Eclipse on Easter Island

Postby slomo » Sun Jul 11, 2010 2:05 pm

So the solar eclipse occurring in the midst of an especially bad astrological configuration (the cardinal cross) is going to be visible only from Easter Island...

Before today I was unaware of the exact location of the visible eclipse. If you are willing at all to entertain the plausibility of signs and portents in the sky, this cannot be a good omen. About as bad, or worse as the Columbia exploding over Texas a couple of months before the invasion of Iraq.

Discuss.

If we do live in an "associative universe," then there would be some logic to omens.

Thanks in part to minds like yours, Slomo, who are able to balance science and mysticism, I'm finally listening.

Hahaha. As per the Beatles discussions we've been having. Check out the newspaper Sagan picks up in that clip.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I don't dare mention any of this in professional circles. All of the philosophical problems seemingly posed by materialism and the occasional inexplicable Fortean event (not to mention the apparent success of "magick" and other physical changes brought about by acts of will) are resolvable by assuming that physics is built on a substrate of consciousness, and not the other way around. Every human culture except for our own has this as a fundamental axiom of its ontological system.

In other words, PKD is pretty much on target.

Thousands of tourists and scientists have descended on Chile's Easter Island to catch sight of Sunday's total solar eclipse.

The eclipse will only be visible from a small section of land, ending over southern parts of Chile and Argentina.

The eclipse started at 1815 GMT about 700km (440 miles) south-east of Tonga, and reaches Easter Island by 2011 GMT.

The population of Easter Island is believed to have doubled to about 8,000 for the event.

Some forecasters warned that cloudy skies could dash hopes of a clear view in the area of land deemed best placed to see the eclipse.

But as the moment of the four minute and 41 second eclipse on Easter Island neared, stormy weather gave way to bright sunshine.
Increased security

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking its rays and casting a shadow.

The eclipse is following an 11,000km path but mostly over the Pacific - the longest time of eclipse, five minutes and 20 seconds, will be over sea.

Easter Island's governor has insisted it can cope with the influx, but there is increased security at sacred sites, including for the famous 3,000-year-old Moai stone statues.

The island was partly evacuated after Chile's earthquake in February and the authorities want to show that it is back on the tourist map.

Local mayor Luz del Carmen Zasso told Agence France-Presse news agency: "Easter Island is an open-air museum, and the eclipse is part of this museum."

AHEM!

MR. SIMULIST, what are you doing on the Comos/Carl Sagan page at wikipedia? I just freaked out while doing some back-up research on Sagan for a comment I was thinking of making.

Scroll to the bottom.

I have absolutely always been enthralled with the tesseract. Of course, I always knew that was what your avatar was, I was just stunned to see it sitting at the bottom of the wiki entry.

For a long time now I've thought that all those Atlantis myths were really echoes from the future.

We are Atlantis.

I've always liked the tesseract, too. One of the reasons I chose it as my avatar was that, when I approach the sorts of subjects we talk about here at RI, I'm frequently left with the impression that if only I could see with eyes that perceived four dimensions, and not just three, I could grasp that elusive Something that would cause all the cosmic tumblers fall into place, and Everything might finally make sense.

Aren't LSD trails like seeing in four dimensions? I've never done but that's what it sounds like.

I've wanted to see in five dimensions or more since reading "Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene.
