Leonard Cohen, Operative? (Ann Diamond material)

Postby guruilla » Mon Aug 24, 2015 11:02 pm

I came across Ann Diamond by chance while reading a local (BC) zine called Geist. I then listened to this recent interview she gave from a Greek toilet for the Friday Farcast: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/freeassoci ... nn-diamond

From a blogpost by Diamond:

Over the winter of 1980-81, on the island of Hydra, Leonard seemed to go through a religious conversion. He began expressing many right-wing political views and fundamentalist religious beliefs. In the three years since I had known him, he had struck me as mainly "apolitical and spiritual", but now he seemed obsessed with supporting Ronald Reagan's plans for a new America. He often came across as a totally different personality and I thought he might be having some sort of mental breakdown. He was spending much of his time drinking with a group of alcoholic millionaires and their hangers-on, including a former Swiss mercenary who had been in the Belgian Congo, and a Dominican woman who went by the nickname "Black Maggie."

I began realizing that the image I had of Leonard as a kind of older brother to the hippie generation, was highly inaccurate. He had even started combing his hair straight back in Reagan-esque fashion, and was spouting a new ideology that shocked me at the time. Later I would hear the same ideas from the mouths of high-profile neo-conservatives like Irving Krystol, William F. Buckley, and the Bushes -- but in 1980, it sounded like something out of a 1950s brainwashing manual. On one occasion, he told me that the world had been created 6,000 years ago by the collision of "black fire" with "white fire." I asked him, if that was so, how he accounted for dinosaurs and their relics. He said the dinosaurs were a hoax.I worried about his mental health.

....

Meanwhile, along with changes in personal style, Leonard had embraced drastic views about Armageddon and the ultimate destiny of Israel as a Light Unto the Nations. He made it seem that converting to Judaism would be a necessary life-raft in the End Times, which were already upon us. He seemed to be handing me an ultimatum: "You're either with us, or you're against us." I pondered his kind offer of marriage, although what he had in mind seemed to be some kind of collective wedding with himself as the Messiah, surrounded by an army of handmaidens.

Divine retribution, disaster, all-out war -- these were his themes. It was not my kind of scene, and neither was Hydra, where Leonard had got his start as a cult figure, even appearing in LIFE Magazine in 1960, several years before he had released any of his later-to-be famous songs. His lady friend, Marianne Jensen, appears in some of these photos, along with her estranged husband Axel Jensen and son Axel Jr., who as a child was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

There's more about Cohen & the Rothschilds, moving to Hydra, hanging out in Cuba with Castro, & so on.

I have a PDF of her Cohen-related memoir & will post anything of particular interest once I read it. As a long-time Cohen fan who even sang one of his songs at my mother's funeral (the same one Diamond cites as containing inside info about Allan Dulles!), this is an area of intrigue I find pretty irresistible.

He was brought up in the Miles W. Mathis stuff wasn't he? I wonder when this Ann Diamond material was put out there. My father found an angry, bitter note about him inside a library book at the University of Toronto accusing him of all sorts of backstabbing and skullduggery. Then again, a charismatic, flamboyant person like Cohen would provoke those kinds of reactions from jilted, disturbed people regardless of his involvement in RI-type weirdness. :eeyaa

^^^I wrote that message before I'd gotten very far into the blog post. Wow. Her description of seeing someone "shift" is MUCH more believable than someone like Icke's. I think I've seen what Diamond is describing.

This blog is "too weird". I'm Canadian and from a lower-middle class background, I haven't exactly spent time in the sorts of circles this woman is describing, yet what she writes is full of little details that resonate with me due to the setting. Not to mention her accounts are incredibly lucid and coherent given the subject matter.

From Ann Diamond's The Man Next Door:

In effect he had traded his freedom for what he now had.
Fame – that was part of it. Money in the bank, although how much
was a mystery. A name. A position. A calling. A predicament. How
all this had come about was never really clear. Fate had had a hand
in it, he intimated. His was a world of obedience, to some force
outside his own will. I assumed he meant that God made unusual
demands on men like him. Soldiers of the Lord. In God’s army
there were punishments for non-compliance. “They keep getting
worse and worse.” It seemed to me he might be joking, as a way to
minimize neurosis. Being Leonard couldn’t be all bad. “You don’t
know,” he said. I didn’t.

Nor could I guess how little his suffering had to do with
God or religion. It had to do with the people he worked for. In
whose eyes, music was a cover, spirituality a tool for manipulating
minds. He was good at that, and they had many uses for him. They
had no intention of letting him go free. He accepted their terms,
and the assignments they sent his way, each one putting him deeper
in their debt to them.

I know that now, but at the time I couldn’t see beyond the
persona that everyone sees. The singer/songwriter, monkishly
dedicated to his craft. Had their not been other Leonards, there
would have been many fewer songs. The songwriter needed the
secret deeds of these others to write those spare yet emotionally
convoluted lyrics that hold such hypnotic fascination for audiences.
I’m sure God sometimes visited him, and watched over him
in the Tower of Song. But let’s not confuse the two Leonards – the
one that went on missions, and the one that dealt with the guilt by
translating it into songs. The advantage of being a poet is that one’s
statements of fact often come out sounding like metaphors.

I stepped into an avalanche
It covered up my soul
When I am not this hunchback that you see
I sleep beneath the golden hill

All week, in his daily talks, the Roshi had analyzed the Peace
Movement, focusing on the error of seeking “peace” in a world of
change. In his final talk of the retreat, the Roshi began speaking
about his most famous student, Leonard Cohen. He listed his many
accomplishments and ending his talk with the strange and
provocative statement: “I am thinking of letting Leonard Cohen
buy me a gun.”

....

