July/August 2005

Dave Lindorff

Pasadena residents didn’t get to read about the exploits of local celebrity Dr. Robert Nelson, who, besides being a Jet Propulsion Lab photo analyst who helped present those dramatic photos of Saturn’s rings and moons, also gave the lie to White House claims that the bulge seen on Bush’s back during the presidential debates was “just a wrinkle.”

They didn’t get to read Nelson’s account of how his photo analysis of Bush’s jacket—a story that would have increased speculation that the president was wearing a hearing device during the debates—almost made it into the New York Times before being killed by top editor Bill Keller (Extra!, 1–2/05).

They didn’t read all this in their local daily, the Pasadena Star-News, because senior editors at that paper killed the story on Saturday, April 30, right before publication in the Sunday edition—apparently for political, not journalistic, reasons.

The Star-News is the oldest holding of MediaNews Group, a newspaper and television station chain owned and run by William Dean Singleton, one of the U.S.’s more conservative media moguls. Singleton was singled out by Editor & Publisher (1/26/04) as one of several newspaper chain owners who contributed money to the Bush/Cheney re-election campaign last year. MediaNews Group also owns the Denver Post and the L.A. Daily News.

What role, if any, Singleton and his politics had in the killing of Star-News reporter Gary Scott’s story on Nelson and the Bush bulge is unclear. What is known is that the story was filed, edited and set to run, that a photographer had been assigned and had taken pictures of Nelson at home with his photo analysis equipment, and that it was killed at the last minute.

Several sources confirm that the story was axed—and immediately wiped from the paper’s computer system—on orders of Star-News executive editor Talmadge Campbell, who oversees the operations of the Star-News and two other papers, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the Whittier Daily News, from an office in San Gabriel. Sources say that Campbell, a former Texan and outspoken Bush supporter, does not normally get involved in day-to-day decisions like what features run—or don’t run—in the Pasadena paper.

Star-News editor Larry Wilson described Scott as a “fantastic” reporter. Asked if it was true that Scott’s story was killed for political reasons by Campbell, Wilson did not offer a denial, saying only that the Star-News, “like most good newspapers, will not discuss stories that had been in production unless they appear in the paper.”

Executive editor Campbell confirmed that he killed Scott’s Nelson story, but he declined to give an explanation for what he conceded was a rare interference in the paper’s daily operation. “It’s entirely an internal matter. In doesn’t involve anyone in New York, Mother Jones or you especially,” he told Extra!.

Said an obviously frustrated Nelson, “The scientific community last November produced very credible evidence suggesting the president may have been cheating in the debates. Responsible reporters at the New York Times and the Star-News have attempted to report this news to their readers but their efforts were quashed by upper management. The founders of this nation understood the importance of an informed public, but given what has just happened, one is tempted to ask: Does the term ‘free press’ apply only to those who can afford to own one?”

Was this article helpful to you? oh geez, I remember emailing several sites that were claiming they spotted a "device"... it was a freakin t-shirt.
I WISHED it wasn't, but all photo evidence showed it was.

besides, why use all sorts of whacky detectable wires when all it takes is something the size of a pin inserted in an ear or two.
consider that these are commercially available to regular consumers:

note in this second image the 'removal filament' is what is showing.. this filament is not necessary for function.

then figure he could have easily had a custom-built reciever that was even less detectable.

but does it do crypto?

Postby glubglubglub » Mon Aug 15, 2005 10:30 am

Sending the audio signal over the air unencrypted might be too big of a risk to take...and I'd be surprised if anything on the open market did crypto in a package that small.

device

Postby darkbeforedawn » Mon Aug 15, 2005 10:30 am

the "device" Bush was wearing showed up as a huge bulge in the back of his sports coat. Everyone saw it including Jay Leno. The Nasa scientist in the above cited article analyzed it through special photo enhancement used also in space probes and found the exact type and model of transmitter/receiver used.... so ear devices really are not what is meant by my post.

ok, the disjoint is that the earpiece IS a wireless transmitter, but there's a relay pack on his back. that explains both scenarios... there is a pack, but no wires running up his neck.

apparently the wireless portion of the signal IS being picked up on occasion.. found numerous references, including this one.

