The Disappointment: Or, The Force of Credulity

The Disappointment is narrated by a mysterious artifact carved of limestone, supposedly dug up in Missouri in 1883. It looks like a fish, or maybe a lizard. Archaeologists can’t explain it, so it sits in a library basement, collecting dust and telling stories.

Infowars taps Trump-friendly birther to lead Washington coverage

by Tom Kludt @tomkludt
January 31, 2017: 4:38 PM ET

Practicing journalism in autocracies
The fringe right-wing outlet Infowars has tapped one of the leading promoters of the debunked conspiracy theory surrounding Barack Obama's place of birth to helm its fledgling Washington, D.C. bureau.
Jerome Corsi, author of the 2011 book "Where's the Birth Certificate? The Case That Barack Obama Is Not Eligible To Be President," said he's leaving WorldNetDaily, another conspiratorial publication to join Infowars.
Appearing on "The Alex Jones Show," a radio and Internet show hosted by Infowars' founder and proprietor, on Tuesday, Corsi said he believes he will receive credentials for White House press briefings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
"I expect to get cleared, perhaps tomorrow," Corsi said.
A White House spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.
Corsi, who also co-authored a book questioning John Kerry's service in Vietnam that had a significant influence on the 2004 presidential campaign, has a history with President Trump. Jones said Tuesday that the reporter and the president have known each other "for 40-plus years."
The two found a common cause in their scrutiny of Obama's birth certificate, with Trump reportedly seeking insight from Corsi back in 2011. They didn't always see eye-to-eye on the matter. In 2011, after Obama released his long-form birth certificate, Corsi claimed that Trump had told him a computer expert concluded the document was computer-generated.
Trump denied having said this and, adding insult to injury, noted that he had not read Corsi's book either. Around the same time, Corsi claimed that Trump worked with Obama to neutralize the birther conspiracy theory.
But by 2015, after Trump launched his presidential bid, Corsi's attitude about Trump had changed, and he went on Jones' show to declare Trump "for real."
Related: What is Infowars?
Jones is assembling what he described Tuesday as a "nucleus of a Washington bureau based around writers and investigative journalists." He called Corsi "a real thoroughbred of journalism," and said he wants to "build an operation with probably 10 people."
It wouldn't be unheard of for an outlet like Infowars to score a White House credential; they are not restricted to major outlets and no test of credibility is required to get one. Lester Kinsolving, a radio host who has written for WorldNetDaily, had a credential and attended briefings for years. But the symbolism isn't lost on Jones.
"We have to be on the field as real media," Jones told Corsi.
Infowars was an enthusiastic backer of Trump's presidential campaign, and Jones clearly expects his outlet to gain extra credibility now that Trump is in the White House.
Jones, a manic personality with a proclivity for colorful rants, said Tuesday that he doesn't want mainstream outlets like CNN shunned from the White House briefing room.
"I want them there frothing and flailing and lying and just doing what they do," Jones said.
Related: While other outlets fact-check Trump, Infowars provides alternative facts
Infowars been reliable a supplier of conspiracy theories -- from 9/11 "trutherism" to the false claim that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax. Such radical beliefs long kept Jones in the fringe, largely shunned by high-profile politicians. But in Trump, Jones found a kindred spirit with a mainstream audience.
"Your reputation is amazing," Trump told Jones in a 2015 interview. "I will not let you down."
Jones indicated on Tuesday that Trump has made good on that vow, gushing that the president may "go down as George Washington 2.0." Trump spent his first week "just dominating the globalists," Jones said approvingly.
On Tuesday, Corsi told Jones he wants to build "an army of our journalists who are trained to present the truth" in order to counter what he said were "mainstream media lies."
In order to get credentialed, Corsi said, he had provided to the White House various information it requested from him -- including, among other things, his birth certificate.

Alex Jones: “I’m Ready To Die For Trump”
Jones: "I've Studied History. ... This Is Bigger Than 1776 If Trump Can Deliver"
ALEX JONES (HOST): Trump is so fire-breathing, so energetic, so cunning, so real, and he’s having results so amazing that it just makes me endeared to Trump – I’m ready to die for Trump, at this point. And I’m already ready to die for America, it’s the same feeling I have for America, because he is America, you’re America.

It’s the same way I get endeared to people I know that have fought hard and lost legs or arms for this country and just how hard working and good they are and how compared to the average person who’s lazy and doesn’t care, I just feel humble to be around those type of people.