Postscript to a Never-Ending Story

"Fellow believers, 'There is no safety in the threefold world; it is like a
burning house.' – Record of Rinzai

Diana’s life parallels my own. We both met Leonard when
we were children, through the classified mind control project
known as MKULTRA. As children, both of us were placed in a
special program for psychically gifted children. Diana’s secret career
in the military began on bases in New Brunswick. Later, she says,
her mother moved to Montreal and worked for the Cohen family as
a domestic. At 18, at Expo 67, someone introduced her to Leonard,
then a rising star and darling of Canadian media. She went on to
have a brief career in regional television, back in New Brunswick.
By the mid-70s, she had met a number of people in the
entertainment business, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono, at
whose suggestion she moved to in Denver, CO, and got involved in
Primal Scream Therapy. Her therapy sessions were unearthing early
childhood memories including sexual abuse and military
programming.

In early September of 1979, just after the summer on
Hydra, around the time I returned to Canada from Germany after
saying goodbye to Annu, Diana claims she met Leonard in Denver
where he performed in a small club. She doesn’t remember the
name of the club, only that man suggested she come to the concert.
Later, Leonard would claim it was love at first sight.
Here is where it gets terribly interesting, or just plain
terrible. Soon afterwards, another man asked Diana out on a date,
took her back to his place, and assaulted her. In the midst of this
violent rape, the door to the apartment burst open, and Leonard
Cohen walked in with a camera crew. The men began filming a
scene that quickly turned into a gang rape. Then she says, Leonard
held a gun to her head. “You like to be hurt, don’t you? Say it!”
Another man pulled out a pile of bills and told Leonard to “snuff
her.” As she was crying and pleading for her life, a little girl was
brought in. Leonard told them to “get her out of here – and bring
her to me later.”

It had to have all been planned beforehand, with Diana the
chosen victim. Snuff films brought in tens of thousands, and
Leonard in those days was short of cash. One of his Montreal
contacts, involved in the pornography business, had been on Hydra
a few weeks earlier, but mysteriously vanished at around the time
she encountered the film crew in the Denver apartment.
Leonard refused to pull the trigger. He told the crew to
leave, and take the child with them. He and Diana were left alone to
spend the night together. They fell in love.

In a further fairytale twist, worthy of Hollywood’s cocaine fuelled
fantasy-factories, the would-be pornographer and his
intended victim stared into each other’s eyes and fell deeply in love.
A cosmic romance was born that would span more than two
decades and unleash a string of Greatest Hits – beginning with
Hallelujah, which Leonard began writing that very night. Offers of
marriage, a promised house: “What kind would you like?” he asked
her. “A wooden one,” she replied, wondering if she even liked him.
This is her story. I didn’t drag it out of her – she told it to
me in response to my simple question: “How did you meet him?” It
doesn’t much flatter either of them. She says Cohen appeared
“clinically depressed” and was one “mind-altering drugs.” His split-second
decision to spare her life – if that too was not a setup –
probably came with a heavy price tag, but I’m speculating.
To Diana, a free spirit, whose large breasts and tiny waist
made her a magnet for male lust, it was obvious almost from the
beginning that they were incompatible. Not surprising, considering
their first meeting was the result of a criminal rape on the set of a
pornography film, later released under the title “The Nazi and the
Dog.”

Soon after that first, terrifying encounter in Colorado, and
all through their early courtship, she says, he criticized her
wardrobe, consisting mostly of lumberjack shirts and jeans. “Why
did you have to come to me in the body of a slut?” he complained
in between hints that he was soon headed to London to meet the
Queen. He suggested she enroll in charm school, so she could
accompany him to Buckingham Palace. This was in the autumn of
1979, when he was preparing for the Field Commander Cohen
Tour which ended three months later in mid-December on a rainy
morning in London where he checked into a posh hotel, a stone’s
throw from Marble Arch and the headquarters of the Royal Family.
I know, because I was there.

The following evening, December 20, 1979, discredited DJ
and notorious pedophile Jimmy Savile was in London, hosting Top
of the Pops. Even back then Savile moved in elite circles, and often
spent Christmas with then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and
her husband. It was a little late to introduce the ageing folksinger to
his teenaged audience, but did this close friend of Prince Philip and
the Queen play a role in connecting Leonard, who was already
acquainted with the Rothschild family, to the Windsors and Prince
Charles, who would invite him to perform at the Prince’s Concert
in 1988?

Meanwhile, he stayed in touch with Diana, who lived
nomadically, a traveling Muse, moving to Oakland, then to the
Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, where she became involved
with other stars, notably Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. Leonard
wrote the songs that would characterize his neo-conservative
Middle Period, culminating in I’m Your Man – the album he would
dedicate to D.I. – Dominique Isserman – in 1988. Although Diana
had made it clear he was not Her Man, she believes many of these
songs were written for her. As proof she claims she mailed him a
money [sic; should read monkey] and plywood violin, for which he thanked her sarcastically in
First We Take Manhattan.

Diana recalls a bizarre showdown on the west coast, where
Leonard brought Isserman and an older woman friend to confront
Diana, once and for all, in what must have been a humiliating scene
for all concerned. Leonard was paralyzed by ambivalence while
Isserman was getting impatient for commitment. “What do you
have that I don’t have?” she demanded in her charmingly French-accented
English. Diama, who speaks no French, was embarrassed
at this breach of feminist protocol. Bowing out of their ten-year
romance, she told them all to go away. Dominique Isserman
emerged victorious becoming Leonard’s public love interest, only to
break off the relationship a short time later.

The absurd saga of Leonard’s reluctant Muse does not end
there, either. Seventeen years later, when he was in his seventies and
had allegedly lost all his money to a plundering personal assistant,
Leonard Cohen came calling again. This time showed up in a
camper which he parked at a homeless people’s camp where Diana
was living in a tent. He had driven up from Los Angeles in a lastditch
attempt to win her heart. Well into her fifties by then, and
suffering from post-traumatic stress accumulated over a lifetime of
abuse, she had long given up hope of ever collecting on the house
he promised her back in Denver during the fateful summer of 79.
By now “their song,” Hallelujah, was a massive success, a manic depressive
hymn sung at funerals, weddings, and on American Idol
-- the most over-covered song of the decade. Leonard by now was a
grizzled shadow of himself, chain-smoking iin the park all day and
looking “just like an old bum.” For the last time, he abjectly
proposed, and true to form the principled feminist, now a seasoned
street person, once more gave him “da boot.”

