Substitute “angry” for “drunk” if you prefer. I’m sure Mr. Sheen was the very model of sobriety on the night in question.

There's nothing in the police report to warrant your implication though. My point was that you seem to have no trouble grabbing onto my statement about to "a drunken domestic dispute" without noting that the only reference to drinking issues in the report concerned the habits of Ms. Mueller, not Charlie Sheen.

Forget Donner—the one I’d really like to ask about the art crime angle would be the PI interviewed on CBS.

You mean self-described Chasen "acquaintance" and all-purpose self-promotional quote-machine John Nazarian, who used to be a cop though not a detective, and who now literally digs up dirt for divorce cases as a Hollywood PI?

Let's review what he said, shall we?

Nazarian said he's received tips that the case could involve money laundering or the legitimacy of some artwork.

He said, "Over the last couple of weeks we've gotten little tidbits of information, but I'm not sure whether that issue of money laundering and the artwork was involving her or one of her clients. It's not clear to me as to what those facts are."

Given his opening quote in the same story...

On "The Early Show on Saturday Morning," John Nazarian, a private investigator in Beverly Hills and acquaintance of Ronni Chasen's, said Harold Martin Smith could possibly be involved in Chasen's death - or not.

He said, "You know, like everything else involving this case, who knows? Is it possible? Sure. But, when you look at the character of this gentleman, it would seem to me that he just talked a great deal and was making himself sound like he was far more important than he really was. And, unbeknownst to him, he's standing there when two police officers, or how ever many were there show up, and he's realizing, he didn't kill anybody, but he now has a gun in his pocket and he's also made it very clear he was not going to go back to prison. He had done some time in prison and this could be a third strike here in California. And, quite frankly, he knew that when he was searched, the cops were going to find the gun. And he just took -- he literally checked out. He shot himself and killed himself."

...I very much doubt that he knows more than he's saying.

But then, if he told me he’d probably have to kill me. I'm not that curious ...

I don't think he's really all that much of a tough guy. He just plays one on TV.

Given Charlie Sheen’s reputation as a party animal, it seemed a reasonable enough assumption for me (you? we?) to make, but perhaps I/you/we was/were hasty. Therefore, I/we/you should immediately retract said comments, lest they further besmirch Mr. Sheen’s reputation …

Thanks for your analysis of Nazarian. Maybe he's trying to get a part in the Ronni Chasen movie?

He was a co-executor, and they were reportedly on good terms. Have you tried reading the will? She stipulates that half the estate default to him if the niece she names as her main legatee pre-deceases her.

It stems from taking the suppositions of folks like Max Emanuel Donner and John Nazarian entirely too seriously, IMHO.

sunny wrote:Then it is definitely worth a look into Chasen's background and finances. Where was she getting her money?

Well, there's this explanation:

Aside from a half-dozen charities, Chasen left the bulk of her estimated $6 million estate to her sweet-natured niece, Melissa Cohen, Larry’s daughter. (Chasen had been a shrewd longterm player of the stock market and had done very well investing in platinum. )

And also this one:

Nor was she averse to being “the other woman” in the lives of several men of an advanced age who lacked good looks but wielded power and wealth. The savvy but rotund Warren Cowan was Chasen’s mentor—and lover. “Everyone knew she had a long-term affair with Warren [whose wives included the actress Barbara Rush],” said a former colleague, “and he paid her very well and gave her an unlimited expense account. Oh God, yes! Warren paid for her apartment, her hair, her car, those Neiman clothes.” And they remained friends until the end. Chasen “sat next to him, holding his hand” at Cedars-Sinai Hospital during his final weeks in 2008, the former colleague added, “with the wife in the room.”

After Cowan, according to several of her friends, Jim Robinson, the car tycoon and founder of Morgan Creek Productions, was another important relationship in her life, beginning in 1988 when she represented his company. For several years, she had an intense relationship with a New York media mogul, also married, that dissolved about five years ago. More recently, she was interested in a businessman who lived in Palm Springs. “She specialized in rich men,” quipped a friend.

It adds up. Both quotes can be found here.

Did she perhaps have a hand in any of this probate abuse?

What probate abuse constitutes "this probate abuse," to your way of thinking?

Thanks for the link to the will. Interesting contradiction with the quote in the ABC story:

With Smith no longer a person of interest, investigators are searching for other potential suspects. "Family members are always going to be of importance," said Sax. "Our biggest clue is to look in the will. Who was left out? Ronni Chasen's brother. It doesn't seem that they've had a very close relationship until their mother died in 2000. Why is it that he is so hung up on this road rage theory when no one supports that theory? Clues are making us wonder what involvement, if any, does he have."

