Phil Hartman
Chris Farley
Bill Hicks
Gilda Radner
John Belushi
Jimi Hendrix
Jim Morrison
Janis Joplin

(granted some on the above list were probably from hard partying and the demand to constantly perform at a high level)

But what is this "level"? Who knows? Therein could be our hint at the cause of the neurosis.

Of some possible pertinence and probably nothing, Dana Carvey's mistaken heart procedure. After that he wound up coming out as a winger throwing his full support behind bush and war and stuff.

"My ex-attorney Lloyd Braun has joined this tribe of bottom-feeders by creating his own celebrity gossip website. What is wrong with that picture? When your own attorney starts defaming you, who do you turn to to defend you? Lloyd Braun also claims to have come up with the idea of The Sopranos, so he's obviously familiar with the ways and means of organized crime. Unfortunately, my brother Dennis has made matters worse by buying a house from Mr. Braun on property Braun originally bought with money he embezzled from me. I recently discovered, much to my surprise, that Dennis is also on the deed to my Santa Barbara property. This is also the work of Mr. Braun...

I am being embezzled from by this monstrous ring of accountants, estate planners, and lawyers, who are mercilessly slandering me and trying to kill my career, and I believe, murder me, in order to gain control of my royalties."

Lloyd Braun.

Don't know if this is a typical case of an addict, or if perhaps the star whackers have been talking to some of Charlie Sheen's friends.

Pals: Charlie Will Die This Week
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sh ... ender.html
After last week's fiasco you'd think CHARLIE SHEEN would chill out for a while.

But the wayward actor appears to be trying to outdo his New York hotel rampage with a huge bender in LA.

Sheen returned to the west coast just a day after he was hospitalised in New York after trashing his hotel room while with porn star CAPRI ANDERSON.

And he is now in the midst of a cocaine-fuelled bender so extreme that one friend has claimed: "Charlie Sheen is going to die this week".

According to the source he has been "partying with hookers" and using "massive amounts" of cocaine.

They said: "Charlie's cocaine use is out of control. The situation has got even worse.

"It's been a non-stop party of drugs and hookers since Charlie got home.

"He is completely out of control. No one can get through to him."

However, Sheen's manager Mark Burg says the reports are nothing but "reckless lies".

Burg said he went round to Charlie's LA home where he found the actor sitting on his sofa eating a sandwich.

He said: "He looked as normal as he's looked in a long time."

A genius too, in his day admittedly, having two names which were both names of corporations, the name of a town in Maryland and the dude was the original drummer for Steely Dan. Hands down, Chase is my most favoriteist comedic actor. Just looking at the guy (way back when) makes me laugh. Now he's just a shell of what he once was. I think this was due to cocaine use. In fact, when he was "roasted" in some weird thing that supposedly has been going on for a long while, one of his co-stars roasted him by saying he hasn't done a funny thing since he quit doing coke. Which is true! But, much weirdness surrounds these figures and as we can see, always will.

Chevy Chase is very good on Community. I actually enjoy that entire cast. It has very few things to say, other than about some vague notion of adult education. But it does operate very well from a representative, "american" diversity standpoint. There are even two characters representing both agnosticism and atheism. It is a joy to watch the two actors who play the characters Abed and Troy play off of one another, some of which I think is ad libbed.

Chase's character is great, as some polydivorced, scheming, bizarre sub-buddhist cult-victim, misogynistic prankster.

From Courthouse News (August 24, 2010)
http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/08/24/29848.htm

Randy Quaid Accuses Advisers of 22-Year Plot to Steal Assets

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Actor Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, claim their former lawyer and estate planner created a fake living trust in their name, stole their money and disqualified future lawyers from acting on their behalf.

"We believe the trust documents being used to steal our assets at the bank contain language that makes it possible for a new attorney(s) representing us to be disqualified," according to the complaint filed in Superior Court. "Since it is our money, property and assets at issue here we cannot be disqualified by the document language so we represent ourselves Pro-se here."

Quaid claims he and his wife bought a house in Montecito, Calif., in 1989 for $1.35 million. Quaid says he handed the details of the transaction off to his business manager, Warren Grant and his lawyer, Lloyd Braun, who is not listed as a defendant.

The next day, Quaid claims Braun and his wife, Lauren, attached their names to the deal's escrow account.

That got Braun access to Quaid's assets through a "pooled loan," allowing Braun to use Quaid's home equity for his own real estate deals without Quaid's knowledge, according to the complaint.

City National Bank allegedly played along with the plot because Braun designated it as the beneficiary of properties he bought with Quaid's equity.

In 1991, Quaid says he sold his Montecito home to then-Warner Bros. executive Bruce Berman, again letting Grant and Braun handle the sale.

But Quaid claims he recently found out that the home is still in his name.

He says the head financial officer at the Chase Bank's Pasadena branch told him the home never sold, that the loan was paid off, and that Quaid and his wife were still the rightful owners.

