Anxious that Wikileaks may be on the verge of publishing a batch of secret State Department cables, investigators are desperately searching for founder Julian Assange. Philip Shenon reports.

(This story has been updated to reflect new developments on Assange's whereabouts, including the cancelation of a scheduled appearance in Las Vegas.)

Pentagon investigators are trying to determine the whereabouts of the Australian-born founder of the secretive website Wikileaks for fear that he may be about to publish a huge cache of classified State Department cables that, if made public, could do serious damage to national security, government officials tell The Daily Beast.

The officials acknowledge that even if they found the website founder, Julian Assange, it is not clear what they could do to block publication of the cables on Wikileaks, which is nominally based on a server in Sweden and bills itself as a champion of whistleblowers.

“We’d like to know where he is; we’d like his cooperation in this,” one U.S. official said of Assange.

American officials said Pentagon investigators are convinced that Assange is in possession of at least some classified State Department cables leaked by a 22-year-old Army intelligence specialist, Bradley Manning of Potomac, Maryland, who is now in custody in Kuwait.

And given the contents of the cables, the feds have good reason to be concerned.

As The Daily Beast reported June 8, Manning, while posted in Iraq, apparently had special access to cables prepared by diplomats and State Department officials throughout the Middle East, regarding the workings of Arab governments and their leaders, according to an American diplomat.

The cables, which date back over several years, went out over interagency computer networks available to the Army and contained information related to American diplomatic and intelligence efforts in the war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq, the diplomat said.

American officials would not discuss the methods being used to find Assange, nor would they say if they had information to suggest where he is now. "We'd like to know where he is; we'd like his cooperation in this," one U.S. official said of Assange.

Assange, who first gained notoriety as a computer hacker, is as secretive as his website and has no permanent home.

He was scheduled to speak Friday in Las Vegas at an International Reporters and Editors conference. But the group’s executive director, Mark Horvik, tells The Daily Beast that Assange canceled the appearance—he was on a panel to discuss anonymous sources—within the last several days as a result of unspecificed “security concerns.” Horvik said he communicated with Assange through email and did not know where he might be.

Last week, Assange was scheduled to join famed Pentagon Papers leaker Daniel Ellsberg for a talk at New York's Personal Democracy Forum. Assange appeared via Skype from Australia instead, saying lawyers recommended he not return to the United States.

Assange was in the United States as recently as several weeks ago, when he gave press interviews to promote the website’s release of an explosive 2007 video of an American helicopter attack in Baghdad that left 12 people dead, including two employees of the news agency Reuters.

Wikileaks has not replied directly to email messages from The Daily Beast.

However, in cryptic messages he sent this week via Twitter, Wikileaks referred to an earlier Daily Beast article on the investigation of Manning and said that it “looks like we’re about to be attacked by everything the U.S. has.”

In an earlier post, the site said that allegations that “we have been sent 260,000 classified U.S. embassy cables are, as far as we can tell, incorrect.”

This morning, a new Wikileaks tweet went out: "Any signs of unacceptable behavior by the Pentagon or its agents towards this press will be viewed dimly."

Pentagon investigators say that particular post may have been an effort by Wikileaks to throw them—and news organizations—off the track as the site prepared the library of State Department cables for release, officials said.

“It looks like they’re playing some sort of semantic games,” one American official said of Wikileaks. “They may not have 260,000 cables, but they’ve probably got enough cables to make trouble.”

In another cryptic Twitter message, the site said that while the State Department might be alarmed about the prospect of the release of classified cables, “we have not been contacted.”

American officials were unwilling to say what would happen if Assange is tracked down, although they suggested they would have many more legal options available to them if he were still somewhere in the United States.

Manning has reportedly admitted that he downloaded 260,000 diplomatic cables and provided them to Wikileaks. In Internet chat logs first revealed by Wired magazine, Manning also took credit for leaking the 2007 video to the website.

“Hillary Clinton and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available,” Manning wrote of the diplomatic cables, according to Wired.

Wikileaks has not confirmed that Manning is a source of any information posted on the site. “We do not know if Mr. Manning is our source, but the U.S. military is claiming he is, so we will defend him,” Wikileaks said in another Twitter message.

Manning was turned in to the Pentagon by a former computer hacker based in California, Adrian Lamo, after Manning approached Lamo for counsel. Manning is believed to have contacted Lamo after reading a recent profile of him in Wired.

In the chat log revealed by Wired, Manning bragged to Lamo about having downloaded a huge library of State Department cables, as well as the 2007 video of the helicopter attack, and having provided the material to Wikileaks.

