...since the great old one has been gathering dust in a seldom-visited museum for the last two years.

Starting the relaunch with some very recent wise words from RI's honoured absentee founder:

@JeffWellsRigInt 9 hrs ago.

One terribly grave trend among many is how, everywhere, purportedly democratic regimes govern as though courting extreme unpopularity was no longer a serious hindrance.

The great old one was called "Quote-Only Thread", but maybe we can make an informal commitment to allow comments on this one as long as they're no longer than the original quote.

Samuel Beckett wrote:And having heard, or more probably read somewhere, in the days when I thought I would be well advised to educate myself, or amuse myself, or stupefy myself, or kill time, that when a man in a forest thinks he is going forward in a straight line, in reality he is going in a circle, I did my best to go in a circle, hoping in this way to go in a straight line. For I stopped being half-witted and became sly, whenever I took the trouble. And my head was a storehouse of useful knowledge. And if I did not go in a rigorously straight line, with my system of going in a circle, at least I did not go in a circle, and that was something. And by going on doing this, day after day, and night after night, I looked forward to getting out of the forest, some day.

.

The Quote-Only Thread is alive and is the fifth item down on the subforum L'Encyclopedie, which is reserved for general threads like film recommendations, greatest RI quotes, images only, etc.

The OP and first page date from 2006 and display the phpbb formatting problems of all R.I. posts from before 2007 or so.

More than 1,125 posts later, here is the current page, with the latest post by Harvey dating from January 31 of this year.

In 2006 a high school English teacher asked students to write to a famous author & ask for advice.

Kurt Vonnegut was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today - my own government.

But it is said, when a man comes to high office, that makes him worthy of honour and respect. Surely such offices don’t have the power of planting virtue in the minds of those who hold them, do they? Or of removing vices? No: the opposite is true. More often than removing wickedness, high office brings it to light, and this is the reason why we are angry at seeing how often high office has devolved upon the most wicked of men… Surely you can see how much disgrace high office heaps upon the evil… We can scarcely consider men worthy of respect on account of the offices they hold...
