Computer networks

Postby chillin » Thu Dec 08, 2005 1:17 pm

Networks are fairly complicated systems, it's not unusual for sites to seem to disappear for some users on occasion.

For example I could be in Miami trying to connect to the local newpaper's site... the computer traffic involved in that could be routed through 4 or 5 different networks that span international borders even though it seems like a 'local call'. Any type of computer problem on any one of those networks could make the local newspaper site seem to be unavailable until the problem was resolved or the network finds a different route to newspaper site.

Maybe it is something spooky, but its far more likely that its some benign computer glitch somewhere. In closing I'd like share the system admins' golden rule: If anything weird happens, rebooting will probably fix it. (save your work first pls)

Blogger's been having big technical problems lately

Postby kornholio » Thu Dec 08, 2005 1:43 pm

One night earlier this week I got the same 404 error while trying to look at rigorousintuition.blogspot.com.

My first thoughts were "gasp - they shut down RI" or "gasp - Jeff shut it down," but I quickly saw that it was doing this for all Blogspot blogs -- Atrios, sports blogs, my friends' personal blogs, etc.

I've read elsewhere that in the last couple weeks there's been an explosion of spam blogs or "splogs" hosted on Blogspot. Perhaps the technical problems have to do with the strain on the system associated with thousands of spam blog posts. Perhaps it has to do with Blogspot engineers trying to delete splogs.

Anyway, I think the 404 errors are just technical SNAFUs, nothing sinister.

Postby Et in Arcadia ego » Thu Dec 08, 2005 3:11 pm

I had difficulty for several hours accessing the blog the evening of the Moon post.

I've had a good degree the last week of intermitent disconnects on my cable modem that I didn't attribute to much more thna tech difficulties, even though I never experienced them before.

What bugged me the most was one night I wanted to post a comment on the blog, and the thing where you enter the charaters to block out bots failed to function; I kept repeatedly entering the correct letters displayed(which were very easy to read), and kept getting failed. It bugged me enough that I was going to screenshot the page to Jeff, but when I cam home I was able to post again without problems.

The funnything about it though, was that I actually rebooted/logged back on in an attempt to get a new sequence of letters to display, and those same ones were there again..

Re: hotmail retrograde

Postby Gouda » Thu Dec 08, 2005 7:03 pm

Normally, I do not fret much about these things, but now that we're talkin'...

I just sent an email to a friend in Italy describing the Mel Sembler story, including the link to Jeff's post today. The email was sent, but when i went back to the inbox after I'd sent it, the whole thing was empty (and there were some 70 email stored there). I refreshed. Then I got the old: "Account Temporarily Unavailable". Haven't been able to get back into hotmail since. (15 minutes ago, this).

I just refreshed the page again, and got this: "The server closed the connection while reading the response. Contact your system administrator." huh?

I hope this is a coincidence. Probably is. Server just went down. Would have gone down if I had sent an e-greeting to my sister.

I just sent an email about Chikao Fujisawa and George O'Toole to a friend, and had the same problem. Maybe hotmail is having server issues. I hope it's just that.

Some fantastic and interesting responses to this thread

Technically, obvoiusly there are a veritable plethora of different reasons that I could have been the experiencing problems that kicked this off, [Illuminaughty, Banned and Illorphant's experiences were probably closest to mine] ... but
I wasn't having ANY problems accessing ANY other Blogs on the Blogspot/google servers or anywhere else, or ANY other pages on the web! Wrong about the R.I. board/blogger system problems and outtages being 'spooks', giving themselves, and their methods away in monitoring our little community here.

I did think at first that THEY had totally REMOVED Jeff and our whole existence from the web;
p216.ezboard.com/frigorou...2244.topic

This being one of the few genuinely dynamic/organic 'free thinkers' forums with any perceivable rational intelligence around, It didn't surprise me @ all, just unexpectedly saddened/maddened me into kicking off this thread.

But anyway I was wrong ...apparently.

Check this link for synchronicity with Jeff's own posting :
rigorousintuition.blogspo...t-two.html

The SAME EVENING was when I was having the problems outlined in my original post, recapped on link 1 above.

Was it the equivalent of Jeff's weird phone noises/odd car activity? Blogspot is now owned by Google. That can't be good.

Personally, I use Linux as my operating system and Firefox as my browser, so VERY few viruses out there that could even affect my system. I do sacrifice the ability to easily look at some multimedia content on the web. Quicktime and Windows Media files are proprietary (companies won't share the code.) There are ways around it, but they don't make ALL the media work.

Other than that, no virus scans, no spyware scans, no defragging....nice!

The next release of the version of Linux I use, Ubuntu, should be out in about four months and it is supposed to be so user friendly it can compete with the new Windows OS. You might want to check it out.

Oh yeah, and in Linux, all the software is free.

www.ubuntulinux.org/

It's also possible to dual boot, so that you can use Windows when you have to (I have to for my scanner).

There are free Linux programs that handle just about everything that you can do on Windows...office utilities, photoshop type program, etc.

But if you are a hardcore computer gamer...nevermind. SOME games will work, but many of them require the use of proprietary programs that only function in Windows or with great effort in Linux.

But this post, I'm happy to say, is 100% Windows free!