Manning took credit for having leaked a classified diplomatic cable that has already appeared on the site—a memo prepared by the United States embassy in Reykjavik, Iceland, that described a meeting there between American and Icelandic officials over that country’s banking meltdown.

The January 2010 memo may have been of special interest to Wikileaks given the site’s close ties to Iceland, where Assange has based himself at times and where he worked with local lawmakers to draft free-speech laws that give broad freedom to journalists to protect their sources.

A profile this week in The New Yorker magazine depicted Assange feverishly at work with Icelandic colleagues in Reykjavik in March as he organized the release of the 2007 video of the helicopter attack. The edited video was given the title Collateral Murder, and its release infuriated officials at the Defense Department.

With its network of whistleblowers, Wikileaks has published documents and videos on its site that have outraged other foreign governments. To protect the site from attack by intelligence agencies, Assange has placed Wikileaks on several Internet servers, making it all but impossible for any government to shut down the site entirely.

Santiniketan Park Association

The Santiniketan Park Association, also known as The Family and The Great White Brotherhood, is a controversial New Age group formed in Australia under the leadership of the Yoga teacher Anne Hamilton-Byrne.

Beginnings

Around 1964 Dr Raynor Johnson was hosting regular meetings of a religious and philosophical discussion group led by Hamilton-Byrne at Santiniketan, his home at Ferny Creek in the Dandenong Ranges on the eastern outskirts of Melbourne. Also connected was a series of weekly talks he gave at the Council of Adult Education in Melbourne, entitled "The Macrocosm and the Microcosm". The group purchased an adjoining property which they named Santiniketan Park [1] in 1968 and constructed a meeting hall, Santiniketan Lodge.

The association consisted of middle class, professional people; it has been estimated that a quarter were nurses and other medical personnel, and that many were recruited by Johnson who referred them to Hamilton-Byrne's hatha yoga classes.[2] Members mainly lived in nearby suburbs and townships in the Dandenongs, meeting each Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evening [3] at Santiniketan Lodge, Crowther House in Olinda or another property in the area known as the White Lodge [4].

Newhaven

During the late 1960s and 1970s Newhaven Hospital in Kew was a private psychiatric hospital owned and managed by Marion Villimek, a Santiniketan member; many of its staff and attending psychiatrists were also members.[4][5][6]

Many patients at Newhaven were treated with the hallucinogenic drug LSD [7]. The hospital was used to recruit potential new members from among the patients, and also to administer LSD to members under the direction of the Santiniketan psychiatrists Dr John Mackay and Dr Howard Whitaker [8]. One of the original members of the Association was given LSD, electroconvulsive therapy and two leucotomies during the late 1960s [9].

Although the psychiatric hospital had been closed down by 1992, in that year a new inquest was ordered into the death of a Newhaven patient in 1975 after new claims that his death had been due to deep sleep therapy. The inquest heard evidence concerning the use of electroconvulsive therapy, LSD and other practices at Newhaven but found no evidence that deep sleep had been used on this patient. [10]. The Newhaven building was later reopened as a nursing home with no connections to its previous owner or uses.

Kia Lama

Anne Hamilton-Byrne acquired fourteen infants and young children between about 1968 and 1975. Some were the natural children of Santiniketan members, others had been obtained through irregular adoptions arranged by lawyers, doctors and social workers within the group who could bypass the normal processes. The children’s identities were changed using false birth certificates or deed poll, all being given the surname 'Hamilton-Byrne' and dressed alike even to the extent of their hair being dyed uniformly blonde[11].

The children were kept in seclusion and home-schooled at Kia Lama, a rural property usually referred to as "Uptop", at Taylor Bay on Lake Eildon near the town of Eildon, Victoria. They were taught that Anne Hamilton-Byrne was their biological mother, and knew the other adults in the group as 'aunties' and 'uncles' [4]. They were denied almost all access to the outside world, and subjected to a discipline that included frequent corporal punishment and starvation diets [12].

The children were frequently dosed with the psychiatric drugs Anatensol, Diazepam, Haloperidol, Largactil, Mogadon, Serepax, Stelazine, Tegretol or Tofranil[4]. On reaching adolescence they were compelled to undergo an initiation involving LSD[13]: while under the influence of the drug the child would be left in a dark room, alone apart from visits by Hamilton-Byrne or one of the psychiatrists from the group[4].