Here her story takes a final, bewildering twist. Faced with
the ultimate rejection, the desperate singer went down on both
knees and pleaded for mercy and understanding. In a fruitless
attempt either to gain her sympathy, or to shock some sense into
her, he uttered this astonishing confession: “I shot John Lennon
because of what he did to you.”

The heavens failed to open, however. La Belle Dame sans
Merci withdrew to her tent, and her knight-at-arms went back to his
camper and drove to LA.

....

It sounds as if the Hollywood Cult had plans for Leonard
Cohen. Like Hunter S. Thompson, who allegedly made snuff films
to finance his career as a writer of gonzo journalistic exposés,
sometimes a man has no choice – or rather, he must choose
between carrot and stick. In Thompson’s case, his choices ended in
sudden death by “suicide” just as he was preparing to expose the
pedophile ring that runs America.

...

Who set up the shoot? Barrie Wexler had just produced a
successful soft-porn film (In Praise of Older Women, -- the “older
women” were, ironically, also about 30, Diana’s age). Four years
later in 1983 he would produce I Am a Hotel – a glorified rock video
featuring performances by an iconic Canadian ballerina and a
famous figure skater –on an endlessly repeating theme of sex and
loneliness. Awful to warch, the film makes it seem Wexler and coproducer
Moses Znaimer decided to declare Cohen officially dead
by shackling him to this albatross.

Wexler and Cohen later fell out, according to Leonard’s exmanager
Kelley Lynch, who also claims to have been disturbed by
her former employer’s interest in violent pornography. She is not
the only one to notice that. With enough cocaine in him, I can
imagine Leonard agreeing to make a porn film to finance his
upcoming tour. The gun might have been a prop that escalated into
a life-or-death proposition. Such a scene would be hard to stop
once in motion.

....

Over the years, Leonard Cohen has made a number of
public comments about wealthy rock stars who called for
revolution. In 1974, he remarked that he hoped Lennon lived long
enough to become an “elder.”

What had Lennon done to Diana that could explain the
alleged statement made to her in a campground where she and
Leonard met for the last time.

Primal Scream Therapy, one of the “self-centred therapies”
that sprang up in the 70s – had, according to Yoko One, helped
John deal with childhood trauma and his own history of violence
against women. Diana was following his advice and example in
moving to Denver to do primal therapy with a therapist John
recommended. She says she’d come to know John and Yoko quite
well, in California, after she wrote John a letter sometime in the
early 70s. He’d liked it so much, he’d asked to meet her in person.
Diana, then in her 20s, was not yet at the make-or-break age of 30
when women like her are often suicided.

Perhaps it makes a kind of sense to blame John Lennon and
Primal Scream Therapy for bringing Diana to Denver and starting a
process that could unravel her mind control programming – which
she claims to have had as a child. But deprogramming could also
expose her to danger. Later, she says, he complained: “Why did you
have to come to me in the body of a slut?” In time male fantasy,
women must be Goddesses or Whores, a dichotomy few ever
manage to straddle.

When his own programming broke down a decade later,
manifesting as anxiety and agoraphobia, Leonard would avoid
therapy like the plague, instead choosing what he knew best:
psychotropic drugs and a tune-up from the very institution that had
programmed him in the 1950s.

Leaving Leonard, but remaining his Muse, Diana would
continue her path, meeting others in the Hollywood circle: Joni
Mitchell, Neil Young, Lily Tomlin. The whole scene is Satanic, she
insists. Maybe Leonard didn’t know that, back in the summer of
1979. Maybe he was as much in shock as anyone who finds himself
on the set of a snuff movie. Hallelujah is about the irony of
encountering God or the Devil, or both in a single night. It’s the
elaboration of one of Sabbatai Zvi’s core kabbalistic beliefs: that
great good can come out of committing evil acts.

Extreme irony can act like a paralyzing drug in a world of
absolute negation, and Leonard knew how to balance dark and light
to maintain control. Poetry and song-writing were realms where
truth was attainable. And there were drugs and women that needed
buying. Bird on a wire is a nicer image than rat in a maze and
almost as accurate.
It is a lot easier to fool people than show them how they have been fooled.

This reminds me of the Phil Ochs / John Train conversion.

Phil Ochs was a politically topical folk singer who helped organize the protests at the 1968 Chicago Democratic protests.

After the protests, his personal life and career faltered.

He assumed the persona of a John Train and said he was a CIA operative.

His life turned to mental illness and alcoholism and he hung himself several years later while he was still in his 30s.

Sad.

Re: Leonard Cohen, Operative? (Ann Diamond material)

Postby guruilla » Fri Aug 28, 2015 2:21 pm

There's quite a bit more to uncover around this than I first realized, for those interested

see for example Ann Diamond Article Corrected by KL [Kelly Lynch, Cohen's ex-manager] - Leonard Cohen Criminal Cover Up here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/57415959/Ann- ... l-Cover-Up

(It's a long convoluted piece full of legalese and fine details; allegedly it was written for Rolling Stone but seems it was never published, apparently because Cohen's lawyers threatened action.)

Then there's this Diamond review of the Cohen bio I'm Your Man from The Toronto Quaterly. Mostly the same info but it seems more credible for appearing in what looks like a published journal as compared to a personal blog where anything goes. However, I couldn't find much info about TQ (no Wiki page) so it may also just be a privately run blog....?

Let's begin with his McGill undergraduate days, when he came close to flunking out with a 56.4 grade average at graduation. "He did much better in math" though, -- yes, perhaps because Leonard was infinitely more calculating than his naive schoolmates who actually studied. At age 17, he began supplementing his income by volunteering for Donald Hebb's notorious, CIA-funded, sensory isolation experiments, for which he got paid a lucrative $20/day. These led to days and weeks spent in flotation tanks on LSD. It's a miracle he managed to remain sane enough to write poetry -- but then, the CIA has long had a soft spot for poets and writers. They often make great spies.

Even in high school, Leonard had shown a tendency to embrace violence. His first short story, published in the Westmount HS yearbook, was titled "Kill or Be Killed."

