Don't Look Now = Eyes Wide Shut?!?

Postby IanEye » Tue Jan 17, 2006 10:33 pm

Hello, I have been enjoying reading RI for the past couple of months and really enjoyed reading the "Eyes Wide Shut" thread. So I thought I'd add my two cents:

A few years back [2002?] I attended a Double Feature DVD party with some friends where the bill was Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and Roeg's Don't Look Now. The host said he liked how the titles complimented each other and that they were both about troubled relationships. Great date movies!

I came away from the visual feast struck by how the movies both used the colors red and blue to great effect.

Anyway, after reading the Kubrick thread here I came away with something else, DLN takes place in Venice and EWS has it's own Venice connection with the masks used at the "party" scene.

There are other interesting similarities as well [like the dvd's box covers for one thing]. There is no great conspiracy here, but Roeg is a director that RI readers will find interesting if they haven't seen any of his movies. I also recommend "Performance", which covers a lot of ground well-trod here, identity switching, metamorphasis, rituals......

Thanks for reading!

Don't look Now

Postby heyjt » Wed Jan 18, 2006 2:31 am

Was that the one with Donald Sutherland?
I saw it years ago, he was a antique painting specialist and there was witchcraft involved?
Have to think about the issues in that flick...

EWS and DLN

Postby sunny » Wed Jan 18, 2006 3:03 am

DLN was a novel by Daphne DuMaurier, no? That book really scared me as a kid; the movie didn't really have as much "atmosphere" after having read it.I'll have to revisit the film and reconsider.

Nice double bill, there! Lots of resonances between the movies. The main difference, for me, is that DLN is soaked in emotion, and EWS deliberately free of it. EWS was purported to be "about" relationships, and DLN is about relationships.

yeah, that is a cool double bill. I loved Don't Look Now....you mentioned the colors red and blue being used to great effect....italian horror director Dario Argento did that a lot too....but his blues and reds were more like day-glo blues and neon pinks....like trippy versions of the reds and blues that EWS and DLN used.

I guess why I think it is such an intriguing double feature for RI readers is that EWS deals with how Humans control other Humans and DLN deals with how Humans are controlled by "Other" forces at times.

Both movies overall impact were overshadowed at the times of their release by hype concerning the controversial love scenes featuring the leading couples. [Crazy wig that Mr. Sutherland wears too ]
