Turning Point USA and Michael Flynn to Speak Along Side Far-Right Parties Linked to Current Neo-Nazi Rallies In Germany

Image

From September 14th to the 16th, far-Right conspiracy website The Gateway Pundit will sponsor the Phyllis Schlafly’s Gateway Eagle Council, which will bring together a variety of far-Right activists, media makers, Alt-Right youtubers, and even representatives of far-Right parities in Europe. This collection will include conspiracy theorists associated with Pizzagate and InfoWars (Mike Cernovich, Jack Posobiec, Cassandra Fairbanks, and Gateway Pundit staff), that make up (oh do they!) the “New Right.” Professional huckster, James O’Keefe. Various speakers from the US military and law enforcement will also grace the stage, such as Michael Flynn (who worked for a short amount of time in the Trump White House), Joe Arpaio, and Anthony Shaffer. Representing Turning Point USA will be their figure heads, Charlie Kirk and Candance Owens, TPUSA is billionaire backed with also links to the Alt-Right.

Jason Kessler Wants To Get Back Into The Alt-Right’s Good Graces

Image

Not long after Heyer’s death, Kessler himself gloated on Twitter: “Heather Heyer was a fat, disgusting Communist. Communists have killed 94 million. Looks like it was payback time.” He later blamed the tweet on his account being hacked. Then he blamed a cocktail of booze, Xanax, and Ambien.

“From a propaganda, or…” Rufus started to say before catching himself. “From the perspective of optics, it was a great success because you got all the normie conservatives to talk about how violent Antifa were, instead of take out all their frustration on us.” He suggested that because Kessler “delivered such bad optics to the Left” journalists would now ignore UTR2 in its entirety.

Kessler then singled out the media for criticism, claiming that they wrongly made it appear as though the first UTR was “an organized terror attack, rather than a free speech rally” — again this was the rally in which participants boasted in Discord servers about how they were preparing for violent confrontations and joked about mowing down protesters with cars.

Kessler, in an effort to sanitize his reputation and absolve himself of any responsibility for violent actions at UTR, claimed he had since started “preaching nonviolence as a tactic” “many months” ago.

Kessler then said that “the majority of the people protesting were white people” — specifically “white liberals who hate their own people” — and alleged that they were not only “saying anti-white stuff” to him, but also “saying anti-Hispanic stuff to the Latino supporters who were just walking around with Trump hats.” As with all things Kessler claims, this should be taken with a few grains of salt.

Musonius Rufus responded by whitewashing 1930s fascism as merely a “response to Communism,” which he called “this totaltarian [sic], hateful ideology that took over a country and was killing all these innocent people.” He added that it was “funny” that Leftists today are willing to call themselves “anti-fascists,” and suggested there was “no discernible difference” between modern anti-fascists and “Commies.”

There’s a new battlefield in the culture wars: comic books. The alt-right now has gotten in the business, led by a buxom, Confederate flag-waving superhero named Rebel and a white vigilante who turns immigrants over to ICE.

Reddit ‘Quarantines’ White Nationalist Subreddits

Image

Reddit still has Holocaust deniers, 9/11 truthers, misogynistic “men’s rights activists,” not to mention a community of nearly half a million people into gruesome videos of other people dying.

But all that material became a little bit harder to find Thursday. In what the social giant described as a “quarantine,” Reddit added content disclaimers to a number of controversial “subreddits,” including four with more than 100,000 subscribers each.

The quarantine affected the site’s main meeting places for Holocaust deniers, “men’s rights activists,” and sexless “incels,” as well as a number of subreddits related to white nationalism and the alt-right.

The quarantine also affected at least one subreddit on the left, R/FullCommunism, and a number of gory subreddits, including several devoted to video, pictures, or audio of people dying. A subreddit devoted to “IRL Streamer” Ice Poseidon, who streams his life online and is frequently pushed into bizarre or dangerous situation by his viewers, was also put behind the quarantine.

The quarantine doesn’t just make anyone wanting to visit the forums read a disclaimer. It also prevents the subreddits from coming up in searches, or appearing in summaries of the most popular material on Reddit.

The company also doesn’t earn money from the quarantined subreddits, according to a Reddit statement. In at least some cases, quarantined subreddits can only be viewed by users with registered accounts and valid emails—a huge setback for the subreddits, since Reddit users otherwise aren’t required to register accounts.

