Grand Theft misogyny

As even your grandma knows, "Grand Theft Auto IV" is out and it's being hyped as an X-rated wonderland. You can enjoy booty-bouncing, crotch headstands and double lap dances at the local strip club, and pay a hooker to talk dirty and service you in your hooptie. It gets better: After you get your rocks off, you can run her over with your car or riddle her with bullets -- it all depends on how you roll, ya big stud.

Predictably, an IGN viral video advertising these homicidal sexploits has set feminist blogs aflame. It shows a john running a hooker over with his car while shouting: "I'm a hired killer and I pay for sex. My mother would be ashamed." (Paging Dr. Freud!) Another prostitute is shown servicing a john; after the sex act, he (like a praying mantis with a machine gun) plows her down with a shower of bullets. He shouts at her bullet-riddled corpse to "stay down!"

Earlier this week, Feministing's Samhita argued that "many young men are going to have their first ... sexual experiences via GTA and then they are going to kill the women they are sleeping with." It's important to note that GTA players don't have to kill prostitutes, although they certainly can if it occurs to them. As our resident tech-expert at Machinist told me, killing prostitutes is not required by the game; in fact, it will help you lose, not win, the game. Not to mention, boys and girls have been having their first sexual experiences virtually for some time -- it isn't something GTA invented. Those experiences can be fun or traumatic, healthy or harmful. GTA may be far more publicly visible than hardcore pornography, but I'd wager that a far greater number of young boys will be exposed to extremely violent pornography -- involving real, live, breathing women -- than will pretend to kill a prostitute in GTA.

I have trouble with Samhita's argument that "GTA is merely reflective of the bigger misogyny embedded in capitalist patriarchy." It's an attractive way to package male fantasies of having sex with and then killing prostitutes, but I don't think it's all that simple; it's rarely as simple as blaming the patriarchy. (Although, there's plenty to the capitalism claim -- clearly the marketing is meant to drum up parental outrage to make the game more irresistible to kids.) This argument also triggered Susannah Breslin of Reverse Cowgirl:

"The fact of the matter is that you cannot police the sexual fantasies of men ... You can't distill one man's desires into some reductionist understanding of 21st century America that posits women as the victims of men once again. You can't continue to stick your head into the sand and refuse to believe that this isn't a part of how men really think and feel and fuck and want and love and hate and live."

She isn't saying that all men have these fantasies, but rather that some men -- perhaps, many men -- do. As Breslin wrote during an e-mail back-and-forth with me, whether you "agree" or "disagree" with virtual prostitute killing is irrelevant; the fact is that these intensely politically incorrect fantasies do exist and by ignoring that fact -- or blaming it on the patriarchy -- we work against understanding them. As she wrote in her post: "[I]f you think men pay women for sex because we live in a misogynist society, you should come down out of your ivory tower and live amongst the rest of us for a little while … What do you really think is going on behind closed doors, on street corners, in parked cars in America?" Breslin has a fairly good idea thanks to her recent projects "Letters From Johns" and "Letters From Working Girls," blogs that respectively compile firsthand accounts of either side of prostitution.

I'm not defending the game or the fact that this type of hooker-killing game play was virally marketed by IGN, but the revolting truth is that there is a real market for simulated (or real) sexual violence against women, and it wasn't created by "Grand Theft Auto." Now, of course, remains the question: How much does the game do to encourage that fantasy?

By Ann Rule[/url]

Image

From the Publisher: In the most extraordinary book Ann Rule has ever undertaken, America's master of true crime has spent more than two decades researching the story of the Green River Killer, who murdered more than forty-nine young women. The quest to discover the most prolific serial killer in American history has been an intimate part of Ann Rule's life, with some of the corpses found only a mile or so from where she lived and raised her own daughters. She did not know the killer, but he apparently knew her and attended many of her book signings. For 22 years, the killer carried out his self-described "career" as a killing machine, ridding the world of women he considered evil. His eerie ability to lure his victims to their deaths and hide their bodies made him far more dangerous than any infamous multiple murderer in the annals of crime.

A few men -- including a law student, a truck painter, and a taxi driver -- eventually emerged as the prime suspects among an unprecedented forty thousand scrutinized by the Green River Task Force. Still, there was no physical evidence linking any of them to the murders until 2001, when investigators used a new DNA process on a saliva sample they had preserved since 1987, with stunning results.