At least Simmons asks the obvious question -- "How did Leonard get away with it?" -- while glossing over the answers. How does a 21-year-old McGill Law School dropout with barely passing grades get into graduate school at Columbia? Simmons admits "Enrolling at Columbia had really been a cover, something to keep Leonard's family happy."

Cohen’s friend Mort Rosengarten told Simmons that wealthy Montreal Jewish families did not want their sons becoming artists and intellectuals -- rather they were expected to enter the family business and churn out elegant suits and ties for the elite. While rebelliously "floundering" in New York, Leonard founded a literary magazine called The Phoenix -- a perfect way to get close to the Greenwich Village poetry scene and its beatniks who ignored his formal, McGill-influenced verse.

Anyone who knows Leonard knows he's a sharp and disciplined thinker, not the kind of unfocussed dreamer who would imagine he could make a living off poetry. How did he survive in New York as he moved from failure to failure? That's the question that never seems to get answered.

We do know that in 1959 he moved to London to work on a novel. During that time, he met Jacob Rothschild -- heir to a banking empire -- who suggested Leonard visit his mother, Barbara Hutchison, on Hydra. Barbara Hutchison had divorced Jacob's father, and was planning to marry the painter Nikos Ghikas, who had a mansion overlooking the village of Kamini. Simmons doesn't say more about that visit, which found its way into Hydra legend. Following in Henry Miller's footsteps, Leonard knocked on Ghikas' door but, unlike Miller, who was welcomed, he was told to go away. As Leonard told it later to friends on Hydra, he shook his fist and shouted "Curse this house!" Soon after, the mansion burned to the ground and remains a spooky ruin to this day.

Maybe the Rothschild’s had a bone to pick with Ghikas over Barbara's desertion? Maybe Leonard was their messenger? Simmons does not go there. She repeats the official story of how Leonard met Marianne and settled down on Hydra, in an expatriate community of artists that included Marianne's husband, Norwegian novelist Axel Jensen and Australian writers George and Charmian Johnston. (Late in 1959, Hydra's artists somehow figured in a photo-spread in LIFE magazine -- which Simmons doesn't mention, perhaps because the LIFE article was not only precious and tacky, it raises the question of why an obscure Canadian folksinger would appear in so many painfully posed photos depicting Bohemian life on a Greek island.)

LIFE magazine was a flagship of the CIA "MOCKINGBIRD" program -- but that's a conspiracy theory so let's move on. Next we come to the famous Cuban Missile Crisis adventure. This story gets more absurd with each repetition. Simmons delivers the standard version of how Leonard returned to Montreal in the fall of 1960, broke and separated from the woman and child he planned to support with the proceeds of his talent. After co-writing two unsuccessful TV scripts with Irving Layton, he learned his first novel had been rejected by McClelland and Stewart. On March 30, when he would normally have been going over the galleys for The Spicebox of Earth, and looking for paying work, the cash-strapped Leonard suddenly boarded a plane in Miami and flew to Cuba, just days ahead of the Bay of Pigs invasion.

That Miles Mathis suggested that Leonard Cohen may have written Dylan's early work as part of Operation Rolling Stone:

"This leads us to a curious quote from Ginsberg, who is famous for saying too much:
Dylan blew everybody’s mind, except Leonard’s.
Hmm. What could that mean? Is Ginsberg admitting something there?"

http://mileswmathis.com/dylan.pdf

Illuminati News may be an anti-Semitic site and has an articles entitled, "The Jewish Control Over the Entertainment Industries".

"Folk Music in the 60's

Moving to the Folk Music era of the 1960s, we see that this too was totally Jew dominated. Israel Young ran the Folklore Center in New York's Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Fred Weintraub owned the well-known Bitter End nightclub. Manny Roth ran Cafe Wha?. Among the prominent Jewish folksingers of the era were Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Jack Elliott, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary), David Blue (Cohen), and two (Fred Hellerman and Ronnie Gilbert) of the four Weavers. Ballad singer Leonard Cohen had a grandfather who was the first president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Moe Asch (whose father, Sholem, was "the most widely read Yiddish writer of the twentieth century") [GOLDSMITH, P., p. 1] headed Folkway Records, the label that released recordings by Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger (manager: Harold Levanthal), Doc Watson, Black blues artist Leadbelly, Josh White, Black poet Langston Hughes, and ethnic performers from around the world. (Woody Guthrie's wife, Marjorie Gleenblatt Mazia, was Jewish, and their child, Cathy Ann, was "raised as a Jew." [POLLAK, O, p. 12])"

Leonard Cohen's grandfather was Lyon Cohen, founding president of the Canadian Jewish Congress.

I have become much more aware of the Leonard Cohen backstory because of this thread. The most attention I ever paid to the guy is we studied Suzanne and some of his other song lyrics in an English class when I was a sophomore in high school 1968.

There are many dots here but from socially questionable sources but many dots ....

I believe the general population is propagandized and groomed. I believe that MKULTRA and COINTEPRO are real and understated in enduring social impact. I believe that since WWII the CIA (and other agencies) are imbedded deep in our social fabric.

The question to me is only what is real and what is fog, recognizing that fog and confusing and demonizing are part of the science of influence.

Leonard Cohen's success and place in his field was t least in part because of his privileged background I am convinced.