Memoir

A few children managed to escape. One adoptive daughter, Sarah Hamilton-Byrne, later wrote a book of her experiences giving an account of stealing white children by the medical establishment and others. In it she claimed that her biological mother had come to get rid of a baby and that members of the medical establishment in Melbourne and Geelong took part in a process where women were told that their babies had died at birth, when they had actually been taken away and eventually passed on to Anne Hamilton-Byrne.[14]

Religious Claims

The Santiniketan Park Association taught an eclectic mixture of Christianity and Hinduism with other eastern and western religions on the principle that spiritual truths are universal[15]. The children studied the major scriptures of these religions and also the works of fashionable gurus including Sri Chinmoy, Meher Baba and Rajneesh[4]. The group had an inner circle who justified their actions by their claim to be reincarnations of the Apostles of Jesus[16].

Siddha Yoga

For a few years Anne Hamilton-Byrne developed a special connection to the Siddha Yoga movement, receiving shaktipat initiation from Swami Muktananda and taking the Sanskrit name Ma Yoga Shakti. She took some of the children to stay with Muktananda at his ashram at South Fallsburg in the Catskill Mountains in 1979 and 1981[4], and purchased a nearby property as her own base in the USA. However, she later became disillusioned with Muktananda and helped other disaffected members of his movement to disconnect[17].

The Law Intervenes

On 14 August 1987 a police raid on Kia Lama released the children still being held there [18].

Anne Hamilton-Byrne and her husband, William, remained outside Australia for the next six years. Operation Forest, an investigation involving police in Australia, the USA and the United Kingdom resulted in their arrest in June 1993 by the FBI at the nearby town of Hurleyville in the Catskills [19]. They were extradited to Australia [20] and charged with conspiracy to defraud and commit perjury by falsely registering the births of three unrelated children as their own triplets. Elizabeth Whitaker, wife of the psychiatrist Howard Whitaker, was their co-defendant [21]. The Hamilton-Byrnes pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of making a false declaration[22] and were fined $5000 each; the charge against Whitaker was dropped [23].

At 14:00 he talks about the strength of the international distribution of Wikileaks, and being attacked by lawyers. They have developed a multinational model that mimics the multinational system of asset diversion to pay fewer taxes by large companies. Wikileaks uses it to protect sources and have the information available in such a way that it can't be stopped.

Thanks to Google alerts, I've been able to keep my eye on the current Wikileaks debacle. I've become suspicious of these articles due to the repetitious nature of their content, almost as if some were cut and paste jobs assembled from a media talking point. One in particular a resent article by Kevin Poulsen and Kim Zetter, published on Monday, June 7, 2010 by Wired.com, titled US Intelligence Analyst Arrested in Wikileaks Video Probe.

The article depicts the arrest of SPC Bradley Manning, 22, of Potomac, Maryland in connection to the leak of a deadly 2007 U.S. Army helicopter air strike in Baghdad that claimed the lives of several innocent civilians two of which were children to wikileaks, a multi-jurisdictional public service web site, designed to protect whistle blowers, journalists and activists who have sensitive materials to communicate to the public. It further alleges Manning provided 260,000 State Department wires in the form of a csv (comma separated value file – a text document where the data is separated by commas, and is easily imported into an excel document or database)

Before I present the details, let me first mention on March 15, 2010 Wikileaks published a press release titled U.S. Intelligence planned to destroy WikiLeaks. It details a classified (SECRET/NOFORN) 32 page U.S. counterintelligence investigation of wikileaks titled "Wikileaks.org - An Online Reference to Foreign Intelligence Services, Insurgents, Or Terrorist Groups?"

In this document the creator reports possible ways to discredit and/or undermine the claims that those who post documents to the site do so with complete anonymity. It goes further to detail a brief court win resulting in a two week shut down of the site, that was later overturned.

Like I mentioned, flags were raised alter looking at the abundant internet posts. I strongly believe the recent Manning arrest is in fact the operation discussed in the mentioned Government report.

The following are the key sticking points that make me believe we are seeing a staged false flag operation in action. They are doing exactly what they outlined in the report, and are trying to make a public example out of Manning, to discourage others from following suit.

1. The Wired article alleges Manning, admitted to leaking classified documents to Wikileaks to a convicted computer hacker named Adrian Lamo, who in turn contacted the FBI. Lamo acknowledged and confirmed the communications and was willing to hand over the logs that detailed in specific the leak of two videos and 260,000 State Department wires.

Wikileaks cannot confirm that Manning or that anyone for that matter is responsible for the leaks, Its designed to guarantee the whistle blower remains anonymous. Wikileaks admits to having in their possession a second video, which is in production, and set to be released as soon as its ready. They deny having or knowing about the claimed 260,000 wires. Why would they admit to one but deny the other? The video they confirm is encrypted, but no mention of any encryption on the wires. That means the documents could be posted with a few keystrokes, if they had them I believe they would already be posted.

