Strange Odors Reported Across DC

Strange Odors Reported Across the District

WASHINGTON - A bizarre day for D.C. Fire & EMS after several dozen phone calls have been received about unexplained odors all across the city.

Spokesman Alan Etter says between midnight and 1 p.m. Wednesday, they have received 36 calls. Firefighters have responded to 11 schools, as well as the fifth and sixth district police stations.

What the odor is and where it's coming from remains a mystery.

Washington Gas is confident that natural gas is not the source of the problem. Company spokesman Tim Sargeant says they're still working on it.

Etter says it's possible that storm drains could be to blame, since the lack of rain has kept them from being flushed.

www.wtopnews.com/?sid=579051&nid=25

www.voccoquan.com/images/...ay%202.JPG

What on Earth? It is sulphur! And not confined to D.C.:

Quote:
There are several threads on this board about people coming down with a strange illness with sores in their throats. Super Volcanoes??

Postby somebody » Fri Sep 30, 2005 1:50 pm

Please don't let it be super volcanoes letting off excess steam, that would not be good. I know there are major lava flows under Yellowstone. There's info out there about giant volcanoes, but I don't have a link handy. This doesn't feel so good. I hope it's nothing.

For once, my first guess is that it's the Etheric Continuum.

I doubt it's Yellowstone, or I'd be smelling something, as I am closer to it that any of those other cities, if I am not mistaken.

If they are trying to poison us, maybe they are using different chemicals in different cities? I don't put anything past the govt, as in a link on the site of theforbiddenknowledge.com, it went into detail on how various tests were done on the city I grew up in. And they were tests of the spraying or releasing of some type of smoke variety.

Re: Local Iowa schools

Postby chiggerbit » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:02 pm

Doesn't say sulphur, just gas smell:

Quote:
Van Buren High School Evacuated Due To Gas Leak

Three times in the last two days the Van Buren County High School has been evacuated due to a gas leak.

The first incident was on Tuesday when an odor was noticed and determined to be that of gas. Students were taken out to the baseball field where they remained until the gas leak was fixed.

Wednesday morning the same odor was noticed and utility crews were called back to the school and fixed the problem again. The leak was in the same place that the previous days leak was. Students were then evacuated again Wednesday afternoon for the same reason.

Officials are saying that the leak was coming from outside of the building but getting inside through some sort of vent. It was also noted that the smell never made it through the whole building, the evacuation was done as a precautionary measure for the students well being.

The problem, for now, seems to be fixed and classes resumed as scheduled Thursday.

Same school district, but this one at an elementary school:

Quote:
A southeast Iowa school with a history of propane gas problems was evacuated Tuesday morning. The new Douds Elementary School was evacuated for about two-and-a-half hours after an electric meter reader smelled an odor she believed to be gas.

She reported it to authorities, and the 200-plus students along with teachers and staff members were taken to a nearby church while it was investigated.

Superintendent Richard Barton told KTVO Tuesday that the gas company came and checked it out. He says there was no gas leak. He says what leaked was the odor that's put in with propane. It apparently leaked when the school's maintenance crew was doing a routine maintenance check on the school's propane furnace.

That process reportedly allows some of the odor to escape. Barton says a letter was sent home with parents to explain the incident.

In past months, the new Douds Elementary had had repeated problems with propane gas seeping from pipe joints after the new facility was built.

unusual?

Postby Dreams End » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:17 pm

Given the vast numbers of icky things constantly being released in various ways, is it possible that in any given week several local news outlets will have such stories?

Alternately, we do know that the government has released both "harmless" gases and also disease causing organisms (with "mild" effects) into populated areas. You know...just testing.

Upstate NY

Postby Avalon » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:22 pm

Last week I walked into the supermarket (one of half a dozen in this small city in upstate NY) to find the front littered with shopping carts, and staff scurrying to reshelf everything in them. The checkout clerk said there had been an evacuation due to a "gas leak."

I'd been shopping all up and down the strip there within the hour, nothing had been apparent to me.

But where I live in a quite rural area, we've had some diesel-y smells recently that were strong enough to make my next door neighbors and me check our basements to see if there was some leak in our furnace systems. True, we're downwind of where they are resurfacing some roads, but we weren't getting any of this during the hot days when they were actively involved.

Postby Qutb » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:29 pm

These are unrelated cases. And DE is right, you can probably find the same number of cases of "strange smells" reported in local news any week.
Qutb means "axis," "pole," "the center," which contains the periphery or is present in it. smells

Postby albion » Fri Sep 30, 2005 2:39 pm

I noticed the stale, moldy smell in Southern California last week. It wasn't sulphur or petroleum. I chalked it up to an unseasonable thunderstorm that had just rolled through.