Re: Leonard Cohen, Operative? (Ann Diamond material)

Postby The Consul » Fri Aug 28, 2015 5:31 pm

While unscrewing the electric plate cover in my painter friend’s apartment (Go ahead, fix the fucking light, we still won’t be able to see anything) I had a flashback from viewing the back of John Astin’s head post surgery in the movie “Candy”. Inside was a roll of ticker tape type material, including phrases in red ink from songs by L. Cohen, the prose of Beatnik Poet Diane Di Prima & a quote attributed to Appolonius of Tyana. My friend used to say not to worry, said he was under control. Total control. I didn’t bother asking him about the message in the wall because there was a chance, however small, that he did not put it there. He said the path to success was crosstops and crossroads and being a pincushion for psychic experimentation. For some people it is impossible to lead a normal life, to them there is no such thing and it only exists when it comes into focus as the only identifiable thing they are desperate to escape. Can you make a big enough splash that anyone will bother having you marginalized? Still he disappeared for about 4 years and only surfaced again after one morning sleeping in his “shrine” car he was awakened by “John McCain’s people”. And he’s been a ward of the VA ever since and travels the west. My theory is they knew he was predisposed for whatever it is they had going on up there in Alaska with those Coast Guard boys. Leonard Cohen, Krist Kristopherson, Richard Farina, he would say, yeah amazing, but they’re all on the same prescription. You don’t even have to watch the television anymore the computers and laptops and muzak in the stores all emanate the wavelength. They really do pick people out. At parties. Over there, by the wetbar next to the pool. No, the one with the curly hair. Let’s do him/her. And so the retreats are necessary. The cleansing. The losing all. As he says, once the boomers are out of the way it’s a done deal. Like HE said, I have seen the future of rock and roll and it is not Leonard Cohen.

PufPuf93 » Wed Aug 26, 2015 5:35 pm wrote:This reminds me of the Phil Ochs / John Train conversion.

Sad.

Phil Ochs’ public persona abruptly changed. Using the name John Butler Train, Ochs proclaimed himself to be a CIA operative and presented himself as a belligerent, right-wing thug. He told an interviewer that, “on the first day of summer 1975, Phil Ochs was murdered in the Chelsea Hotel by John Train … For the good of societies, public and secret, he needed to be gotten rid of.”

http://whale.to/b/phil_ochs.html

And then this:

Ochs also claimed knowledge of a plot to kill the president before it happened, and according to his college room mate and best man Jim Glover, Ochs was a witness to the assassination as “a national security observer” at Dealey Plaza.

....

An unofficial internet profile of Ochs notes that he was, “Born in El Paso, Texas on December 19, 1940, Phil and his family moved frequently during the first few years of his life. His father, Dr. Jacob Ochs, had been drafted by the US Army and assigned to various military hospitals in New York, New Mexico and Texas. In 1943, Dr. Ochs was shipped overseas, returning two years later with a medical discharge. Upon his return, he was immediately institutionalized and didn’t return to his family for another two years. During that time, he was subjected to every ‘treatment’ imaginable, including electroshock ‘therapy.’ When he finally returned to his family in 1947 he was but a shell of his former self, described by Phil’s sister as “almost like a phantom.” Beginning in the fall of 1956, Phil Ochs began attending Staunton Military Academy, the very same institution that future ‘serial killer’/cult leader Gary Heidnik would attend…. During Phil’s two years there, a friend and fellow band member was found swinging from the end of a rope (…ruled a suicide). Following graduation, Phil enrolled at Ohio State University, but not before, oddly enough, having a little plastic surgery done to alter his appearance (doing such things, needless to say, was rather uncommon in 1958)…”

...

In summary, Phil Ochs, after graduating from an elite Virginia military academy, served as a sergeant in the Air Force ROTC at Ohio State University, where he spied on campus radicals and was encouraged to infiltrate student protest groups. He may have switched ideological sides, but appears to have maintained his association with the US military intelligence officers that he worked with in college. They must have took note of the fact that one of their ROTC cadets was playing guitar, writing protest songs and articles and fermenting unrest, which was becoming something of a popular campus pastime and cultural phenomenon, one they certainly would have wanted to keep tabs on.

...

In looking through the published literature on Bob Dylan, there is frequent mention of his association with Phil Ochs, such as when Dylan biographer Bob Spitz writes, “Phil Ochs stumbled over to Dylan’s table, worked up over some secret government conspiracy or another.”

...

According to his biographer: “Dylan was on his way uptown to [his and Och’s manager Albert] Grossman’s office on the afternoon of Friday, November 22, 1963, when John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas. ‘I watched it at my manager’s office,’ Dylan later told me. ‘

...

a couple of weeks after Kennedy’s death, Dylan gave a disastrous speech that indicated how much the assassination had troubled him. He went to the grand ballroom of the Hotel Americana in New York to accept the Tom Paine Award of the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee for his work in the civil rights campaigns….”

“…Dylan began to think of Kennedy’s murder, which had been deplored by speaker after speaker that night and he said: ‘I’ll stand up and be uncompromisable about it, which I have to be to be honest. I just got to be, as I got to admit that the man who shot President Kennedy - Lee Oswald - I don’t know exactly what he thought he was doing, but I got to admit honestly that I, too - I saw some of myself in him. I don’t think it could have gone that far - I don’t think it could go that far. But I got to stand up and say that I saw things that he felt, in me - not to go that far and shoot…’ Some members of the audience began to boo and his, and Dylan went forward: ‘You can boo, but booing’s got nothing to do with it - it’s uh - I just uh - I’ve got to tell you, man, it’s the Bill of Rights, it’s free speech and….’ Someone broke in and said his time was up and Dylan later claimed the chairman began kicking me under the table, and he finished up by quickly saying he accepted the award in behalf of James Foreman and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and he went off amid boos and some applause, beat it out of there.”

...

Ochs’ FBI file, over 400 pages, indicates that they took Ochs seriously, and considered him a threat, though there seems to be no indication that the FBI knew of his continuing association with the Air Force Intelligence or Air Force Reserves Intelligence. [46]

The question that is especially important - did Phil Ochs maintain his association with the US Air Force intelligence officers who ran the undercover ROTC operations against student radicals when he was in college, and who were they? Who ran Phil Ochs when he was “working undercover” as an infiltration agent? If not the FBI, was it military intelligence or the CIA? [47]

As a witness at Och’s wedding, Bob Dylan’s former girlfriend, Suze Rotolo is a solid link between Phil Ochs and Dylan, whose relationship with Rotolo is best personified by the photo of them walking down 'Positively' Fourth street in Greenwich Village in NY which graced the cover of Dylan’s “Freewheelin’” album. [48]

...

Dave McGowan wrote that shortly after his successful “War is Over” rally in 1975 Ochs,
“began compiling curious lists, with entries that clearly were references to US biological warfare research: ‘shellfish toxin, Fort Dietrich, cobra venom, Chantilly Race Track, hollow silver dollars, New York Cornell Hospital …” and as John Train, McGowan noted, “proclaimed himself to be a CIA operative and presented himself as a belligerent, right-wing thug.” He would be dead within a year.