Because I study policy; I’m a policy wonk. And I know that Trump and [Stephen] Bannon really know what are happening – what’s happening, they’re really trying to cut taxes, they’re really trying to get loans to small businesses, they’re really trying to get us out of carbon taxes and Obamacare, and they’re doing it, they’re delivering. And it’s so well thought out; it’s so good. I’ve studied history, I’ve covered politics for 25 years, 21 on air. And I’ve never seen anything like this. This is bigger than 1776 if Trump can deliver.

And then I see all the news -- I’ve got articles today, “Ha ha, there’s tens of thousands of bureaucrats that are going to leak everything you’re doing militarily and sabotage you.” That’s called treason. That’s executionable.”

Kurt Nimmo, a longtime former editor for Alex Jones’ Infowars.com, has been publicly trashing his ex-boss as a “snake oil salesman” who sold out to support President Donald Trump.

Alex Jones and his Infowars.com are known for pushing conspiracy theories, including claiming the government perpetrated the 9/11 attacks and the tragedies at Columbine, Oklahoma City, Sandy Hook, and the Boston Marathon, among others.

The site’s editor, Paul Joseph Watson, apparently has no editorial standards and has repeatedly posted fraudulent information. Jones recently announced that the purported news organization would be attending White House press briefings and that it had hired widely discredited reporter Jerome Corsi as its D.C. correspondent.

Infowars has become one of the leading sources of pro-Donald Trump boosterism. Trump’s presidential campaign repeatedly tweeted out links to Infowars content in 2016. Trump himself tweeted out a link to Infowars.com’s aggregation of a conservative blog post to claim that Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 attacks. (In fact, no evidence supports that.) Trump appeared on Jones’ program during the presidential campaign and apparently called Jones after the election to thank his audience for its support. Trump adviser and regular contributor Roger Stone told The Washington Post that Trump “has watched Infowars.”

Nimmo states on his LinkedIn page that he worked for Infowars.com from October 2008 through July 2016 and “built [the] current website from the ground up in 2008.” He now operates his own website Another Day in the Empire and is a content producer for Newsbud.

Nimmo has repeatedly trashed his former employer for turning into “infotrump.” He tweeted that the site has become “the Trump branch office in Austin” and that Jones "turned over his audience to the #Trump Borg hive." He’s also called Jones a “snake oil salesman” who is “playing the race & religion card.” Nimmo responded to the site’s hiring of Jerome Corsi by writing: “#Infowars hires neocon, joins Republican effort to rekindle Cold War. Imagine my surprise.” He has also suggested that Jones has purged personnel who have disagreed with his new direction.

Here are some of his tweets trashing Infowars.com and Alex Jones:

This just makes too much sense.
If most conspiracy theorists are idealistic and paranoid, then they really can't stand staying too far on the margins gnashing their teeth at the all the rank conspiracies being carried out.
Their idealism creates the need for them to believe that someone is going to punish and expose these nasty lizard men.
Enter Trump the savior.

But as they are also equally paranoid they need to continue to believe in the nasty lizard men are still up to their hijinks.
So Trump just has to paint all his critics and enemies as part of some conspiracy.
Enter Trump the exposer.
So somehow the President of the United States has been able to be portrayed as Bruce Wayne and all of Alex Jones InfoWarts have seen the bat signal.

And if Alex Jones is willing to die for Trump, then he is willing to kill for Trump. If his life means so little he is willing to sacrifice it at the foot of a creepy, megalomaniac casino hotelier then anyone deemed an enemy of Trump, and supposedly out to hurt him, it follows, is a legitimate person to stop in his carrying out his "dying for Trump". And I'm sure this prescription will make sense to a more than a few of his more unhinged, and entrenched InfoWarts.

Intelligence, the third trait of a conspiracy theorist in the holy trinity (Idealism, Paranoia, Intelligence) that makes all the difference.
(Yes, rigor and intuition are important to, hometown motto, blah blah.)

Nimmo started out with the Counterpunch crowd, and I was always surprised to see him embrace such a blatant conman as Alex Jones...Either way, we can only hope that Trump's immediate about-face into standard neo-liberal/neo-con policies, and total lack of any sort of "deep-state revelations" will make Jones' head explode...I imagine his audience's reaction will be based on the price of gold...

The "Dean Scream" brought down an entire presidential campaign in days, but Alex Jones does his version regularly enough to create a long compilation, and he has the President's ear.

