Royal newlyweds called 'parasites'

By KEVIN DOUGHERTY, The Gazette June 1, 2011

While calling them "parasites" - because taxpayers are picking up the tab for their Canadian visit - Québec solidaire MNA Amir Khadir says if Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, paid their own way, he would gladly show them around his Plateau Mont Royal neighbourhood.

Like all elected members of the Quebec assembly, Khadir took an oath to Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's head of state.

"The taxpayers should not pay for that," he told reporters, alluding to the impending visit in July of the newlyweds, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. "Do you want your taxes used for a royal couple?"

But since the couple are not paying their way, Khadir said he would participate in a demonstration planned for July 3 in Quebec City if he is in the provincial capital that day.

...

"I would like the prince and princess (sic) to know that they have been brought here as a circus act," Khadir added.

Khadir said he cannot accept such privilege or birthright "from ancient times."

"We don't need a monarchy," he said. "Every man and woman is equal."

FWIW, Khadir is the only legislative member for the fledgling Québec solidaire, but he is Quebec's most popular provincial politician, and publicly supports the NDP (which doesn't have a Quebec provincial party affiliate).

HA! good for him!

it's so TRUE ...
When Diana and Charles came to my hometown the government spent all kinds of money - they did the most ridiculous things like pave the HALF of the street that the car would drive down and wow - the security was frightening. (I guess that figures)

Love it!

The Queen is literally a Welfare Queen, the biggest one in the world.

I like this guy, whoever he is. (knowing absolutely nothing else about him except what is posted here).

Why should Welfare Queens and their Welfare Princes make anybody else spend a dime on them? Aren't they handed just tons of money to live their lives?

the whole extended Saudi-style "Family" of in-bred relatives & hangers on is undoubtedly unwarranted but I'm ambivalent on the senior customer-facing Royal worthies - I wouldn't swap places with them, a gilded cage in my view bought at the price of the small sense of personal autonomy & freedom we tend to take for granted & I also doubt if Presidents travel any cheaper

given the nature of the modern professional political class from which any alternative would emerge ( www.telegraph.co.uk ) long may the hereditary principle block those actually desirous of the status & pomp of Head of State from getting their hands on it.

You know (I'm sure it has happened?), but I do not recall a single visit to the United States by British royalty in my lifetime. Hmm. Something for me to speculate on in my head for a bit for my "not ready for primetime" theories as I work tonight. But does anyone recall any kind of announced visit to the US ever? I could be way off and it happens all the time and I've just dense.

^ a couple of years back Philip and his new bride-of-Frankenstein Camilla showed up in NYC to gloat over ground zero. As far as I recall that's about all they did.

I think you mean Chahles.

I vote not to drop the British royal family just yet. They've only just started to be even slightly photogenic...

The Crown is a corporation sole, I don't see any reason why we can't just keep it going without a person in charge of it.

But yes, nice to have royals you can wank to again. Gawd bless you ma'am, and Gawd bless your sister's arse.

Jesus. And I write "I've just dense". I was seriously running out the door when I wrote that.

There wasn't a visit by the Queen during Bush's term in office? I remember photos of her looking at * as if he'd just farted in her presence...

I believe she was here in 2007 and laid a wreath at ground zero.

I believe I heard on the news that they were coming to Yosemite, to stay in the lodge that Stephen King made famous in the shining. They are taking the presidential suite there, in July...

FYI the Stanley Hotel is in Estes park, CO, and was the inspiration for the Shining:

Thanks for the correction: Then there's this: The exterior for the original movie was filmed at the Timberland Lodge in Oregon. The interior was based on the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, but was specifically built on soundstages at Elstree Studios, London.