“It is suggested that Ochs/Train may have indeed been a spy with two personalities – personalities that are at complete odds with one another but personalities that don’t know the other exists. It is important to note that the Ochs family spent time at military bases in his early life and…while Ochs considered himself a leftist, man of the people, he loved American Western films, and the idea of a strong America. He seemed a man torn in two diametrically opposite directions.”

...

So after breaking up with Dylan, Suze took up with Al Maher, who Dylan dedicated his Tom Paine Award. Al is the son of a Houston, Texas industrialist with ties to Hobby Communications and the Zapata Oil corporation

...

THE REAL JOHN TRAIN

In his book “Family of Secrets” Russ Baker details how, in New York in late April 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald’s “best friend” George deMohrenschildt, met withThomas Devine, as CIA operative code named WUBRINY/1, at the offices of John Train, whose investment banking firm oversaw CIA propriety companies. [81]

When Devine ostensibly “retired” from the CIA in 1953 he formed the Zapata Oil company with George H.W. Bush, and when they sold it, Bush went into politics while Devine joined the investment firm of Train, Cabot and Associates, whose primary partner was John Train.

Train is described by Baker as “a longtime enthusiast of foreign intrigues,” who worked for three presidents.

The 1975 CIA memo reads: “Through Mr. Gale Allen…I learned that Mr. George Bush, DCI designate, has prior knowledge of the now terminated project WUBRINY / LPDICTUM which was involved in propriety commercial operations in Europe. He became aware of this project through Mr. Thomas J. Devine, a former CIA Staff Employee and later, oil-wildcatting associate with Mr. Bush. Their joint activities culminated in the establishment of Zapata Oil [sic] which they eventually sold. After the sale of Zapata Oil, Mr. Bush went into politics, and Mr. Devine became a member of the investment firm of Train, Cabot and Associates, New York…The attached memorandum describes the close relationship between Messrs. Devine and Bush in 1967-68 which, according to Mr. Allen, continued while Mr. Bush was our ambassador to the United Nations.”

...

So the real John Train was an investment banker who ran CIA propriety companies, was a co-founder of the Paris Review, and in April of 1963, (when Oswald was shooting at Gen Walker and Ochs was infiltrating the FPCC), Train was associated with both G. W. Bush’s business partner at Zapata - Thomas Devine as well as Oswald’s good friend George deMohrenschildt.

When G.H. Walker Bush and Thomas J. Devine sold their interest in Zapata, Bush got into politics and Devine joined Train’s firm in New York City in whose offices they met in April of 1963, with George deMohrenschildt.

The son of one of the new Zapata investors, John Maher, of Houston, protested the Cuban travel ban in New York and at a Congressional hearing in Washington, and was pals with Bob Dylan, and took his ex-girlfriend to Cuba after the government banned Americans from traveling there.

This is Diamond's piece about Kelley Lynch without KL's additions, makes for a pretty stunning read. Does this sound like someone who unwittingly got embroiled in organized crime ~ or what?

Whatever Happened to Kelley Lynch?

Kelley Lynch is the woman accused in 2005 of skimming millions from singer Leonard Cohen’s retirement fund. I knew of her through friends of Leonard Cohen, and had heard her described in glowing terms as the agent who, singlehandedly, saved Cohen’s career in the 1990s.

In early May of this year, Lynch suddenly contacted me. She said she was mainly interested in my perceptions of Cohen as a former friend and next door neighbour in Montreal. At one time I also studied with his Zen Master in California, and had spent time with him on Hydra, Greece.

Not having heard her side of the story (I doubt that anyone has, apart from a circle of her closest friends), I was curious. Over the next few weeks, she shared several documents pertaining to the case including an affidavit written and signed by her older son, Rutger.

Together, they paint a picture very much at variance from the sketchy media image of Lynch as a reckless, delusional woman on the brink of a career meltdown. Lynch's own timeline also includes disturbing behind-the-scene dealings that suggest she may have been set up to take the blame for Cohen's tax situation.

The following account is based on what Lynch has sent me --

Since 2005 when she became the object of media gossip, little if anything has been heard from Kelley Lynch.

A single mother with two sons, Lynch was Leonard Cohen's personal manager from approximately 1988 to 2004, and was known for her skill, hard work, and dedication. Until 2004, Kelley lived and worked in Los Angeles where she still has many friends and acquaintances in the entertainment world including Phil Spector and Oliver Stone.

Her own account of the events that wrecked her career, varies widely from the media portrait of a reckless, delusional woman in the throes of a personal meltdown. The meltdown was real, however. By late December, 2005, Lynch had lost custody of one son and was homeless and living on the streets with her older son, Rutger, who witnessed the chain of bizarre events that had begun a year earlier.

In 2004, Lynch owned a house in Brentwood, and still worked for Cohen, who owed her money for royalties and other services, but was increasingly involved with his new girlfriend, Anjani Thomas, ex-wife of Cohen’s attorney, Robert Kory.

In retrospect, Lynch believes she was set up by Cohen and his representatives to help cover up a tax situation which made the IRS “nervous.” In September 2004, Cohen’s attorney Weston told Lynch that a financial entity known as Traditional Holdings, LLC could be overturned by the IRS. Lynch, who had been selected as a partner on the entity, became uneasy and consulted a new accountant, who referred her to tax lawyers, who found irregularities in Cohen's tax history, both in the US and Canada where he has residences.

Rattled by what she was hearing – that she was being dragged into criminal tax fraud -- Lynch called the IRS in Washington and also contacted their website. An IRS collection agent advised her to call the Fraud Hotline, which she did.

Told that any further action on her part might implicate her in fraud, Lynch refused to meet with Cohen or turn over the corporate books. At that stage, Cohen’s advisers began claiming that certain payments, distributions, or advances made to her were actually "over-payments." Lynch says their accounting was incomplete and ignored her share of intellectual property, unpaid commissions and royalties, and share in Traditional Holdings, LLC. Apparently Lynch had also been issued K1 partnership tax documents and made a partner on another Cohen investment entity, LC Investments, LLC, without her permission or awareness.