2. Lamo, the hacker agreed to meet the FBI at a Starbucks Coffee shop, to hand over the evidence.

a. Have you ever herd of the FBI allowing any details to be released pertaining to current investigation? What ever happened to, “Im sorry, we cannot comment due to the ongoing investigation.”? Instead the FBI admits to seizing two hard drives belonging to Manning so then can be analyzed to determine if the leak took place, and to what extent the damages. Further putting the investigation in jeopardy

They also state that Manning is in custody but has yet to be charged with a crime.

b. The wired article also publishes the transcripts of the communications between Manning and Lamo, that are obviously edited so why post them at all? If you really had the need, just post the relevant portions? Again they risk the investigation.

The article then states
“Wired.com could not confirm whether Wikileaks received the supposed 260,000 classified embassy dispatches. To date, a single classified diplomatic cable has appeared on the site: Released last February, it describes a U.S. embassy meeting with the government of Iceland. E-mail and a voice mail message left for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Sunday were not answered by the time this article was published.

The State Department said it was not aware of the arrest or the allegedly leaked cables.
The FBI was not prepared to comment when asked about Manning.

Army spokesman Gary Tallman was unaware of the investigation”

That's the type of statement one would expect while the investigation is being conducted.

With this info in hand, I proceeded to run her name through several free online people finder type sites, and attempted to confirm that Brad lived with her. I found her and relatives but no mention of Brad. I even attempted to locate his father who is also quoted in the article but was also unable to verify that Brad was ever registered to live in Oklahoma with his father.

Who am I to believe what people tell me, so within 5 minutes I located him on the same free site I located Mannings Aunt.

Adding everything up, one can clearly cast doubt on the legitimacy of this story. It looks more like an attempt to flush out Wikileak members, while trying to get the public to form a general dislike for whistle blowers. As for Manning, he may or may not be in on the plot, we cant tell since he is being held over seas. How convenient.

Thanks to Google alerts, I've been able to keep my eye on the current Wikileaks debacle. I've become suspicious of these articles due to the repetitious nature of their content, almost as if some were cut and paste jobs assembled from a media talking point. One in particular a resent article by Kevin Poulsen and Kim Zetter, published on Monday, June 7, 2010 by Wired.com, titled US Intelligence Analyst Arrested in Wikileaks Video Probe.

The article depicts the arrest of SPC Bradley Manning, 22, of Potomac, Maryland in connection to the leak of a deadly 2007 U.S. Army helicopter air strike in Baghdad that claimed the lives of several innocent civilians two of which were children to wikileaks, a multi-jurisdictional public service web site, designed to protect whistle blowers, journalists and activists who have sensitive materials to communicate to the public. It further alleges Manning provided 260,000 State Department wires in the form of a csv (comma separated value file – a text document where the data is separated by commas, and is easily imported into an excel document or database)

Before I present the details, let me first mention on March 15, 2010 Wikileaks published a press release titled U.S. Intelligence planned to destroy WikiLeaks. It details a classified (SECRET/NOFORN) 32 page U.S. counterintelligence investigation of wikileaks titled "Wikileaks.org - An Online Reference to Foreign Intelligence Services, Insurgents, Or Terrorist Groups?"

In this document the creator reports possible ways to discredit and/or undermine the claims that those who post documents to the site do so with complete anonymity. It goes further to detail a brief court win resulting in a two week shut down of the site, that was later overturned.

Like I mentioned, flags were raised alter looking at the abundant internet posts. I strongly believe the recent Manning arrest is in fact the operation discussed in the mentioned Government report.

The following are the key sticking points that make me believe we are seeing a staged false flag operation in action. They are doing exactly what they outlined in the report, and are trying to make a public example out of Manning, to discourage others from following suit.

1. The Wired article alleges Manning, admitted to leaking classified documents to Wikileaks to a convicted computer hacker named Adrian Lamo, who in turn contacted the FBI. Lamo acknowledged and confirmed the communications and was willing to hand over the logs that detailed in specific the leak of two videos and 260,000 State Department wires.

Wikileaks cannot confirm that Manning or that anyone for that matter is responsible for the leaks, Its designed to guarantee the whistle blower remains anonymous. Wikileaks admits to having in their possession a second video, which is in production, and set to be released as soon as its ready. They deny having or knowing about the claimed 260,000 wires. Why would they admit to one but deny the other? The video they confirm is encrypted, but no mention of any encryption on the wires. That means the documents could be posted with a few keystrokes, if they had them I believe they would already be posted.


