Russian company minting "In Trump we trust" coins

A Russian metal working company has minted a sterling silver coin to commemorate President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, featuring Mr. Trump’s face and the slogan “In Trump we trust.”

The Associated Press Television News interviewed the man in charge of the company, who said the limited edition of 45 coins were designed to express his and other Russian business leaders’ “hopes associated with Trump.”

Vladimir Vasyukhin, director of the “Art-Grani” company about 650 miles east of Moscow, in south-central Russia’s Chelyabinsk region, told APTN, “there are more hopes associated with Trump with regards to the lifting of sanctions; maybe the environment (between the U.S. and Russia) will change.”

That hope that Mr. Trump might usher in an era of improved U.S.-Russian relations is one that both the incoming American leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin have expressed themselves.

Mr. Trump even suggested in an interview with the Times of London several days ago that he might be willing to drop some of the sanctions against Moscow in exchange for an agreement on nuclear arms reduction. Moscow’s reaction to the proposal was muted, and on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he didn’t actually see it as a proposalfrom the incoming president.

All but five of the commemorative coins will be cast in silver, with the others in gold. They measure almost five inches in diameter and weigh about two pounds each, similar to coins made by the company featuring Putin and other notable Russians.

One side of the coins feature an image of Mr. Trump’s face, while the other shows the Statue of Liberty and has an inscription of the “In Trump we trust” slogan.

APTN reports that Art-Grani is keen to present the first of the coins to Mr. Trump, and they’ve reached out to Russian diplomats and business partners in the U.S. to help arrange the presentation.

Vasyukhin said the silver coins would cost a “few thousand dollars,” but the specific price has yet to be decided.

New Poll Shows Trump Fans Are Almost All White-Wingers: 4 Fascinating Findings
A new survey finds most Americans think Donald Trump is unqualified to be president.
By Kali Holloway / AlterNet January 17, 2017

Most of the attention given to a new Washington Post/ABC News poll has centered on the finding that Donald Trump will take office as the most unliked president of the last four decades, making him historically unpopular. The survey finds 54 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of Trump, while 40 percent view him favorably. Just a day earlier, Gallup released almost identical numbers, with Trump’s unfavorable/favorable split at 55/40. Compared to Gallup’s November numbers, Trump’s favorables are on the decline since his election. CNN also found that Trump’s numbers have dropped by 6 points since he beat Hillary Clinton in November and that his favorables are less than half those of incoming President Obama, which stood at 84 percent at around this time in 2009.

Trump responded to the polls in the most Trumpian way possible, by re-whining the story of how the system is rigged against the racist, misogynist, white male, trust fund kid-turned-adult billionaire who, despite no previous experience in government or the military and a lack of coherent policy proposals, was elected president. “The same people who did the phony election polls, and were so wrong, are now doing approval rating polls,” Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. “They are rigged just like before.”

It’s unlikely Trump has really dug into the numbers, which show it’s not just about popularity. Americans overwhelmingly think poorly of Trump on a whole host of issues. Here are four interesting findings from the Washington Post/ABC Survey.

1. White people are the only group that have a favorable view of Trump at anything near 50 percent.

Trump spent the long Martin Luther King weekend tweeting racialized insults at civil rights icon John Lewis, who was marching and getting mercilessly beaten by racist cops back when Trump was racking up Vietnam war deferments because his feet hurt until the moment the war ended. That was fully in character with the guy whose entire presidential run was launched by assuming the role of birther-in-chief, and who spent 18 months co-signing his angry followers’ ludicrous belief that Muslims, blacks and immigrants are stealing a country that rightfully belongs to them. It follows that just 17 percent of African Americans, 24 percent of Hispanics and 21 percent non-whites polled overall rated Trump favorably. In contrast, a whole 50 percent of whites think Trump is pretty cool.
Image

2. Most Americans think Trump is unqualified to be president.

Fifty-two percent of respondents to the WaPo-ABC poll responded in the negative to the question, “Do you think Donald Trump is qualified to serve as president, or not?” As with a lot of the questions, divides are most glaringly observed along lines of party affiliation, race and class. A whopping 90 percent of conservative Republicans said they think Trump is fully prepared to take on the task ahead of him, which only proves their ability to overlook every egregious failing a president can have unless he (and yes, emphasis on “he”) is black. Just 21 percent of Democrats agreed. White evangelical Protestants, a segment that worships a lord and savior who apparently wanted a man who brags about sexual assault to be president, have the most faith among white religious groups: 75 percent stated Trump is qualified for his new job.