Lynch says an increasingly nervous and desperate Cohen was pressuring her to agree to mediation and told a friend of hers that Lynch was "the love of his life." She and Cohen had had a brief affair in 1990, but Cohen now was offering her 50% of his "community property" as well as "palimony" through lawyer Robert Kory at a meeting attended by Lynch's legal representatives and her accountant, Dale Burgess. To Lynch, none of this made sense at the time.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles District Attorney's office received an anonymous tip informing them that Lynch was a friend of producer Phil Spector, whom Lynch maintains is innocent. Cohen, on the other hand, had given an interview in which he described a gun-waving Spector who threatened him during recording sessions in 1977.

At around the same time he was offering her “millions”, Lynch says, Cohen was also circulating slanderous stories about her. She believes Cohen encouraged Los Angeles record producer Steve Lindsey, the father of her son Ray, to initiate a custody suit – on May 25, 2005, the same day a 25-man SWAT team from the LAPD, acting on a bogus 911 call, suddenly cordoned off her street and surrounded her home in response to a "hostage taking."

Earlier that morning, Lynch says, her 12 year old son Ray woke up not feeling well. She sent an email to his school informing them she was keeping him at home. When the boy's father found out Ray was home he became agitated and abusive over the phone to Lynch.

Lynch says she had young people who worked for her coming and going that day, and did not want Ray’s father coming to the house and attacking her, as he had in the past. She called her older son Rutger, who was visiting a friend nearby, and asked him to pick Ray up and take him down the hill where actress Cloris Leachman waited in her car. Leachman, a friend of Lindsey, took charge of Ray – just as seven LAPD squad cars came speeding up Mandeville Canyon Road in the direction of Lynch’s house. With them was Ray’s father, Steve Lindsey.

Lynch says she looked out the window and saw armed men on her lawn. Her son Rutger and his friends were telling police there was no hostage-taking, that they had spent the morning with Lynch, and that there must be some mistake. For reasons no one understands, LAPD/Inglewood PD decided to believe Steve Lindsey, who had left the scene.

Police later gave varying explanations about what led up to the incident. West LAPD said they responded to a report that someone heard "shots fired." But a company that oversees SWAT said Lynch would have to have a superior caliber weapon to warrant such a high risk entry. A member of the SWAT team claimed to have seen a note that Lynch’s sister had placed the call stating Lynch posed “a danger to herself and everyone around her.” Her sister denies this.

Lynch stayed inside her house and called her former custody lawyer, Lee Kanon Alpert. She also called Leonard Cohen, assuming he had played a role in the events unfolding on her lawn. Lynch says she knew Steve Lindsey had also been meeting with Cohen and his attorney, and had recently told their son Ray that Lynch was “going to jail,” upsetting the boy. She says Cohen taped the phone call later used in his successful court case against her – for which, Lynch says, she never received a summons.

Lynch says, “Police were on my hillside and crouching under my kitchen window.” She says the standoff on her lawn continued for several more hours, disrupting the neighbourhood. Members of Inglewood Police Department also participated in the operation.

Eventually, she decided to go into the back yard. Seeing her son Rutger acting as a “human shield and hostage negotiator,” Lynch ventured out front with her Akita on leash and joked to the cops: "Who am I supposed to be holding hostage? My dog?"

The police responded by telling her son they would only shoot Lynch and her dog if necessary.

“That was when I dove into the pool.”

SWAT team members searched her house. As they entered, Lynch's African Grey parrot, Lou, called out: "I see dead people!" – further alarming the nervous cops.

Offering her a hand out of the pool, one officer said they were only there to help her and not to hurt her.

“No one asked me if I was all right; no one questioned me about my well-being.” The Medical Examiners Office later wondered how the police had evaluated her. After stating they were not arresting her, they handcuffed Lynch, still in her bikini. On her way out the door, her son managed to hand her a brocade jacket.

Although she lived near UCLA Medical Center, she was taken in a squad car to King-Drew Medical Centre in Watts, 40 miles away and a three-hour drive in traffic. Known as one of America’s worst hospitals, King-Drew was recently closed down as a place where patients routinely die from neglect and medical errors. During the long ride through South Central Los Angeles, Lynch says she was questioned closely about her relationship with Phil Spector, who had been charged with first degree murder of Lana Clarkson. In the car, Lynch voiced concern over what awaited her at the hospital but was told by a woman cop: "This will be good for you."

“I felt I was being kidnapped”.

At Emergency, the admitting psychiatrist administered anti-psychotic drugs without authorization and left Lynch in the waiting area for hours, still in her bikini and brocade jacket, and handcuffed to a chair. A nurse advised her she would be transferred – but did not tell her where. Examining her file, the nurse noticed it listed her as 19 years old with wrong social security number, wrong date of birth, wrong religion, and her name misspelled as "Kelly Lynch" Lynch thinks it was the same file she had seen, several months earlier, in the hands of the Special Investigator who came to question her about Spector.

A second doctor told her to wait her turn to ensure no further harm would come to her, and assured her that nothing in the King Drew report could cause her to lose custody of her child. The following day, she was released after nearly 24 hours in the psych ward.

Back home, Lynch learned that while she was being held at the hospital her younger son's father, Steven Clark Lindsey, had filed for custody of her son Ray Charles Lindsey and obtained a restraining order denying her access to the boy. She says Lindsey attempted to convince doctors at King Drew that she was dangerous, in order to have her committed, She says Lindsey also threatened the psychiatrist who had her released.

On that same day, Cohen’s attorney Robert Kory filed a Declaration in the custody matter, as did Betsy Superfon (a friend of Cohen, Kory and Lindsey who had befriended Lynch a few months earlier ). Superfon later told Lynch she didn't realize what she was signing, and that Cohen had offered Lindsey money “or something else” to take Ray away from Lynch.