Quaid says Braun, Berman and Grant concocted the scheme in order to secure a "clearing house" through which they could steal Quaid's earnings from Warner Bros. projects.

Quaid claims Warner Bros. still owes him for a number of movies.

The Quaids claim Braun, Berman and their estate planner, Alan Watenmaker, set up a fake trust in 1983 in order to steal more of Quaid's money.

The men allegedly used a falsified probate file for a deceased Santa Barbara woman named Ronda L. Quaid and a fake driver's license to cash Quaid's checks at City National and deposit the money into the fake trust account.

Quaid says he discovered evidence of the alleged fraud this June.

He claims he went to City National Bank in Beverly Hills to request information about two mystery loans that were made in his name, but says bank staff refused to give him any information. He says they instead called the police when he demanded to see the loan statements.

Quaid says he discovered that the paperwork for a $1 million life insurance policy was missing from his City National safe deposit box. Quaid claims someone used it, along with his forged signature, to secure more loans in his name.

Quaid says Gavin Perdue, former head of City National Bank's Roxbury branch entertainment division, had "full knowledge" of the theft of his life insurance policy.

The 220-page lawsuit, which mixes attachments with notes scrawled over the pages in black marker alternating with the pages of the lawsuit, also suggests that someone had a plot to kill Quaid and his wife.

After City National Bank's estate planner allegedly told Evi Quaid that the bank preferred to manage the assets of "dead actors," she heard a man's voice on her cell phone in Texas saying, "'If you kill her, there's a lot of money in it for you.'"

"Evi wasn't sure if this was an actual threat on her life or meant to intimidate her as a witness, but this together with the stolen life insurance policy and the estate planner's insensitive remark, and now Alan Watenmaker, the estate planner acting very evasive when we request trust ID numbers and the fact that Watenmaker's firm did Michael Jackson's will and life insurance policy trust, has us very suspicious of their motives," the lawsuit states.

Quaid says his case has a few "striking similarities" to the situation Michael Jackson was in before his death. "Aside from the fact that we both used the same law firm to do our wills and trusts, one of Jackson's music attorneys was David Braun, Lloyd Braun's father. David Braun resides in Santa Barbara County where Jackson had a series of legal troubles brought on by false accusations before his death.

"Recently Evi and I have also been the subjects of false accusations in Santa Barbara over a paid hotel bill (the hotel tried at least five times to charge my wife's Chase credit card $73,000 for a $10,000 bill) ... Knowing what we know about them now, we firmly believe that Lloyd Braun, his father, David, and Watenmaker had something to do with our arrest in Santa Barbara County."

Quaid also claims his "'trusted advisors'" merged his assets with those of his brother, the actor Dennis Quaid, in an attempt to expand the theft.

Randy Quaid also blames his lawyer for talking his brother into buying two adjacent properties located on a sewage easement.

Quaid demands the criminal investigation unit of the IRS perform an immediate tax audit of all trust accounts, bank accounts and lines of credit in his name; an immediate revocation of all powers of attorney and all trustees of all of his accounts and trusts.

Quaid and his wife sued City National Bank, Gavin Perdue, Mariam Zakian, Paul Krasnow, Lauren Braun, Bruce Berman, Sandy Bresler, John Kelly, Steven Arcieri, Warren Grant, Joel Mandel, Barry Hirsch, Sean Shenassa, Mickey Segal and Kimberly Buffington.

Another story of a high-profile person getting scammed by the people they trust to take care of their money. Sounds to me like the Quaid's have a real basis for their flight and concerns.

Hmm... I'm just not seeing that. I defend CT a lot myself, but I'm expecting the guy to walk down the street in his tinfoil helmet at a near point in the future.

well, it seems like most of his claims are verifiable facts and a full audit should reveal the truth or falsehoods. Just imagine how maddening it would be to discover you still own a house you were told you sold, and that you name is on loans you never took out, and the bank has you arrested when you demand to see the paperwork. and people you no longer have faith in have power-of-attorney over much of your life-savings - and you're apparently having trouble terminating that delegated power... I'm sure the time he went in to the bank and got hauled off by the cops was not his first effort to straighten things out. He hired "professionals" to take care of their finances because obviously it's not an area of expertise. Now he's probably reluctant to trust anyone but doesn't know what to do.

Hollywood weasels have a LONG long history of screwing stars out of their money. If this is a CT, it's the most believable one I've ever seen. Granted he may be over reacting about them wanting to kill him, but even that fear doesn't seem baseless.

Yeah, and the stars keep hiring these "business managers" to take over their finances. I don't get it.

I have a very good friend who hit it big as a screenwriter and he did the same thing. WTF?? They must be pressured into it somehow by their attorneys and everyone else. It's well known that they get these people into debt as much as possible, usually by buying a big-ass house, so they have to keep working, and the leeches can keep getting their 10 - 15 percent.

The town is run by these leech gatekeepers by the way. I mean, you want to take gatekeeper, these are the gatekeepers of all gatekeepers..