The Alex Jones influence: Trump’s “deep state” fears come from his conspiracy theorist ally and adviser
Trump's paranoia and speculation have all the trademarks of the Infowars head honcho

According to the New York Times, while neither Donald Trump nor Steve Bannon have used the term publicly, they are both true believers in the “deep state.” Bannon has spoken to supporter and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich about “his suspicion of the deep state and what he sees as its pernicious influence.”

It is certainly true that Trump’s repeated smearing of the country’s national security agencies before he was sworn in has caused some consternation. When leaks about Trump’s connections to Russia and the hacking of the Democratic Party during the 2016 election hit the news, Trump complained on Twitter, asking, “Are we living in Nazi Germany?”

Outgoing CIA director John Brennan slammed this language, saying, “I think he has to be mindful that he does not have a full appreciation and understanding of what the implications are of going down that road.” The comment appears to have increased the antagonism between Trump and agencies, and has probably led to some of the information being released — but so has his unusually close relationship to a foreign entity with a vested interest in his election.

But that is more in line with traditional disgruntled government agency behavior. Where is Trump getting this paranoid “deep state” stuff?

The term, with its surrounding air of paranoia and speculation, has all the hallmarks of his longtime ally Roger Stone and his associate, right-wing conspiracy radio/internet host Alex Jones.

Stone has been Trump’s political whisperer for decades, at one point holding a leadership role in his 2016 presidential campaign, and continues to be a trusted adviser to this day. Stone has written several conspiracy minded books, including one blaming President Lyndon Johnson for orchestrating the murder of President John F. Kennedy. Stone also backed Trump’s bizarre allegation that Senator Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the JFK assassination.

But Jones is the conspiracy mother lode: He described himself as one of the “founding fathers” of the so-called “9/11 truth movement,” which claims that the 9/11 terror attacks were executed by the government of the United States. Jones believes that the government — aka the “deep state” — has orchestrated attacks and events throughout history. This includes the bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building, the massacre at Sandy Hook (he claims that many of the parents were actors), the Boston Marathon attack, and on and on.

For decades, Jones has existed at the fringes of right wing media, but Trump appeared on his show in 2015 after announcing his presidential campaign, and the two have been rhetorically joined at the hip since. During the presidential primary season, Jones enlisted his audience to vote for Trump, and Stone has been whispering in both men’s ears (he appears on Jones’ show and writes for his conspiracy website, Infowars).

Trump praised Jones for having an “amazing” reputation when he appeared on his show, and reportedly told him he was “one of the greatest influences I’ve ever seen” in a personal telephone conversation. According to Jones, he and Trump have kept in contact for months via phone conversations.

While Trump has long embraced conspiracy theories — his biggest political move before his campaign was the promotion of the racist birther conspiracy alleging President Obama was not born in the United States — his interaction with Jones has led to publicly echoing Jones’ rantings about who truly controls the world.

Even Jones seemed amazed to hear Trump speaking about his crank beliefs on the national stage. He told his audience it was “amazing” and “surreal to talk about issues here on air and then word-for-word hear [Donald] Trump say it two days later.”

The mind-meld was cemented with Trump’s speech accepting the Republican nomination as he declared war on “globalism” — the overarching idea, steeped in anti-Semitism and which Jones has promoted for decades, of a vast conspiracy of wealthy, powerful “globalists” who are the hidden, invisible hands behind world events and who manipulate them in service of accumulating personal power and wealth.

The two men remained in synchronicity with each other as the campaign progressed, with Jones pushing out conspiracies (amplified by fellow conspiracy theorist Matt Drudge at his highly trafficked Drudge Report), that were echoed by Trump on the presidential campaign trail.

Jones claimed the election would be “rigged,” and Trump ran with the idea. Jones called Obama “the founding general” of ISIS, then Trump said Obama and Hillary Clinton were the “founder” and “co-founder” of the terrorist group. And on and on.

Jones was overjoyed that Trump won, but in language that Trump is now echoing with his theorizing about the “deep state” and unfounded allegations of wiretapping by President Obama, Jones claimed that Obama and the CIA were working on a plot to have Trump killed.

Both men believe that a secret plot is in place by elements of the U.S. government fighting a shadowy internal war against Trump and his administration. It is not a coincidence that their strange beliefs and behavior are in sync. Jones has Trump’s ear, and is telling him absurd nonsense that the vast majority of people would dismiss as unhinged ranting and raving.

But Trump is obviously taking it seriously, and using his platform to elevate it to a global audience. This is extremely dangerous.