Her older son alleges Lindsey offered him money to go to Leonard Cohen's lawyer's office and transfer or sign over Lynch’s house to Cohen or his attorney Robert Kory. Rutger refused and phoned his own father, who advised him to contact a lawyer.

Two weeks later, in early June, as she drove down her street to buy dog food, a Mercedes sped out of a neighbouring driveway and rear-ended her car, Lynch was thrown forward, fracturing her nose against the steering well, and was knocked unconscious. Later, she says, as she drove back up the hill to her home, the same driver was standing in his driveway and called out: “We are watching you” as she passed.

Seeing his injured, bleeding mother enter the house, her older son again phoned his father, who may have called 911. Accounts vary as whether the call referred to an incident of "domestic violence" or a "drug overdose." Either way, police arrived at Lynch’s door for the second time in two weeks. Over the protests of her son, they entered while she was on the phone to a friend, Dr. Wendi Knaak who stayed on the phone talking with Rutger while police again handcuffed Lynch. This time they took her to UCLA hospital where her obvious head injuries were ignored. Instead, she was once again drugged and placed in the psychiatric unit where she remained for several days.

Lynch and her advisors maintain these events were coordinated by Cohen, Kory and Lindsey, with the help of former LA District Attorney Ira Reiner in a well- orchestrated plan to traumatize and discredit her – paving the way for media stories which accused her of skimming millions from Cohen’s retirement fund.

In the summer of 2005, as Lynch was struggling to save her home and protect her child from a father her friends describe as "viciously anti-social" and “violent”, reports of Leonard Cohen's financial troubles hit the press. They alleged the 70-something singer had been scammed by his personal manager, Kelley Lynch, who colluded with an advisor at the AGILE Group in Colorado to send him false financial statements while emptying his accounts of millions of dollars.

Although listed as the owner of Traditional Holdings, the entity in question, Lynch says she never received any statements from the AGILE Group -- who instead had been sending them to Cohen -- having changed her mailing address to Cohen's home in Los Angeles. She has since filed a complaint with the US Post Office for mail tampering.

She insists Cohen sued her because she went to the IRS about his tax situation. She says he is not, and never was, "broke" and that missing funds went to buy homes for his son Adam Cohen and girlfriend, singer Anjani Thomas, ex-wife of Robert Kory. Noting Cohen is famous for his financial largesse and once gave Zen Master Sasaki Roshi $500,000 as a gift, Lynch also cites hefty payments to advisers, various transaction fees, personal taxes, and other monies which may have been sent offshore.

While Cohen and Lindsey attempted to persuade others, including LA Superior Court, that she intended to flee to Tibet or another non-extradition country, Lynch was isolated and penniless and still in Los Angeles. Lynch was former personal secretary to the late Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a flamboyant Tibetan spiritual teacher who founded Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado in the 1970s, and died in 1987. She says various Tibetan lamas are praying for her safety.

Journalists covering the story were either unable, or didn't bother, to track Lynch down, and most reported Cohen's statements as fact. The NY Times contacted Kelley for a quote which they never printed

By July 2005, Lynch had lost her custody battle and Ray went to live with his father. On December 28, she and Rutger were evicted from the house in Brentwood, and ended up homeless in Santa Monica, which has no resources for the homeless. The Police Department gave her no help and, she claims, laughed when she brought in evidence that she was being stalked by a known serial killer while she camped on the beach.

In 2006, Cohen was awarded a symbolic $9 million settlement in a civil suit against Lynch, who still does not have a lawyer representing her. Corporate books and other evidence of fraud appear to have been overlooked by Judge Ken Freeman in his judgment, Lynch says, although she admits she has not read the court documents and was never served a summons. At the time of the decision, she told reporters she lacked the money to make a phone call. That same year, her older son lost his fingers in an accident with a meat grinder while he was working at Whole Foods in Los Angeles and Lynch could not afford a bus ticket to visit him in hospital.

Lynch heard through a journalist that Cohen later testified for the District Attorney’s office in a secret grand jury relating to the Phil Spector case with former District Attorney Ira Reiner acting as his lawyer. Reiner is a personal friend of Cohen, and as D.A. presided over some high-profile cases including the “Night Stalker” serial killer and the McMartin Day Care scandal.

Recently, on June 17, 2008, Cohen's lawsuit against the Agile Group was thrown out of court for lack of evidence. In response the AGILE Group dropped its counter-suit accusing Cohen of defamation and fraud. AGILE still claims to be shocked that a singer of Leonard Cohen's talent and stature would engage in false accusations against his own representatives.

Lynch believes Cohen and AGILE colluded to defraud her. She continues to deny all allegations against her, and remains hopeful that Phil Spector's lawyer, Bruce Cutler, will represent her in recouping damages to her livelihood and reputation. She now lives in another state and recently learned her younger son, 15, whom she has not seen since July 2005, stopped attending school last January.

These days Cohen’s fans seem to have expended their rage at Kelley Lynch for driving their idol into bankruptcy. Some now say she unwittingly did them a service -- by forcing him to go on tour for the first time in nearly two decades.

At 74, singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen continues to ride a wave of sympathy, gathering wide support from the music world and even some British royalty. Unquestionably, his career and finances have benefited from news reports that he is too impoverished to retire.

From his tower of song, Cohen has written:

I smile when I'm angry
I cheat and I lie
I do what I have to do
To get by

And I’m always alone
And my heart is like ice
And it’s crowded and cold
In my secret life

My Secret Life. Leonard Cohen

His many admirers need to listen closely.

Interviewers: You were in Havana during the Bay of Pigs fiasco and wrote a poem, "The Only Canadien Tourist in Havana Turns His Thoughts Homeward..." Why did you go down there?

Cohen: I don't know.

Interviewers: You seem to have walked into several revolutions. Greece before the Colonels took over, Ethopia ...

Cohen: Yeah, I've been into a few of those places: I've actually stumbled into my share of revolutions, I guess.

Interviewers: Was it purely coincidental, or ...

Cohen: I guess there might be some unseen hand at work.

In this film, shot in 1964, Cohen says he went to Cuba because of his fascination with violence. "It was kill or be killed." Towards the end he describes himself, "playfully" as a double agent.
