4.4-magnitude earthquake rattles Southern California

An earthquake rippled across Southern California just before dawn, jolting people awake.

No reports of injuries, damage or power outages been linked to the 4.4-magnitude temblor.

There are reports of a buckled 10-foot stretch of concrete in a center lane of southbound Interstate 5 south of downtown Los Angeles in the Downey area. It is unclear if the broken concrete was caused by the quake.

The quake centered about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Not to say there hasn't been a year with bigger and more frequent quake, but of the type that have hit the human population, like this year? (not to say there haven't been more deadly quakes)

One of the biggest prominences in years erupted from the sun's northwestern limb today. The massive plasma-filled structure rose up and burst during a ~2 hour period around 0900 UT. Mark Townley sends this freeze-frame from his backyard observatory in Brierley Hill, West Midlands, UK... The eruption hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) into space...The cloud is not heading toward Earth, at least not directly. A glancing blow from the outskirts of the CME is possible two to three days from now, but any impact is likely to be mild. The eruption was more photogenic than geoeffective.

6.3-magnitude quake strikes Papua New Guinea

(CNN) -- A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

There were no immediate report of injuries, damages or deaths.

The quake struck at 9:15 a.m. Sunday (7:15 p.m. ET Saturday), according to USGS.

The quake's epicenter was 30 kilometers (20 miles) east of Lae, Papua New Guinea, and 300 km (185 miles) north of the capital, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

The quake had a depth of 66.2 kilometers (41.1 miles), USGS said.