3. Three-quarters of Americans want Trump to release his tax returns.

Last week, after waiting long enough to ensure there wouldn’t be enough time for him to respond to all the questions begging for answers, Trump finally held a press conference. Between attacks on the media and con games about his business conflicts, he insisted that “the only one[s] that care about my tax returns are the reporters.” Today, we are all reporters, I guess. Or at least the near 75 percent of us who want to see whatever Russian shenanigans and account overdrafts he’s hiding in those tax documents.

4. Most Americans believe Russia hacked Democratic emails.

Most Americans, 65 percent, believe the 17 intelligence agencies that report Russia hacked the DNC. No one reason got a majority of votes, but the largest number of respondents, 45 percent, believe the cyberespionage was undertaken to help Trump beat Hillary Clinton. This bodes poorly for that huge back tattoo Trump has that reads, “It Coulda Been China.”

It is great that the left's response to Trump includes doing surveys and polls indicating how much America loathes him, just like before the election. America needs more polls and surveys!

I just learned that Betsy DeVos is Erik Prince's sister. Also:

https://theintercept.com/2017/01/17/not ... e-shadows/

Erik Prince, America’s most notorious mercenary, is lurking in the shadows of the incoming Trump administration. A former senior U.S. official who has advised the Trump transition told The Intercept that Prince has been advising the team on matters related to intelligence and defense, including weighing in on candidates for the defense and state departments. The official asked not to be identified because of a transition policy prohibiting discussion of confidential deliberations.

On election night, Prince’s latest wife, Stacy DeLuke, posted pictures from inside Trump’s campaign headquarters as Donald Trump and Mike Pence watched the returns come in, including a close shot of Pence and Trump with their families. “We know some people who worked closely with [Trump] on his campaign,” DeLuke wrote. “Waiting for the numbers to come in last night. It was well worth the wait!!!! #PresidentTrump2016.” Prince’s sister, billionaire Betsy DeVos, is Trump’s nominee for education secretary and Prince (and his mother) gave large sums of money to a Trump Super PAC.

In July, Prince told Trump’s senior advisor and white supremacist Steve Bannon, at the time head of Breitbart News, that the Trump administration should recreate a version of the Phoenix Program, the CIA assassination ring that operated during the Vietnam War, to fight ISIS. Such a program, Prince said, could kill or capture “the funders of Islamic terror and that would even be the wealthy radical Islamist billionaires funding it from the Middle East, and any of the other illicit activities they’re in.”

Brave New Films Video: Protect Public Education by Stopping Betsy DeVos From Becoming Next U.S. Secretary of Education
"You lured me in with the promise of a high-quality education and you lied."
By Robert Greenwald / Brave New Films January 17, 2017

Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos for education secretary is a threat to public education. DeVos has spent millions funding the privatization of education in Michigan. The result? A failing school system where almost 80 percent of schools are run by private, for-profit companies.

The charter schools in Michigan, influenced by DeVos’s agenda, perform lower than national averages, have been criticized for misuse of taxpayer funding, and frequently shut down doors without warning or community input. Adding to the alarm is the fact that DeVos has never held a professional position in education in her life, but plans to lead the Department of Education, where she would be in charge of overseeing and providing equal access to quality education for all Americans.

Discover how the DeVos effect has harmed families and the education system in Michigan and contact your senators at 202-224-3121 and tell them to oppose her nomination!

Anthony ScaramucciDonald Trump senior advisor Anthony Scaramucci gave a long-ranging interview to Russian state-owned wire service TASS Tuesday.

“What the new American president is saying is that he has an enormous respect for the Russian people and the legacy of the relationship that the US has with Russia, which dates back to the Second World War,” Scaramucci told them.

“He has enormous respect for the Russian people and Russian culture and so he is signaling that, hopefully, whatever the hostilities may be, perhaps we can improve them over the coming years,” he continued.

Trump himself became the first U.S. presidential candidate to appear on Russian state-owned RT America in September of 2015. The campaign later insisted that Trump’s appearance was inadvertent.

FBI, 5 other agencies probe possible covert Kremlin aid to Trump

FBI Director James Comey has refused to confirm an investigation into the Russian hacking of emails. President-elect Donald Trump speaks during the presidential inaugural Chairman's Global Dinner, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, in Washington. FBI Director James Comey has refused to confirm an investigation into the Russian hacking of emails. President-elect Donald Trump speaks during the presidential inaugural Chairman's Global Dinner, Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, in Washington.