A lot of misinformation flying around. "Caveat lector" applies equally to ABC News and the Examiner ...

This is an old will from 1994. Reportedly there is a newer will that hasn't been found yet. It would be unusual for a person with Chasen's assets not to update her will for 16 years.

According to supporting documents, another will was prepared for Chasen in 2006, but it has not yet been located. Lawrence Cohen, Chasen's brother who is applying to be the special administrator, says he believes the will may be in a safe deposit box.

From: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/the_awf ... ronni.html

Five Lingering Questions About Ronni Chasen's Murder

To say we're still confused by the Ronni Chasen murder is a painful understatement.

Ronni's whole horrifying saga plays like an episode of Law & Order: Hollywood, except one thing is missing: a resolution. And while we have hundreds of questions about this par-tick whodunit (ya know, like what beef Ronni actually had with her niece), we rounded up our top five queries that most certainly would help solve the case if they were answered:

1. What did Harold Smith have to do with it? Was Harold Smith a hit man...or just plain crazy? While those close to Ronni (and the Beverly Hills cops) now lean toward the latter, he was a momentary "person of interest" in the case, following a tip from America's Most Wanted. One neighbor even claims Harold told her that he "murdered that bitch."

But did he have anything to do with it? Unlikely. And we may never know, seeing as Harold shot and killed himself when police tried to serve him a search warrant. Seems suspicious (duh), but cops are now saying that he may have just been looking for 15 minutes of effed-up fame.

2. Who benefited in Ronni's updated will? Or was there even a new will at all? The will on record, which shafts the aforementioned niece by only leaving her 10 bucks, is from 1994, and some claim another will was drafted in 2006 (yet no record of this will seems to exist). But Martha Smilgis, who was coexecutor of Chasen's 1994 will, says Ronni talked about "rearranging" things in her will just two months before her murder.

That's not to say that Ronni ever actually redid her last will and testament, but if an updated will exists, we wonder what changed? And even if it doesn't, what exactly made Ronni want to redo it so close to what would eventually be her death?

3. Was Ronni paying off someone's gambling debt? One of the many (and more realistic) theories behind Ronni's murder is that she was involved in paying off debts for a loved one. While no one has been able to track down any seedy payments and no family member has 'fessed to the debt, pals close to Chasen think this biz—or some other serious kind of money situation—may have gone bad, which led to Ronni getting killed.

Even if Ronni didn't pay off someone else's debt with her life, her history seems to indicate she'd been targeted before by someone who knew her business well, including a robbery at gunpoint years ago where hidden jewelry was stolen. Might the two incidents be connected?

4. Was Ronni a victim of ongoing gang violence? Many think that Ronni's murder was premeditated, with a hit man hired to take her out as she drove home from a ritzy Hollywood premiere. Recent reports from the Daily Beast claim R.C.'s death may have been random, after all, and was another gang-related crime in a wave that also included two similar gun-related incidents a week before and after Ronni's murder.

"No, there are no reports of these types of crimes in the city of Beverly Hills," says BHPD Sgt. Shan Davis. Hmmm, consider us perplexed on this one. The police may pooh-pooh it, but we're not entirely sure we believe them.
5. Who killed Ronni Chasen? There may be hundreds of questions, but the numero uno Q is: Who killed Ronni? Was it a hit man with "cop-killer" bullets? Did Ronni know the killer? And did Ronni know the motive behind her own murder?

Will we ever get answers?

It's not looking too good. Sorry, Ronni, you deserved better.

Sylvie Cachay, Va. native fashion designer, found dead in N.Y.; boyfriend charged

A New York fashion designer who graduated from Marymount University in Arlington and grew up in McLean, decorating the walls of her childhood bedroom with magazine cutouts of runway models, was found dead in an overflowing bathtub in a swank Manhattan hotel early Thursday. Sylvie Cachay, 33, was faceup and had bruising near her neck and an apparent bite mark on her body, according to a spokesman for the New York Police Department, but the cause of death has not been determined.

Cachay's boyfriend, Nicholas Brooks, the son of songwriter Joseph Brooks, has been charged with attempted murder and strangulation, according to the Associated Press. Officials did not explain why the charge was attempted murder.

On Friday, a steady flow of relatives and friends streamed into the Cachay family's expansive white brick house in McLean, tucked into a forested neighborhood adjacent to the Beltway. Cachay, who was a dual citizen of the United States and Peru, came from a large family of Peruvian immigrants. She was born and grew up in McLean with father Antonio, a surgeon with a private practice who is affiliated with Inova Fairfax Hospital; mother Sylvia, an artist; and brother Patrick, who works in the financial services industry.