Suggestions that Bush may have using this technique stem from a D-day event in France, when a CNN broadcast appeared to pick up -- and broadcast to surprised viewers -- the sound of another voice seemingly reading Bush his lines, after which Bush repeated them. Danny Schechter, who operates the news site MediaChannel.org, and who has been doing some investigating into the wired-Bush rumors himself, said the Bush campaign has been worried of late about others picking up their radio frequencies -- notably during the Republican Convention on the day of Bush's appearance. "They had a frequency specialist stop me and ask about the frequency of my camera," Schechter said. "The Democrats weren't doing that at their convention."

Your "t-shirt" notion

Postby Ferry Fey » Mon Aug 15, 2005 2:00 pm

I was following the issue quite closely at the time, and I don't recall anyone else thinking it was a t-shirt.

Would you like to supply some links of the "bulge" photos in question, and links to images of t-shirts which support that notion?

ok, I've been searching through images for like an hour.. here's the best I can do considering most people don't take pictures of backsides!

This is the picture I assume is being discussed.

and the type of tshirt that it could be is like this. Maybe his has a lower back, some expensive designer model?

Here's more men's underclothes.

Considering that all three pieces of clothing (tshirt, suit shirt, suit jacket) may have labels.. it's not horribly far fetched to think the bulge could be a side effect. Oh, I just learned the name of that stupid loop thing on most men's dress shirts: "locker loop" - but I can't find a single store that has a picture of one... here's the closest I got.

This isn't definite proof that it's NOT a box, but I don't like to jump to conclusions when there are definitely other options. If there was/is more evidence that it's a box, then yeah lets find it!

Like I said, I tried and tried finding pictures of suit backs. Here's a few that show some kind of bulge between shoulders.
small lump
line going straight down back due to pleats
woman's jacket.

I'm a photochopper who enhances ghost pictures so I know how easy it is to magnify small details, and those lighting conditions were harsh enough to magnify small defects on their own. So although I'd like solid proof that we literally have a puppet president, I can't nod along with the provided image.

[edit] forgot to mention that if it's a silk suit, rather than wool, it would also be thinner and more prone to show stuff through it.

Edited by: ZeroHaven at: 8/15/05 3:24 pm

regarding "underwear"

Postby darkbeforedawn » Mon Aug 15, 2005 8:00 pm

Zerohave--Underwear???!!!! you have got to be kidding! In a long life of seeing men in suits, I have never, I repeat never seen evidence of their underwear showing through the jackets---ESPECIALLY UNDERWEAR WITH TAILS GOING OFF TO THE SIDE. Whose side are you on anyway?? The guy we call president is too stupid to hold a debate with someone of normal or above mental attributes. He was desperate (or more likely his handlers were) This is not a radical notion. It is just simple facts.
Our presidents have been "puppets" for years. God only knows who is running this madhouse. Or does anyone else out there know?

I repeat never seen evidence of their underwear showing through the jackets
Ok, maybe you haven't. bulge

Postby smiths » Tue Aug 16, 2005 1:30 am

if the unusual shaped bulge on his back was the only sign that he is a muppet then it would not be conclusive,
but the long pauses with his eyes flicking about and the totally vacuous manner in which he verbalises his sentences suggest someone who is listening to cues.
not to mention the genuinely disturbing video i have seen on the net demonstrating bush's total mental degeneration over a fifteen year period.
dementia, manchurian meltdown, monkey boy?
i dont know but i dont think he is fit to operate a tv remote control let alone a nuclear hair trigger control

re: Bush Bulge not only indication he was wired ...

Postby Starman » Tue Aug 16, 2005 3:19 pm

I agree with Smiths observation that Bush's actions and speech-mannerism during the debates strongly support the suspicion he was wired and recieving answer-cues from an off-stage coach -- Bush has shown he's virtually ignorant about world events and that he's simply incapable of 'thinking on his feet', responding to difficult and probing questions about politics, economics, military policy, history, legal and moral issues with much more than a trivial off-the-cuff remark, more like a parodic quip than a substantive response.

Numerous sources for detailed photos and commentary bear this out: I sure think there's something here; The France incident, where electronic ghost-audio surprised the assembled newsmen and audience sure suggests Bush was simply repeating his lines. Numerous untypical (for Bush) mis-pronounciations and ackward phrasing and seeming slipups during the televised debates also bear this suspicion out.
Starman

Bush Bulges: Photo Album w/Remote-receiever details, numerous events
--Excellant Overview--
Does Bush have a device under his Jacket?