BY PETER STONE AND GREG GORDON
McClatchy Washington Bureau

The FBI and five other law enforcement and intelligence agencies have collaborated for months in an investigation into Russian attempts to influence the November election, including whether money from the Kremlin covertly aided President-elect Donald Trump, two people familiar with the matter said.

The agencies involved in the inquiry are the FBI, the CIA, the National Security Agency, the Justice Department, the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and representatives of the director of national intelligence, the sources said.

Investigators are examining how money may have moved from the Kremlin to covertly help Trump win, the two sources said. One of the allegations involves whether a system for routinely paying thousands of Russian-American pensioners may have been used to pay some email hackers in the United States or to supply money to intermediaries who would then pay the hackers, the two sources said.

Trump addresses Russia accusations, business dealings in post-election press conference
President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday delivered his first press conference since the November presidential election. Trump addressed his relationship with Russia and how he will handle his business once taking office.
C-SPAN
The informal, inter-agency working group began to explore possible Russian interference last spring, long before the FBI received information from a former British spy hired to develop politically damaging and unverified research about Trump, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the inquiry.

A KEY MISSION OF THE SIX-AGENCY GROUP HAS BEEN TO EXAMINE WHO FINANCED THE EMAIL HACKS OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE AND CLINTON CAMPAIGN CHAIRMAN JOHN PODESTA.

On Jan. 6, the director of national intelligence released a declassified report that concluded Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered an influence campaign to “undermine faith in the U.S. democratic process,” damage Hillary Clinton’s election prospects and bolster Trump’s. The campaign included the hacking of top Democrats’ emails and fake news distributed by Russian sources.

The president-elect, who will be inaugurated Friday, has said he believes Russia was involved with the hacking, and he has called allegations that he or his associates were involved a “political witch hunt” and a “complete and total fabrication.”

Trump has yet to say whether FBI Director James Comey will be retained. The rest of Trump’s newly appointed intelligence and law enforcement chiefs will inherit the investigation, whose outcome could create national and international fallout.

Trump's presidential transition team did not respond to a request for comment about the inquiry.

A key mission of the six-agency group has been to examine who financed the email hacks of the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. The London-based transparency group WikiLeaks released the emails last summer and in October.

The working group is scrutinizing the activities of a few Americans who were affiliated with Trump’s campaign or his business empire and of multiple individuals from Russia and other former Soviet nations who had similar connections, the sources said.

U.S. intelligence agencies not only have been unanimous in blaming Russia for the hacking of Democrats’ computers but also have concluded that the leaking and dissemination of thousands of emails of top Democrats, some of which caused headaches for the Clinton campaign, were done to help Trump win.

Trump and Republican members of Congress have said they believe Russia meddled in the U.S. election but that those actions didn’t change the outcome. However, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, a former chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that she believes that Russia’s tactics did alter the election result.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has opened its own investigation into Russia’s involvement in the campaign. That panel will have subpoena power.

ONE OF THE ALLEGATIONS INVOLVES WHETHER A SYSTEM FOR ROUTINELY PAYING THOUSANDS OF RUSSIAN-AMERICAN PENSIONERS MAY HAVE BEEN USED TO PAY SOME EMAIL HACKERS IN THE UNITED STATES OR TO INTERMEDIARIES WHO WOULD THEN PAY THE HACKERS, THE TWO SOURCES SAID.

FBI Director Comey refused at a recent Senate hearing to comment on whether the bureau was investigating Russia’s hacking campaign for possible criminal prosecutions. Spokespeople for the FBI, the Justice Department and the national intelligence director declined to comment.

The BBC reported last week that the joint inquiry was launched when the CIA learned last spring, through a Baltic ally, of a recording indicating the Russian government was planning to funnel funds aimed at influencing the U.S. election.

Another source of information was the former longtime British intelligence agent, Christopher Steele, who was hired to gather opposition research about Trump for a Republican client and later a Democrat. Early last summer, Steele became alarmed about information he was receiving from a network of Russian sources describing a web of Trump’s business relationships with wealthy Russians and alleged political ties to the Kremlin, according to two people who know him. These sources also declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Steele’s reports also alleged that Russian consulates in New York, Washington and Miami were used to deliver “tens of thousands of dollars” to Kremlin-hired operatives using fictitious names as if they were legitimate Russian-American pensioners. That “ruse” was designed to give Russia “plausible deniability,” Steele’s reports suggested. However, Russia does not operate a consulate in Miami.