Two of Cachay's cousins looked at photos of her Friday afternoon.

"She had amazing fashion taste even when she was a little kid," said cousin Francoise Jakobsson, 39, a marketing executive from Ellicott City. "She did a beautiful job putting on her makeup. She had perfect skin - she never had a pimple growing up. What kind of teenager are you that you don't ever have a blemish?"

Until the market tanked in 2008 and she lost her investors, Cachay, who lived in the West Village, was starting to make waves in the New York fashion world with a line of luxury swimwear called Syla, which featured swimsuit sets that retailed at Bloomingdale's for $200 or more. She was inspired by the leisure-class portraiture of the British photographer Cecil Beaton, according to a two-page spread in Elle magazine three years ago, which also mentioned her penchant for Christian Louboutin shoes, her admiration of Austrian artists Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, and her ideal customer type: "a glamorous woman on holiday."

A former business associate of Cachay's described the young designer as "a rising star" who was stunted by a bad economy and hoped to restart her line in the near future. At the time of her death, she was the head designer for Anne Cole, a mid-range swimwear line that dabbles in trends.

"She was a very, very valued employee," said Maryann Bonardi, office manager for In Mocean Group, which owns Anne Cole. "She was extremely talented, as well as very beautiful."

Cachay had a membership at the SoHo House, a hotel and exclusive club that she had reportedly been staying at after a small bedroom fire at her apartment this week, according to family members. There were no outward signs of a struggle, and bottled prescription drugs were found in the hotel room, according to AP.

The hotel staff discovered Cachay after guests on the first floor complained of water leakage, which stemmed from the overflowing tub. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Nicholas Brooks, her boyfriend of six months, arrived with her at the hotel several hours earlier, but he was not on the scene when police were called. He returned to the room while authorities were investigating.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Cachay's cousins said they knew little about Brooks, the 24-year-old son of Joseph Brooks, who won an Academy Award in 1978 for penning the super-ballad "You Light Up My Life," from the film of the same name.

Still Questions About Ronni Chasen Murder

The Beverly Hills police held a press conference on Wednesday stating that they believe that Howard Martin Smith, a career criminal who served time in state prison, shot and killed Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen. Police announced that lab tests revealed a preliminary match between the murder weapon presumed to have killed publicist Ronni Chasen and the gun used by Howard Smith to kill himself. (Smith committed suicide last week before he could be questioned by law enforcement.) The Beverly Hills Police stated that Smith acted alone in killing Chasen and police don’t believe the murder was a professional hit, but rather a “robbery gone bad.” The police theory is that Smith was on his bicycle and intended to rob Chasen, but she sped off after he shot her. After listening to the details of the press conference, one of my police sources familiar with the investigation questioned the credibility of the investigation and quipped, “If I’m murdered and you find my body in Beverly Hills, please drag my body to LAPD. Even if you have to leave a bloody trail.”

Q: How did the shooter come and go from the scene of the crime on a bicycle without being spotted?
A: “You can not tell me that a black man riding around on a bicycle at midnight in Beverly Hills did not get stopped at one time by the police,” notes the police source with knowledge of the investigation. According to Mapquest, the distance from the 5600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles to the 800 block of Whittier Drive in Beverly Hills is almost seven miles. The source also questions why this guy who was so allegedly desperate for money bothered to bike all the way to Beverly Hills to rob someone in a car when he can do the same thing closer to home? It’s been reported that neighbors heard the gunshots, called 911, and arrived at the murder scene before Chasen took her last breath. So how did Smith manage to bike down Sunset or Whittier without being spotted by either witnesses or the police? Especially when this part of Beverly Hills has considerable traffic late at night because of its proximity to the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Q: How did the shooter aim so deadly while on a bicycle?
A: My police source asks where Smith acquired his shooting expertise. It seems unlikely that he went to the shooting range given that he was having money troubles and was behind on his rent. And how did he manage to shoot so accurately while sitting on a bike? The BHPD stated that a bicycle was found at Smith's suicide scene and it was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department and will be turned over to BHPD. The fact that the bicycle is still in the LAPD's possession makes my source wonder whether the BHPD has had an opportunity to examine whether it was even possible for the suspect to have been on his bicycle by the passenger window and shoot directly in the chest. “One would think that they’d have conducted these type of tests before the press conference,” notes the police source.

