2007 Vs. 2018: A Fun Comparison

Postby 8bitagent » Sun Sep 09, 2018 6:46 am

I've been urged by a friend to come back on RI, and it's just surreal it's almost 2019, 12 years since I joined.. And oh how things did not pan out quite like our predictions. Even though Jeff doesn't blog anymore(and boy, would 2018 be the ultimate fodder for a classic RI blog post), I am glad he's allowed this antiquated forum to linger on. I joined RI in 2007, and I thought it'd be fun to make some comparisons and contrasts to things *then* and *now*

Of course back in 2007, Donald Trump was still giving money to pro choice groups and espousing standard Democrat talking points while vigorously supporting Hillary Clinton(before Bannon got him
to turn into a "Popularist")

2007/// Liberals: BUSH AND MCCAIN ARE NEOCON EVIL WARCRIMINALS
2018/// Liberals: Bush and Mccain weren't so bad. Heck I'd even call them patriots. Look how they criticized Trump!

2007/// Alex Jones and right wing conspiracy kooks: "Muslim blamed terror plots and attacks are all false flags staged by the CIA and MI6 to demonize Muslims and push us into Big Brother"
2018/// Alex Jones and right wing conspiracy kooks: "Muslims are behind every evil, paid by Soros, to bring about the death of civilization. We need big brother to keep the Muslims in line"

2007/// Republicans: Russia is the biggest evil trying to undermine our Democracy
2018/// Democrats: Russia is the biggest evil trying to undermine our Democracy

2007/// Liberals: Buddhists are totally peace loving zen gurus we should aspire to be
2018/// Liberals: Holy shit, Buddhists are leading the biggest mass genocide and ethnic cleansing against Muslims in Myanbar(Burma)

2007/// Republicans: I am a staunch constitutionalist, I believe in the rule of law!
2018/// Republicans: The Justice department and constitution are an obstruction towards the president!

2007/// Republicans: Look at Howard Dean with his weird scream, womanizing John Edwards...the Democrats are disgusting
2018/// Republicans: Ok so we have a bible hating womanizer as president who calls southerners mentally retarded, but evangelicals have a duty to vote for him!

2007/// Rawstory Left: Saudi Arabia may have been involved in 9/11
2018/// Rawstory Left: You know, Saudi Arabia is doing some progressive things now and isnt so bad...like allowing women to drive!

2007/// liberals: Israel is a criminal state
2018/// neo fascists: Israel is a criminal state(but boy are we jealous of their ethno state)

2007/// Liberals: Bush got us into horrible wars that destabilized Iraq and Afghanistan
2018/// Republicans: Obama got us into horrible wars that destabilized Libya and Yemen

2007/// RI styled leftists: There is a global elite pedo ring
2018/// Liberals: Anyone who talks about a global pedo elite ring is an alt right nazi idiot

2007/// Republicans: Violent Music, video games, free speech and activism must be stopped for subverting America
2018/// Leftists: EVERYTHING IS GASLIGHTING PROBLEMATIC AF, ban it all, only approved speech is ok

2007/// Liberals: There needs to be more civil rights for women, gays, and ethnic minorities in the Islamic world
2018/// Liberals: How dare you say anything bad about Islamic culture, you Nazi

2007/// Liberals: NIKE is exploiting workers with slave labor
2018/// Liberals: NIKE is the shining beacon of progressive values!

2007/// liberals: There's a lot of suspicious deaths and "accidents/suicides" regarding whistleblowers and journalists
2018/// liberals: ONLY SEAN HANNITY AND FOX NEWS PEOPLE THINK WEIRD DEATHS ARE SUSPICIOUS YOU SETH RICH TRUTHER IDIOT!

2007/// alex jones conspiracists: Hugo Chavez and Venezuela are sticking it to the CIA oil hungry globalists
2018/// alex jones conspiracists: Venezuela is why socialism can never work

2007/// Glenn Beck and Oreilly are seen as extremists by the left on tv
2018// Tucker Carlson literally reads StormF---- talking points every night on his top rated Fox Show

I have no intention of sinking any time into this forum, any attempt to enquire beyond media defined parameters triggers spamavalanche, but I do pop in occasionally for a fix, very like the one above. Cheers!

The shift in media preferences has a lot to do with this, too. I've been mostly in 2007 era RI here since I got back, going through the subforums and digging through content that looks like ... well, this: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=4064

A lot of those links still work!

What strikes me as the biggest difference is that in 2018, conspiracy theory is no longer literate. (God knows, it was always iffy.) But, reading and writing is not the primary activity anymore -- it's podcasts, youtube and memes.

I reckon, in retrospect, we should have paid even more attention to ARGs.

Harvey, you're all good. Keep posting as well. I hope by 8bit posting again, we can get some other old timers to emerge from the woodwork as well.

Yes it was me. He unleashed a shit ton of shit over IM on FB last night and I said dude this is all going to waste on only me. Go back to RI and make a discussion of it! I didn't think he would, but he did and I think hit a couple out the park last night as I logged in this morning. Everyone has the capability to hit shit out the park though and I think we all welcome it.

OK Harvey, where is this action? It's not like all of us only ply this place. I only come here because I "know" the crew so to speak. I have never used the Internet to be an asshole -- though I was called a racist and a sexist on two separate occasions last week on FB for disagreeing with purists which I just peaced out from. So I really don't get into anything with anyone anymore online besides here and Seattle's "The Stranger". People simply do not get nuance.

Well it is surreal...every hour of the day in 2018, Trump and his Alex Jones/Hannity/Stone surrogates talk about the "Deep state shadow government conspiracy" and "globalists" in every other breath, and "elite pedo rings".
Shoot, two years ago Trump on the campaign trail said the neocons lied to go into Iraq and said Saudi Arabia was behind 9/11

To summarize the difference between the Anti Bush left(and yes,....the conspiracy anti Bush right), we all hated Bush and the neocons who we said were The Powers That Be, Deep State, some called globalists. Stringpullers.

Now we have a former WWF wrestling hall of fame 80s goofy real estate magnate turned movie/tv star and reality host who controls America....WHO IS ALSO using the same conspiracy paranoid buzzwords and language. That, I never could have predicted.

When Trump tweets about "the globalist deep state", Hannity devotes numerous shows to deep state assasinations, and the whole Pizzagate thing(when pedo elite rings have a lot of documentation) its like the shark was jumped and flew into another dimension

Also happy 9/11 anniversary everyone. Happy to see Dubya and Mccain are now normalized as "patriots against Trump" in the Huffpo Daily Kos Daily Beast CNN MSNBC world

I want to get away from politics for just a second...my favorite RI thread of all time was about time, society and "Hauntology". The idea of time, buildings and geography that seems almost stuck in a loop. (I think?)

In 2007 I had a RAZR flip phone like a lot of people...I didnt predict that Blade Runner video phone calls would be an every day normal thing...or that virtually everyone on the planet would be addicted to not just Facebook, but have a black monolith in their pocket.