The Quaid case bears some similarities to the one involving Columbia head David Begelman in the 70s. Read Indecent Exposure: A True Story of Hollywood and Wall Street. Short summary from Wikipedia:

David Begelman (August 26, 1921 – August 7, 1995) was an American Hollywood Agent and studio head

Born in New York City, Begelman worked at the Music Corporation of America (MCA) for more than 11 years, eventually becoming vice president. He left in 1960 to co-found the talent agency Creative Management Associates (CMA) with Freddie Fields. Their clients included Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli, Woody Allen, Richard Burton, Peter Sellers, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda, Rock Hudson, Carol Channing, and others.
He left CMA in 1973 to take over the floundering Columbia Pictures. Begelman recruited big-name stars from his former company, dramatically changing the company's image by producing such hits as Tommy (1975), Shampoo (1975), Murder by Death (1976), and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Begelman became among the first Hollywood agents to cross over and rise to the top of the studio system.

Embezzlement scandal

In February 1977, actor Cliff Robertson received a note from the Internal Revenue Service indicating he had received $10,000 from Columbia Pictures. He had never received the money, and discovered that his signature on the cashed paycheck had been forged. Robertson's report started a criminal investigation. The LAPD and the FBI verified that the $10,000 check was a forgery, and it was tracked to Begelman. He was ultimately sentenced to community service for the forgeries.

Columbia Pictures suspended Begelman on a paid vacation and announced its own investigation. It discovered Begelman had embezzled an additional $65,000 through other forged checks. But the board of directors wanted to keep the matter out of the press, and after a brief reinstatement, Begelman was quietly fired. The studio released a statement saying he had suffered emotional problems.

Despite the pressure to remain quiet, Robertson and his wife Dina Merrill spoke to the press. David McClintick broke the story in The Wall Street Journal in 1978, later turning it into the best-selling 1982 book Indecent Exposure. Robertson was blacklisted from the movie production industry for two years, which he spent producing documentaries.

A writer for New West magazine, working on this story, queried Begelman's claimed alma mater, Yale University, listed in his Who's Who entry. Yale responded that Begelman had never attended that university. New West said "Although Begelman was indicted for forgery and grand theft, the Hollywood types were more outraged that he had listed Yale in Who's Who. Apparently they figured that everybody steals money. It was the fact that he lied about Yale that drove them crazy."

Actor Cliff Robertson also claimed he had been blacklisted during the 1980s for coming forward about the Begelman affair, and had few roles during this period. He eventually had more success as a character actor, including a major role in the 2002 Columbia film Spider-Man.

Judy Garland management

In the early 1990s, a book written by Coyne Steven Sanders about the history of Judy Garland's CBS television series of 1963-64 devoted a chapter to possible embezzlement of Garland's funds by Begelman. Garland's estranged husband at the time, Sid Luft, hired an attorney to audit her income from the time Begelman began representing her with fellow agent Freddie Fields. It was discovered that several hundred thousand dollars was missing, much of it written in checks to "CASH" and endorsed by Begelman at various casinos in Las Vegas. Other entries in her accounts showed large sums paid for "protection" with no authoritization, all approved by Begelman, though Garland had no personal security. In addition, a 1963 Cadillac convertible, given to Garland as partial payment for appearances on Jack Paar's television program, was titled to Begelman. Garland never knew the car was part of her compensation for her appearance.

In addition, Begelman told Garland a photo existed of her, partially nude, having her stomach pumped in a hospital emergency room after a drug overdose in London, and that blackmailers were demanding $50,000 to turn over the picture and all negatives. As she was in negotiations with CBS at the time for her new TV series, Garland paid rather than face the adverse publicity and potentially damaging the deal's prospects. It was eventually determined by Luft's attorney that the check went to a holding company with a business address in New York City owned by Begelman. It was further traced to a personal account of Begelman.

Rather than confront Begelman at a time when he was playing such a pivotal role in her show business re-emergence, Garland decided to eat the financial losses based upon the promise of millions coming from the deal with CBS. Once her show was canceled, however, she and Luft sued Begelman for the hundreds of thousands he had allegedly stolen as well as $1 million in punitive damages. Due to her dire financial situation at the time, Garland was forced to settle the suit for royalties owed her by Capitol Records that Begelman and Fields, as her agents, had collected but were holding because of the lawsuit.
Later career

In 1980, Begelman returned to the production world and became CEO and president of MGM, but with the exception of Poltergeist, he was unable to repeat his success at Columbia. His apparent slump led to his departure from MGM before his four-year contract expired. Later he ran two smaller production companies, Sherwood Productions and Gladden Entertainment, where he had moderate successes with Mr. Mom (1983), The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), Mannequin (1987) and Weekend at Bernie's (1989). By the mid-1990s, however, Begelman declared bankruptcy.

In 1995, Begelman was found shot dead in the Los Angeles Century Plaza Hotel room, at the age of 73. His death was ruled a suicide.
