Jim Morrison confesses. This is kind of eerie.

The Spy lyrics
I'm a spy in the house of love
I know the dream, that you're dreamin' of
I know the word that you long to hear
I know your deepest, secret fear
I'm a spy in the house of love
I know the dream, that you're dreamin' of
I know the word that you long to hear
I know your deepest, secret fear
I know everything
Everything you do
Everywhere you go
Everyone you know

I'm a spy in the house of love
I know the dream, that you're dreamin' of
I know the word that you long to hear
I know your deepest, secret fear
I know your deepest, secret fear
I know your deepest, secret fear
I'm a spy, I can see
What you do
And I know

Annie's fave Zappa quotes

===============

David Crosby:

I wonder who they are
The men who really run this land
And I wonder why they run it
With such a thoughtless hand.
Tell me what are their names,
And on what street do they live?
I'd like to ride right over...

i'll go out on a limb and say that if the song 'Powderfinger' was the result of funding from a Military Intelligence plot, well, it was money well spent. keep 'em coming....

Powderfinger

Look out, Mama, there's a white boat comin' up the river
With a big red beacon, and a flag, and a man on the rail
I think you'd better call John,
'Cause it don't look like they're here to deliver the mail
And it's less than a mile away
I hope they didn't come to stay
It's got numbers on the side and a gun
And it's makin' big waves.

Daddy's gone, my brother's out hunting in the mountains
Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy-Lou
So the Powers That Be left me here to do the thinkin'
And I just turned twenty-two
I was wonderin' what to do
And the closer they got,
The more those feelings grew.

Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassurin'
He told me, Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin'
But when the first shot hit the docks I saw it comin'
Raised my rifle to my eye
Never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black,
And my face splashed in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder and the finger
Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger
Think of me as one you'd never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I'll miss her.

As long as we are connecting dots:

The formation of vigilance committees in northern California, particularly in San Francisco, produced a mass exodus of criminals into southern California.

Perhaps, more than any other vigilante movement, the San Francisco vigilance committee of 1856 produced the greatest exodus of criminals ever recorded in California history. Despite the fact that this committee hanged only four men, thirty criminals were officially banished (of which twenty-five actually left) and it is estimated that eight hundred other villains left the city in fear. A most notorious individual who fled San Francisco and sought safe-haven in the suburbs around Los Angeles was Ned (also known as Edward) McGowan. As a corrupt judge and an accomplice to multiple San Francisco murders (including the murder of James King of William), the vigilantes sought to bring McGowan to justice. However, like many other fugitives from San Francisco, he evaded capture and took refuge in Los Angeles County until the vigilance committee disbanded. The influx of long-time, professional villains like Ed McGowan created such a high concentration of criminals in Los Angeles that the city soon evolved from a “cow town” into a criminal enclave. And so, because of this great immigration of criminals, the violence and lawlessness that so devastatingly plagued San Francisco suddenly spread to the City of Angels in the 1850s.

Tons of fun to read, but it does leave me asking myself: Exactly what strategic aim would make such a complex operation worth the investment? None of these artists individually or together served any purpose that rock stars of non-spook descent couldn't have done just as well, as demonstrated by any number of them having in fact done it. That the management/executive side of the recording industry -- or for that matter the entire entertainment industry -- is connected and/or mobbed up and/or co-opted and/or corrupt is hardly a newsflash, and neither is the manipulation of the '60s-counterculture, California Style. I've always thought Jim Morrison was a counterfeit as an artist and as a personality, pretty much since I was five years old. But that's just me, and I'm every bit as satisfied with no explanation for it as I am with any explanation for it, since I can't imagine what explanation there could possibly be that would have altered anyone or anything in the world by one iota.

Seriously. What otherwise unattainable goal might have necessitated going to as much trouble as the suggested operation would have had to entail?

While hardly an otherwise unattainable goal imposing authority and diverting rebellion may be an amusing pastime. For some.

I'm going to wait till the end of the series, but a lot of this stuff doesn't completely gel for me, and as a military brat myself a lot of the dot connecting doesn't strike me as that unusual. The kids moved a lot, and often ended up in the same places at unusual times and combinations not to mention their fathers who were worked in a very top down, chain of command system that was isolated in structure and lifestyle from the general population. There is no way you are not going to get a combinations that will look as if they are beyond synchronicity. I imagine the same would hold for the Hollywood crowd. There are alternative, prosaic explanations for much of it.

Still, some of the history is more than odd, but it's not enough to get me to latch on to where I think he is going.

it is quite a read and it was McGowan's "There is Something About Henry" that probably took me off the rails. I do appreciate his work.

Sweejak:

Thank you for originally calling this series to our attention, and for notice of parts V and VI. I've been regularly checking on Dave's main page for updates, and would not have known of these two had you not put them up here. (they aren't visible to me at his index)

Will you please tell me how to get to wherever you found these last two?

I signed up for his newsletter alerts a long while back, so I get notices via email:
On his homepage here
http://www.davesweb.cnchost.com/index.html you can see the series as well as other stories.
I don't see a sign up for notices though. There is a contact the author link.

Here are a couple of other links related to the current articles:

Thanks again for all that, Sweejak. Your comments about maintaining a balance between the lure of the mystically significant and the alternative prosaic explanation are also quite useful to keep in mind.

Well, no one wants to told that an era he loved, in spite of the nasties, was invented in a think tank, so yeah, I would look for balance LOL. I still think the intel aspects were a parallel development in most cases.

My son has a really off base view of that era, hell, it was hijacked, certainly commercialized, before it was over.

I wonder what they will say about the internet era given DARPA's involvement in it's creation.

From the Mondo Hollywood film, here is Bobby Jameson's site with a video of that screaming anti war song.
