Things/Behaviors You Don't See Anymore

Postby 82_28 » Thu Aug 25, 2016 5:36 am

This is just about shit that you were taught or caught onto a long time ago. I find it fascinating and have been thinking about it quite a bit recently.

Auto mechanics.

Hair stylists who smoked while they cut your hair at JCPenney.

Woolworth's lunch counter.

Being able to come and go from your old school to say hi to teachers.

Walk your friends or family to their gate in an airport.

Honk your horn when both picking someone up or making sure they got inside okay when you dropped them off.

Jump roping outside of training for ultra-violence.

Go on cats! Discuss!
There is no me. There is no you. There is all. There is no you. There is no me. And that is all. A profound acceptance of an enormous pageantry. A haunting certainty that the unifying principle of this universe is love. -- Propagandhi

The thrill of buying an album in a record store
Dating a work colleague
Being able to watch any news as if it was a factual "White Hat" presentation of information
Leaders of stature and integrity like MLK or Mandela
Friendly and civil disagreements online
Going to the library to research

Doing business with just a handshake, because your word meant something and integrity was important.

Roaming all over your entire neighborhood and beyond without worrying about being accosted/abducted/parent turned in by neighbors.

Getting to know your neighbors.

A starry night.

Home gardens.

Modest new homes.

Staying at one job until retirement and not getting screwed out of your pension.
Don't believe anything they say.
And at the same time,
Don't believe that they say anything without a reason.

Allow me to unburden you. It is not politically incorrect to say "Men smoking pipes".

I must be old fashioned.

  • I just had an appointment with a researcher at the main branch of our library last month! It was the last day of DNC protests but it was raining so I didn't miss much and got a lot done.
  • There's an autobody shop like a block from me so I see mechanics all the time. Plus, not one, not two, but three friends own motorcycle repair garages here.
  • Tons of mom and pop stores here. Maybe not tons but more here than when I travel.
  • I'm a vinyl hound and actually buy new music to listen to (well, my last purchase was a reissue of Nas "Illmatic" from '94 but it's definitely for listening).
  • I just went on vacation two weeks ago and the view of the Milky Way was insane, probably the best I've ever seen. It was early for the Pleiades but they were out in full force.

I do miss that Woolworth lunch counter, which ended when I was very young. I can still remember exactly what a hot dog tasted like.

I was just lamenting the fact that I can't get a good tex-mex / gringo / San Diego-style burrito anymore from somewhere that's not a chain. Everything's super healthy, authentic, or crap.

Kids being obsessed about a movie for years at a time . . .

When I was a kid in the 80's and early 90's, Star Wars and Indiana Jones were always a go to reference. For years. Goonies? For years. Terminator 2? For years!

Big movies these days seem over-hyped and are forgotten as quickly as they arrive, with only a few exceptions.

On a theme of Concerts and Performances:

Concerts/shows that people actually arrive to be seated before the performance starts, not "fashionably late".

Concerts where people actually SIT in their assigned seats, and don't stand and block those who wish to or need to sit, often for THE ENTIRE SHOW! (I mean, really people! OK, you are excited to see your favorite artist, especially at the beginning of the show... so stand up for the first song, then SIT YOUR ASS DOWN). :mad2

People being quiet and listening to a performance, not talking to their companions as if they are in their own living rooms. In other words, thoughtfulness of those around you and the artist who is performing. We really don't want to hear about all YOUR drama. :whisper:

Concerts where people actually watch and listen to the show. Now days, I see many people who (often STANDING) are spending the ENTIRE SHOW holding up a cell phone and recording. It seems they are missing what a live concert is all about! I would like to know the number of times someone is re-watching the hour long or more performance they recorded, as they watched it through a small screen.

People flicking their zippo lighters and holding overhead to show appreciation for a song. Lighters are now replaced with glowing phone screens, some of which have an app that is..... a depiction of a zippo lighter!

Joints being smoked at indoor concerts and just "passed down the line" (very 70's, I know!)

I watched Colbert last night and he did some bit with a dot matrix print out -- I even don't remember the topic other than it was about trump. I was like where the hell did they source the printer and the paper?

VHS tapes.

Video rental stores.

Bookstores.

Non electrified fly swatters.

New cars with standard transmissions.

Cigarette machines where you pulled that weird handle and the pack would drop out.

Buffets that had a live piano player to entertain.

Arcades in every mall.

Car "bras".

Porch swings.

Tetherball and four square.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet: Hitch hiking and hitch hikers.

Come to Vermontistan, I pick up several every week. A few are becoming regulars.