Steele, who had worked previously with the FBI and was well regarded, fed the bureau information in July and September suggesting collusion between Trump associates and Moscow in the hacking of Democratic computers, they said. Eventually, he met in Italy with an FBI official to share more information alleging that a top Trump campaign official had known about the hacking as early as last June, the sources said. About a month after the election, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona gave FBI Director Comey a copy of a 35-page compilation of Steele’s reports.

BuzzFeed posted the 35 pages of allegations online, acknowledging the report had obvious errors and had not been corroborated. Several news organizations, including McClatchy, had the document earlier but had resisted publishing any of the allegations because of the lack of verification.

Trump and Putin have branded Steele’s dossier as “fake news.” On Jan. 11, at his only news conference as president-elect, Trump dismissed it as “nonsense” and “crap.” On Tuesday, Putin accused soon-to-depart Obama administration officials of trying to undermine Trump’s “legitimacy,” suggesting that the White House had released Steele’s dossier. The Russian leader said those who had prepared the dossier were “worse than prostitutes.”

Steele’s information has been treated as unverified intelligence by the working group because most of it came from purported Kremlin leaks and virtually all of it is extremely difficult to corroborate, the people familiar with the investigation said.

The BBC reported that the FBI had obtained a warrant on Oct. 15 from the highly secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court allowing investigators access to bank records and other documents about potential payments and money transfers related to Russia. One of McClatchy’s sources confirmed the report.

Susan Hennessey, a former attorney for the National Security Agency who is now a fellow at the Brookings Institution, said she had no knowledge that a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant had been issued. However, she stressed that such warrants are issued only if investigators can demonstrate “probable cause” that a crime has been committed and the information in Steele’s dossier couldn’t have met that test.

“If, in fact, law enforcement has obtained a FISA warrant, that is an indication that additional evidence exists outside of the dossier,” she said.

One episode that Steele’s reports described from multiple sources referred to a late-summer meeting in Prague between Russian government representatives and Michael Cohen, a lawyer for the Trump Organization, the president-elect’s vast business operation. But the FBI has been unable to establish that Cohen was in Prague during that period, the two sources familiar with the working group said.

Cohen has denied ever traveling to the Czech Republic, although he told The Wall Street Journal that he did so in 2001.

For months, Trump has voiced positive sentiments toward Putin. In early January, he tweeted that “only ‘stupid’ people, or fools” would think it’s bad to have good relations with Russia.

“When I am President, Russia will respect us far more than they do now and both countries will, perhaps, work together to solve some of the many great and pressing problems and issues of the WORLD!” he tweeted last week.

During the campaign in July, he displayed ignorance that Russian-backed separatists had invaded Crimea in eastern Ukraine in 2014 and he called on Russia to hack away to uncover thousands of emails that Clinton had never made public after using a private server while secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland last July, Trump’s campaign associates successfully changed the Republican Party’s platform to weaken a provision advocating more military support for the Ukrainian government in its fight to defend itself against the Russian-backed incursion in Crimea.

Freedom Rider: No Tears for John Lewis
by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley
“Lewis is giving the new president the cold shoulder only because he believes that Russia interfered in the electoral process.”

“I was beaten bloody by police officers. But I never hated them. I said, ‘Thank you for your service.’” --Congressman John Lewis

The people who fought against Jim Crow segregation in the 1960s were quite literally risking their lives. The list of martyrs is a long one. Activists of that era are rightly respected and their courage must not be forgotten or taken for granted. But as congressman John Lewis proves, their actions at that time should not provide dispensation from critique in the 21st century. Lewis is the latest target of president-elect Donald Trump’s attacks but that shouldn’t give him a pass either.

Despite his early history, Lewis now exemplifies everything that is wrong with the Congressional Black Caucus, the Democratic Party and the black misleadership class. The caucus was once known as “the conscience of the Congress.” Those men and women were always among the most left leaning members and could be counted on to reliably fight against domestic injustice and imperialism abroad. They weren’t unafraid of their party leadership or of presidents either.

“The CBC that is a shell of its former self.”

