Giant Penis on Roof Goes Unnoticed

Well. I don't want to drag the thread into the gutter in which I wallow. And I swear that every word of that sentence is true in its absolute and utter insincerity.

The thing is (as it were) that in contemporary het porn and erotic visual art, high and low, the female gaze is presumed to have a kind of uninterested ceci n'est pas une pipe failure to respond to the representation of the penis rather than the penis la meme chose. And I have often seen this stated as fact, not presumption, by both male and female people who opine on such things. I don't know how true it is though. Because as a result of whatever amount of truth is in the "men: horny and visually responsive; women: romantic and emotionally responsive" dichotomy, no one ever tries that hard. And when they do, they almost always do it wrong -- looking at you, Playgirl -- because they do it defensively, not proactively.

I was going to go on to discuss the unseen penis of unknown dimension in the context of Sex, by Madonna. But I am way off-topic already.

I really only sought to say that there is no framework in place for people of all genders to discuss the female attitude toward the male member that is not already all strewn with unexamined thought. So it's not a conversation that ever goes anywhere.

The book you referenced is The Sexuality of Christ in Renaissance Art and in Modern Oblivion by Leo Steinberg, and is a great personal favorite, hugely pertinent to not only this discussion, but also raising points in many of the hard topics touched upon on this board. Like the unfortunate Mr. Walker in the OP, the penis of Christ has gone virtually unnoticed in the modern world.

And a shout out to Marmot. Once again, gratefully, this board surpasses all expectations.

That's the one. I used to have it, but haven't thought of it, or run into it around the home, in a long time. It's probably in the magical closet of where-are-my-sunglasses-and-keys-and-other-sock-and-Modern-Lovers-debut-record, and will no doubt show itself again one day.

Though....I dimly recall hearing that he was doing a revised edition sometime in the last decade or so. Did he, perhaps?

hello c2w?!

'I really only sought to say that there is no framework in place for people of all genders to discuss the female attitude toward the male member that is not already all strewn with unexamined thought. So it's not a conversation that ever goes anywhere.'

from sunny:

'It may just be a prudish "Southern Lady" thang, but I have heard it from women down here all my life.'

combining youse two girls backs up my thesis that its social pressure that tells us all the time' you're a slut if you're interested in sex as sex (and not as signifier for romance, security, intimacy, blah blah blah). if you're horny just cause you're horny. in my experience the younger generations are even more indoctrinated in this type of thinking (i'm 45).

so this thread is very refreshing!

hi ninakat re: the dick chainey, very clever. mine is always happy. !

...and then there are these, to consider as well.

The carrot bag logo reminded me of these:

Gotta add this, too, though: I love the guy's attitude about his friends' prank. We need more of that outlook nowadays.

Did anyone think of that CSI episode about the 'plushies' sub-culture when they saw Bush with the big rabbit?

Not to mention more people willing to do things like paint giant penises on roofs.
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.
