hall, a shopping mall and music venue with a capacity of more than 6,000 people in Krasnogorsk, on Moscow’s western edge.

The attack came just days after Putin cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide. The attack was the deadliest in Russia in years and came as the country’s fight in Ukraine dragged into a third year.

Videos posted online showed gunmen in the venue shooting civilians at point-blank range. The roof of the theater, where crowds had gathered Friday for a performance by the Russian rock band Picnic, collapsed in the early hours of Saturday morning as firefighters spent hours fighting a fire which erupted during the attack.

Four of those detained were directly involved in the attack, Tass said.

The ISIS group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated social media channels, although neither the Kremlin nor Russian security services have officially assigned blame for the attack.

In a statement posted by its Aamaq news agency, ISIS’s affiliate in Afghanistan said it had attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim.

However, a US intelligence official told The Associated Press that US intelligence agencies had confirmed that ISIS was responsible for the attack.

The official said US intelligence agencies had gathered information in recent weeks that the ISIS branch was planning an attack in Moscow, and that US officials had privately shared the intelligence earlier this month with Russian officials.

Moscow attack terrorists planned to flee to Ukraine – FSB

Russia’s domestic security service has reported that four assailants were detained in Bryansk Region near the border

The terrorists who attacked Crocus City Hall in Moscow Region on Friday evening planned to flee to Ukraine, the FSB security service said in a statement on Saturday.

Four assailants were apprehended in Bryansk Region near the border, and are being transported to Moscow. According to the FSB, the perpetrators of the terrorist attack – which has left at least 93 people dead – had contacts on Ukrainian soil.

Seven other people have been detained following the mass shooting, the security service said. The attack was meticulously planned, with a cache of weapons amassed beforehand, the statement added.

The investigation is ongoing, with the security service working to determine all circumstances surrounding the case.

Moscow concert hall attack: Death toll rises to 115 with scores injured

The attack on the Crocus City Hall on Friday killed at least 115 people and injured more than 187. Russian authorities expected the number of casualties to rise.

Camouflage-clad gunmen with automatic weapons burst into a packed concert hall near Moscow, where the veteran rock band Picnic was to perform, shooting into the crowd and detonating explosives, setting the building on fire.

The blaze ripped through the venue, with smoke filling the building and screaming visitors rushing to emergency exits.

The concert hall, one of the most popular in Moscow, can hold some 6,200 people.

RT’s editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan has posted a video clip of the interrogation of one of the suspected terrorists behind Friday’s shooting spree at Crocus City concert hall near Moscow. Earlier on Saturday, Russia’s FSB security service confirmed that eleven suspects, including four of the alleged perpetrators, had been detained in Bryansk Region, not far from the Ukrainian border.

The footage shows a bearded man lying on the ground and describing in broken Russian how he’d been paid to commit the terrorist attack.

https://www.standard.co.uk/comment/ukraine-war-russia-vladimir-putin-volodymyr-zelensky-b1148294.html

Putin may be weeks away from a breakthrough in Ukraine but the West is asleep

There is a growing understanding across the Western allies that Ukraine is losing the ground war against Russia, and by summer could face defeat.

Russia is pounding front lines with artillery, rocket and drone fire — and at over five times the rate the Ukrainian army can reply. Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops are exhausted — after sustaining in some sectors a heavier concentration of incoming artillery than at the Somme in 1916, or the Normandy Bocage after D-Day in 1944.

The Western response has been patchy to the prospect of a Russian breakthrough within weeks. Artillery stocks, even for their own arsenals in the cases of Britain, Germany and the US, will not be replenished fully for another two years. Germany has increased defence spending but refuses to send game-changing weapons like the Taurus missile.

Zelenskyy Talks of Gradual Retreat if Ukraine Does Not Get Promised US Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview published Friday that if his country does not get promised U.S. military aid blocked by a divided Congress, its forces will have to retreat "in small steps." "If there is no U.S. support, it means that we have no air defense, no Patriot missiles, no jammers for electronic warfare, no 155 millimeter artillery rounds," Zelenskyy told The Washington Post. "It means we will go back, retreat, step by step, in small steps," he added. "We are trying to find some way not to retreat."
