Time to 'RFTH!' yet?

About country living vs. city living, this links to the first episode of the first season of a PBS series.

http://www.pbs.org/e2/episodes/101_the_green_apple_trailer.html

In that first episode there's a brief comment by someone who moved out of a city, about how much weight he and his wife gained, because in the country they have to drive everywhere, whereas in their former, city-living days, they could walk. That's a certain kind of city, though (NYC)--that developed before car-culture. LA is discussed as the more recent version of a city, with a pretty different kind of 'fabric'.

The series is called e2: Design. It showcases green/sustainable building techniques and concepts, and features various architects and other leading figures in the green building movement (if there's such a thing). General message of the series is that we need to change, but we can do a lot of what we need to do, if we start now and put into practice the best ideas currently available.

It's not about challenging the overall existing structure of society--it shows how we can still have cities and tall buildings, but better versions through green building techniques.

It's purpose seems to be to reassure and cheerlead.

I think, as a practical matter, RFTH won't work--we have to make cities work. Whatever else this series is doing, it's a useful starting point for seeing how to do that.

Oh, did I mention that it's narrated by Brad Pitt? Now you're excited----right?

rewilding

Postby vigilant » Wed Jul 02, 2008 1:51 pm

In the future running for the hills may not be an option. Congress has voted to set aside 45 billion dollars for the government to buy up areas outside of cities. Ostensibly these purchases are for a project that has been called "The Rewilding of America".

Supposedly these areas are to be set aside for the reintroduction of animal species, building parks, etc...

Critics claim the true purpose is to get people "out of the hills" and concentrate populations in cities so that people will be easier to control and manage.

I too am always dubious when my government decides to "help us"....
The whole world is a stage...will somebody turn the lights on please?....I have to go bang my head against the wall for a while and assimilate....

You know vigilent, my mother and I were recently flying over western Massachusetts, and I commented to her that, for being such a populated country, there was an awful lot of area to which to run and hide. Being of like mind to those of us who read this forum, she replied that it would be awful hard to really control all of those places far from the megaplexes.

As if Congress was reading mum's mind......we dont have money to track economic data (M3) or maintain an alternative energy lab (I know, and a myriad other public goods), but $45,000,000,000 will be used for "parks", mm-hmm.......

It seems like the time may be at hand. But, like most things, I take them with a grain of salt.

Something Big Is Going On

The following statement is written by Congressman Paul about the pending financial disaster. He will introduce this statement as a special order and insert it into the Congressional Record next week. Fortunately, we have the opportunity to debut it first on the Campaign for Liberty blog. It reads as follows:

One more thing with all this tho. I found that one thing I was looking for was a good community to live in, and i found that. No one's gonna survive nuthin without a good community to be part of.

If I learned one thing at Burning Man, it's that the community is the thing.

One person could go it alone, if they knew woodcraft for that area, but things can get better faster with a good community. More people would know more things (presumably), and IF they all pitched in together you could have a nice little commune. From the people that I know who lived in communes in the 60's and 70's the key word is PARTICIPATION! If ALL are not involved things go south real fast. (No offense to Joe down under on the south comment)

I did live in the hills for 15 years growing up and that poster is not too far off.....watch your back and don't drop the soap in the shower.
