potentially benign explanation

Postby glubglubglub » Thu Oct 06, 2005 12:53 am

see my comment on the post about blogspot/blogger being down. Short version: it's not clear if this is deliberate censorship or simply the first -- and most vocally announced -- visible side effect from a spat between a pair of internet backbone operators.

In any case, it does show how the modern internet is pretty easily divisible, mainly because there are now a collection of a couple dozen major nodes through at least one of which most traffic passes through. Massive deployment of heterogenously owned wireless internet points will eventually return the internet to its basically unkillable mesh configuration, but for now it basically looks like a ring with trees branching off, and thus is (relatively) easy to shutdown into isolated subnets.

Will they shut down the Net?

Postby Inanna » Thu Oct 06, 2005 1:57 am

I'm just wondering. To be honest, I am surprised they've let it go this far, unless they are gathering data on who visits what sites.

Damn, I can't get into Alex Jones' sites either -- yep, Roadrunner here. Now WTF should we do? It's getting bad.

I forwarded this info to RawStory.com in hopes they'll look into it and publish something. This is important and should concern everyone on the internet.

Need a backup

Postby lilorphant » Thu Oct 06, 2005 3:10 am

We all should be thinking contingencies for communications. Lucky me, I was hit by Katrina, and found that communications were the most important thing after water, ice, and food.

If you have AIM, and a cellphone, you should register an account because cellphones could use AIM when actual phone calls from a cellphone would not go through.

Text messages also worked, and calls out of state. I could not make local calls either through old fashioned land lines, or cellphones. Only interstate calls. If you don't have an old fashioned land-line phone get one.

I was able to read RI website through my cellphone, but only in areas that had internet coverage, and not able to post.

I hope everyone takes precautions to have supplies on hand just in case... I have the feeling katrina was a warmup.

As my wife likes to say, "think, plan, do". I've been experiencing attacks of cognitive dissonance (thinking) for the past five years and it seems the evidence is overwhealming that 1984 is upon us.
Now comes the planning phase, hopefully by this time next year we will be able to do...

wrong kind of fragility rdr

Postby glubglubglub » Thu Oct 06, 2005 9:16 am

it's not the 'stuff disappearing' fragility, it's the breakdown of the everyone-can-connect-to-everyone paradigm kind of fragility. much scarier than stuff just disappearing into a memory hole.

what do you expect when

Postby bander » Thu Oct 06, 2005 9:47 am

what do you expect when you give vast power to some individuals? - what did you expect when you gave vast power to some individuals? - that they would turn into saints? - what did you expect when you said to certain individuals: be above the law, do anything you want, be free, have a hammer? - you wanted this, you chose this, you wanted this, you wanted this - to be beaten with a hammer - you knew they would beat you with it when you gave them a hammer - enjoy it then - you wanted it - dont be a hypocrite now - you knew they would beat you, you wanted that - you chose to allow individuals to have vast, supralegal power - you allowed it, you didnt oppose it, you didnt say a word against it - you knew they wouldnt turn into saints - you allowed it, you chose it, you wanted it - enjoy it - 'give me slavery or give me death' - that's your motto - you had no examples of vast kindness with vast power - you had millions of examples of vast cruelty with vast power - you knew this would happen - you want it - enjoy it -

Anyone have a link to a news story or other discussion forum talking about this?

I've been scouring the internet this morning but I have limited time right now -- nothing to be found. But, I still cannot access the Alex Jones sites (using Roadrunner). There are other alternatives for internet access here so I'm tempted to complain to Time-Warner and then switch to DSL or another non-censored carrier (while they still exist).

But, I'd like to verify that this story is indeed true. Right now, this discussion page is the only place I've found.

Public proxies people...learn how to configure your Opera, Netscape or (*gasp*) IE browsers to use these proxies. They come and go and have various speeds. Check the sites below frequently for new/fastest proxies. Some of them are benchmarked daily. They cannot block all of these proxies. Spread the word.

www.publicproxyservers.com/index.html
tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/

Maybe we're jumping the gun here. It's not only Roadrunner, but my work connection as well. It would appear to me that the DNS entries for his sites got dropped. That shouldn't happen, but it could happen, by accident. If anyone knows the IP address for his sites, it should still be possible to access them that way.

Edited by: nomo at: 10/6/05 10:05 am