Q: How did Smith manage to pick up all the shell casings at the murder scene and still get away?
A: Since no shell casings were found at the murder scene, Smith somehow managed to shoot Chasen, pick up all the shell casings, and still bike away without being seen by any witnesses. “So it’s nighttime and it’s dark and they expect me to believe this guy is going to waste time to get off his bike in a nice quiet neighborhood to go and pick up shell casings?” my police source askss. “Those things eject backward. They’re rolling all over the place. I don’t believe a streetwise guy who spent time in state prison just stood there and picked up a shell casing on Whittier boulevard and Sunset and then biked away without being noticed.” The police source also doesn’t understand why, if this was a botched robbery, Smith bothered to stay around and pick up shell casings -- but didn’t bother to reach into Chasen’s broken car window and grab her purse.

Q: Why did BHPD say there was a "preliminary" ballistics match?
A: The police stated that preliminary ballistics match showing the gun used to kill Ronni Chasen was the same gun used by Harold Smith to kill himself. My police source asks the public to question what constitutes a preliminary match. “Either it’s a match or it isn’t,” says the source. “There is one test. You need to think of ballistics like DNA. Either it’s your DNA or it’s not.” The source also asks why there was no discussion about where Smith got the gun or ammunition that he used to kill Chasen and himself. “Where the gun came from? How did Smith end up with the gun? Was it used in other crimes? Where did he get those hollow points from? They’re supposed to keep a record of people who buy bullets. Did they check every gun shop in the area to find out the list of who they sold hollow points to? You know they’ve got a list.”

Q: Who is the tipster who contacted America’s Most Wanted?
A: The BHPD on Wednesday stated that if Smith is the shooter, then the person who tipped off America’s Most Wanted will likely get a reward. However, the police source familiar with the investigation wants to know mor. Hs it possible that this tipster knows more about the crime than he’s told police? Have police really had sufficient time to investigate the tipster and whether he had a connection to Smith?

Q: Why hold a press conference when BHPD said the investigation is only "60% to 70%" complete?
A: My police source familiar with the investigation said: “I have a bad feeling that this press conference is going to end up being the defense’s opening statement at trial. The police have a lot of investigating to do before they pronounce that Smith acted alone or that he didn’t have any connection to Ronnie Chasen. They need to find out, who did Smith hang out with?”

Q: If this was simply a random crime, then why did Smith shoot Chasen so many times if he didn’t even know her?
A: The police stated they believe that Ronni Chasen’s murder was a random act of violence and that Smith had no connection to her. However, my police source with knowledge of the investigation still remains unconvinced about the BHPD’s theory of the crime. “This is a not a random homicide or a robbery gone bad. This was personal,” argues the source. “You don’t have a victim of a carjacking or robbery shot multiple times. Look at the statistics. People shoot someone multiple times for maximum effect.” Although the police stated at Wednesday’s press conference that they believed Smith acted alone and that they don’t believe that Chasen’s murder was a professional hit, at least two of my police sources with some knowledge of the investigation don't buy it. “I don’t believe that this streetwise punk who’s done time in prison agreed to kill someone without at least getting some sort of a down payment. They need to look at where Smith spent his money. When I first heard they were having this press conference, I couldn’t believe it,” adds police source. “And then I realized, 'Wow, they’re really going to just blame it all on the dead guy.'”

Good questions. Another: WHY are the police so anxious to cover up the Chasen murder? Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of police procedures knows this:

“Either it’s a match or it isn’t,” says the source. “There is one test. You need to think of ballistics like DNA. Either it’s your DNA or it’s not.”

So sloppy it looks desperate.

WOULD YOU LOOK AT FUCKING THIS!!!!!!

(not "fucking" it -- you know what I mean)

Earlier today we learned that sadly, George Hickenlooper, an incredibly prolific filmmaker and documentarian over the past 20 years, passed away in his sleep in Denver. Hickenlooper was currently making the festival rounds for his film Casino Jack starring Kevin Spacey, about the lobbyist Jack Abramoff. No cause of death has been given yet, as many sites are reporting the news as it is made available.

Hickenlooper’s documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, documenting the the Apocalypse Now production, was one of my favorite supplements on the Apocalypse Now release from 2007. While I haven’t seen much else from his filmography, Criterion Collection fans will have the opportunity to see another of his works next month, when we get the America Lost and Found The BBS Story box set.

In 1991, George Hickenlooper directed Picture This, documenting the making of The Last Picture Show, and the film will be included as a supplement on the upcoming Criterion release of the film. This little piece of news was actually teased at in the comments section over on Hollywood Elsewhere, months ago before Criterion had officially announced the box set.