But all that changed when they were targeted by big money contributors like the rest of their congressional colleagues. After years of unsuccessfully attempting to make inroads among black Americans the right wing realized their error. They began to promote compliant corporatist candidates for office and to target people like Cynthia McKinney and Earl Hilliard for defeat. The result is now a CBC that is a shell of its former self.

Instead of providing inspirational leadership to their constituents CBC members are now mere lackeys for the corporate wing of the Democratic Party. They said nothing when Barack Obama made grand austerity bargains with Republicans, or used sanctions, jihadists and drone warfare to kill in Somalia and Libya, or when he refused to prosecute killer cops. Only one of them, Keith Ellison, chose to support Bernie Sanders instead of Hillary Clinton, and CBC’s lobbying arm gave her a hearty and undeserved endorsement.

Lewis stood out among all the genuflectors. Having been dubbed a “civil rights icon” his opinions are given undue weight and he uses them to uphold the corrupt establishment. Not only did the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation endorse Clinton but Lewis chose to give the hapless Sanders a very public beat down. Sanders used his own youthful movement activism as a political calling card but Lewis dismissed him. He claimed he knew nothing about Sanders but did know the Clintons who were great friends of black people. The effort to discredit Sanders was so obvious and the claims about the Clintons were so outrageous that Lewis was forced to back track and clarify his comments.

“The CBC said nothing when Barack Obama made grand austerity bargains with Republicans, or used sanctions, jihadists and drone warfare to kill in Somalia and Libya, or when he refused to prosecute killer cops.”

But, like the rest of the black misleaders, Lewis never stopped stomping on the mildly reformist Bernie Sanders. Sanders signature proposal of providing free university education was rejected out of hand by the civil rights icon. “I think it’s the wrong message to send to any group. There’s not anything free in America. We all have to pay for something. Education is not free. Health care is not free. Food is not free. Water is not free. I think it’s very misleading to say to the American people, we’re going to give you something free.”
Of course all of those things should be free. That statement alone exposed Lewis as a rank opportunist. We don’t know what went through his mind at the moment he was beaten by cops but it doesn’t matter now. He used his experience to win a congressional seat and all the trappings that come with it, including giving paid speeches at Goldman Sachs.

Trump won the old fashioned way. He went right to the heart of white American angst about immigration and white survival and the economic insecurity that they feel they should not suffer. But he is in over his head. Trump is not only a political novice but he is thin skinned and oafish. In the case of Lewis he has turned an ordinary Democratic Party hack into a victim of the man half of the country hates.

Lewis opined that he wouldn’t attend the inauguration because he deemed Trump “illegitimate.” He reached this conclusion not because Trump lost the popular vote or stacked his cabinet with generals or appeals to outspoken white supremacists. Lewis is giving the new president the cold shoulder only because he believes that Russia interfered in the electoral process. This canard has the stamp of approval from the Democratic Party and their minions in the corporate media.

“Lewis claimed he knew nothing about Sanders but did know the Clintons who were great friends of black people.”

This Russophobia proves Democratic allegiance to empire and kills several political birds with one stone. The United States scores propaganda points in its endless fight against any nation that opposes their hegemony. Russia is also used to explain away the Democrats’ defeat and distract their members who won’t call the leadership to account like they ought to do.

The NSA and CIA and FBI do for Barack Obama what they do for every president. When presidents want to make the case for war or domestic oppression they tell the intelligence agency to say that there is WMD in Iraq or an imminent threat from the black liberation movement. Intelligence agencies are used as a tool of propaganda to get the public buy in to the state’s actions. The movement that spawned Lewis was the primary victim of COINTELPRO, the program used to discredit and even to kill people who fought against the system as Lewis did. The movement was crushed by the deep state but 50 years later, one of its “icons” parrots their every word.

The black misleaders feed at the trough of the party establishment and their benefactors in corporate America. Their lives and livelihoods depend on keeping the status quo alive. Lewis is a predictably bland Democrat who uses his past as a cover to commit the worst of Democratic Party wrong doing.

It shouldn’t matter what Trump thinks of Lewis. If this phony contretemps is any indication we’ll have four years of foolishness ahead of us. Any mediocre politician will be elevated to sainthood status if the defensive and paranoid president attacks. John Lewis has certainly earned his iconic status this week. As Inauguration Day approaches he presents a teachable moment. The lesson is to ignore the likes of Lewis and his ilk. They are no friends of black people and are undeserving of our support, even if Donald Trump attacks.