Ann Rule has followed the case since July 1982, when the first body -- that of teenager Wendy Lee Coffield -- was found in the Green River, snagged on pilings under a bridge. Rule has compiled voluminous files, working through an incredible 95,000 pages of official police records, transcripts, photographs, and maps, winnowing out the chaff and identifying what is truly important. Over the years, she gained unparalleled access to all the key players -- from King County Sheriff Dave Reichert to those close to the killer and his victims.

When finally apprehended and convicted, the killer made a detailed confession -- of his twisted sexual obsessions -- that will shock even the most jaded reader. Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry -- of who these young girls were, and who they might have become. A chilling look at the darkest side of human nature, this is the most important and most personal book of Ann Rule's long career.

By the end of 2005, Ann Rule, a former Seattle police officer, will have published twenty-six New York Times national bestsellers, all of them still in print She lives near Seattle, Washington.

Sorry, very touchy subject with me.

A CONFESSED SERIAL KILLER

It's always the same MO...serial killers, killing the defenseless and weak

How come you don't see such killers, taking up a challenge?

Image

Now THATD be a great level in a video game...sadly only such levels can only be found in "al Qaeda" produced games(No Im not really advocating violence in Washington DC, the nwo already has terror proxies to do just that)

If GTA makes kids desensitived to hurting innocent Americans...

then what about all these Pentagon backed war games? No wonder most of them are rated "T" and have no blood. They are aimed at getting youth to join up, and accept the "fun video game nature" of murdering innocent Muslims for corporate hegemon.

Hey, dont play GTA...thats bad! Play America's Army and Full Spectrum Warrior! Killing sand niggers was never so much fun!

Forgetting the deep state parapolitic nature of some of the most famous serial killings(Lucerferian military complex networks, mind control, etc) ,
given that theres tens of thousands of unidentified jane and john does of non accident deaths...theres probably a lot of serial killers/cults in America that have gone uncaught.

Look how many children get kidnapped every year...where do they end up? I guess thats like asking where does all the drugs come from.

Interesting subject, I just watched the Silence of the Lambs the other day...still creeps me out to this day.

well I'd say ferrari B-Moon, rather than plastic pony, and widen to massacre to encompass the odd punter or two. (this was intended to be ironic btw, merely that the para about not policing men's fantasies, made me wonder if the same leniency would be extended over other minorities* who might conceivably be selected to be encouraged to fantasise about murdering specific other groups. Why not a sister version I reasoned, or a homosexual version, or a racially biased one, or an ageist one ? super heated grannies preying on and wasting toyboys, and so on )

* presuming here that not ALL men are secretly fantasising the sex-and-death combo

Looking forward to getting gta4

I've been killing men, aliens, zombies, monsters, robots and - yes - sometimes women in video games for more than two decades now.

No feminist has ever complained. (I've a lot of time for feminism, actually).

I'm still a leftist, anti-war type vegan hippy dude and scourge of Right Wing Americans on various internet forums.

My desire to kill real life prostuitutes and steal real cras and shoot real policemen will always be zero.

Never been a huge fan of the GTA series (mainly because it's combat system sucks), but I did pick up the latest one because that aspect is supposed to be improved.

Honestly, the mainstream hype about paying (and beating) hookers is such a non-topic, and as usual the people that complain the most are those who haven't even played the game. Plus, they seem to trapped in this mindset that only adolescent boys play videogames, when the average age of a gamer is now 30 yrs old. It's the same phenomenon as "heavy metal turns teens into Satanists", or Christians who complained about "The Last Temptation Of Christ" without ever seeing it.

Just about everything about Liberty City (where the game takes place) seems designed to take the piss out of the jingoistic American Dream, from gun control to big pharma, the war in Iraq, beer commercials, the growing police state, media infatuation with celebrity, the health care industry... you name an issue, and they peg it (of course, they never miss an opportunity to be as crude as possible either).

Even the main story arc of chasing your own American Dream seems to be getting murky... as your character starts climbing in the ranks of the underworld, he starts questioning the validity of the very dream he's chasing.

I'm not saying it an overly complex narrative, but it's certainly more interesting that earlier iterations of the franchise, with a sizeable dose of social satire.

Killing Monsters: Why Children Need Fantasy, Superheroes, and Make-Believe Violence.

Worth reading, even if you vehemently disagree with it, so that you'll at least be disagreeing with something intelligent, thoughtful, and well-argued.

(That said, I wouldn't hook children up with any of the GTA series in particular, given my druthers. It's just worth being careful about interpreting any fictional depiction of violence as some kind of fascist indoctrination.)