2. Lamo, the hacker agreed to meet the FBI at a Starbucks Coffee shop, to hand over the evidence.

a. Have you ever herd of the FBI allowing any details to be released pertaining to current investigation? What ever happened to, “Im sorry, we cannot comment due to the ongoing investigation.”? Instead the FBI admits to seizing two hard drives belonging to Manning so then can be analyzed to determine if the leak took place, and to what extent the damages. Further putting the investigation in jeopardy

They also state that Manning is in custody but has yet to be charged with a crime.

b. The wired article also publishes the transcripts of the communications between Manning and Lamo, that are obviously edited so why post them at all? If you really had the need, just post the relevant portions? Again they risk the investigation.

The article then states
“Wired.com could not confirm whether Wikileaks received the supposed 260,000 classified embassy dispatches. To date, a single classified diplomatic cable has appeared on the site: Released last February, it describes a U.S. embassy meeting with the government of Iceland. E-mail and a voice mail message left for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Sunday were not answered by the time this article was published.

The State Department said it was not aware of the arrest or the allegedly leaked cables.
The FBI was not prepared to comment when asked about Manning.

Army spokesman Gary Tallman was unaware of the investigation”

Compare this, to the current BP investigation, "Holder announced the criminal probe, though he would not specify the companies or individuals that might be targeted. "

That's the type of statement one would expect while the investigation is being conducted.

3 The article then reports
“Manning’s aunt, with whom he lived in the United States, had heard nothing about his arrest when first contacted by Wired.com last week; Debra Van Alstyne said she last saw Manning during his leave in January and they had discussed his plans to enroll in college when his four- year stint in the Army was set to end in October 2011.”

With this info in hand, I proceeded to run her name through several free online people finder type sites, and attempted to confirm that Brad lived with her. I found her and relatives but no mention of Brad. I even attempted to locate his father who is also quoted in the article but was also unable to verify that Brad was ever registered to live in Oklahoma with his father.

There has been numerous posting by individuals seeking information as to Mr. Horvath current residence. The general response is "If Counter Intelligence Center is doing their job it will be impossible to find out."

Who am I to believe what people tell me, so within 5 minutes I located him on the same free site I located Mannings Aunt.

3) Incidentally, which 'Capital Hill shooting' is this talking about? There's one from few years back--maybe 5 or 3 or so yrs?--which was eventually explained away as not actually having been a shooting; supposedly, someone heard construction equipment and thought it was gunfire. But there had been a massive, dramatic EMS response. It's always bothered me that there was no explanation beyond the minimal 'just construction equipment' (i.e. these are not the droids you're looking for)--and also not a "here's what really happened" version, or a more detailed cover-story version.

It seems clear to me that this latest "news" event is all about turning wikileaks and Julian into treasonous bastards in the public mind, as well as discouraging any whistleblowers from coming forth because, gosh, you might get busted!

And the Pentagon is on a manhunt ....

WikiLeaks to Release Video of Deadly US Afghan Attack

Whistleblowing website says it is still working to prepare the film of the bombing of the Afghan village of Garani in May 2009

The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks says it plans to release a secret military video of one of the deadliest US air strikes in Afghanistan in which scores of children are believed to have been killed.

WikiLeaks announced the move in an email to supporters. It said it fears it is under attack after the US authorities said they were searching for the site's founder, Julian Assange, following the arrest of a US soldier accused of leaking the Afghanistan video and another of a US attack in Baghdad in which civilians were killed.

WikiLeaks released the Baghdad video in April, prompting considerable criticism of the US military. It says it is still working to prepare the film of the bombing of the Afghan village of Garani in May 2009.

The Afghan government said about 140 civilians were killed in Garani, including 92 children. The US military initially said that up to 95 people died, of which about 65 were insurgents. However, American officials have since wavered on that claim and a subsequent investigation admitted mistakes were made during the attack.

The video could prove to be extremely embarrassing to the US military and risks weakening Afghan support. The US said it was targeting Taliban positions when it used weapons that create casualties over a wide area, including one-tonne bombs and others that burst in the air. But two US military officials told a newspaper last year that no one checked to see whether there were women and children in the buildings.

The US commander, General David Petraeus, said a year ago that the military's video of the attack would be made public as evidence that the US assault on Garani was justified. But it was not released.

In an email to supporters, Assange said WikiLeaks has the Garani video and "a lot of other material that exposes human rights abuses by the US government".

Last week, it was revealed that US authorities are trying to make contact with Assange to press him not to publish information the Pentagon says could endanger national security. Assange cancelled an appearance in Las Vegas last Friday.

In his email, Assange also calls on supporters to protect the website from "attack" by the authorities following the detention of a US soldier, Bradley Manning, who was arrested in Iraq after admitting to a former hacker that he leaked the Garani and Baghdad videos to WikiLeaks.