The disclaimers added to a number of the hate subreddits also include links to more moderate content. Visitors to R/TheRedPill, for example, a men’s rights subreddit, are now encouraged to visit a link to a site about “positive masculinity” instead.

Two interviews about the U.S. far right

By Matthew N Lyons | Thursday, October 04, 2018

ImageI recently recorded two radio interviews about my book Insurgent Supremacists: The U.S. Far Right’s Challenge to State and Empire. Between them, the interviews touch on many of the book’s major themes.

Christina Aanestad interviewed me on September 16 for The Sunday Show on KPFA of the Pacifica Radio Network. The interview aired on September 23 as part of the station’s pledge drive and is available in KPFA’s online archives, here. Our 45-minute conversation explored a range of issues, including the following:

federal security agencies’ history of widely varied relationships with violent right-wing organizations – ranging from sponsorship to crackdown
Christian theocratic forces – Christian Reconstructionists and New Apostolic Reformation
the contrasting racial politics of white nationalists and Christian theocrats
Patriot movement ideology and conspiracist anti-elitism
the alt-right’s political origins – especially European New Right, paleoconservatism, and manosphere
Proud Boys – distinct from but in coalition with white nationalists
the alt-right’s relationship with Donald Trump
some pitfalls in analyzing the far right
the need for a multi-pronged antifascist strategy.

The second interview was with Rob Seimetz for the program Moving Forward on the Progressive Radio Network. We spoke for an hour by phone on September 22 and the interview aired a few days later. It’s available here. Some of the points addressed include:

the concept of fascism and whether the U.S. should be considered a fascist country
white supremacism and color-blindness as different forms of racist ideologies
the distinction between rightists who are loyal to the existing U.S. political system and those who are not, and how these forces are also interconnected
anti-establishment and leftist-sounding elements of far right politics, and the difference between systemic analyses of power and anti-elitism based on conspiracy theories
the recent “shift in the center of gravity of patriarchal politics in the US” from the Christian right’s emphasis on the patriarchal family (and mobilizing women) to the alt-right/manosphere emphasis on predatory sexuality (and excluding women from politics altogether)
paleoconservatism’s role in shaping the alt-right
the alt-right’s mixed success since Trump took office, and the longer-term threat posed by far right forces.

Nazi trolls claimed “Aryan Goddess” Taylor Swift as one of their own. Now she’s publicly supporting Dems — and the trolls are losing it

Image
Taylor Swift liked this meme on Instagram

Several years ago, alt-right trolls decided to claim Taylor Swift as one of their own, trying to convince the world that she was some sort of undercover Nazi waiting for the right moment to start preaching her fashy message openly.

The Daily Stormer’s Andrew Anglin was perhaps the most energetic promoters of the Nazi Taylor Swift meme, describing the singer as “Aryan Goddess Taylor Swift: Nazi Avatar of the White European People” and posting memes passing off Hitler quotes as hers.

Sunday night, Swift put the Nazi Taylor Swift meme definitively to rest with an Instagram post announcing her support for two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee and declaring that she “cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.”

Alt-rightists and their fellow travelers have reacted to the news with furious denunciations of Swift’s alleged betrayal of her fans, some of them apparently forgetting that the Nazi Swift memes were supposed to be a big joke on the libs. Over on the Nazi-infested Twitter alternative Gab, former fans and pop-music haters alike competed to see who could throw the most vile invective her way.

Useful Idiots of the Art World

“A Tumultuous Assembly” by Marinetti, an active supporter of Mussolini.

In a gallery in East London, in the summer of 2016, something strange was taking place. LD50 was about a year old by then, run by Lucia Diego, and had hosted shows by prominent artists at varying stages of their careers—Dinos and Jake Chapman, John Russell and Joey Holder, Deanna Havas, and Jesse Darling to name a few. A program of speaking events was organised, described by the gallery as a “conference on reactionary and neo-reactionary thought.”

Amid reputable speakers, a number of more divisive figures were programmed. Nick Land was one, widely acknowledged to be an intellectual inspiration for segments of the alt-right, though he retains some residual credibility in the art world resulting from his academic work at the University of Warwick in the nineties. Brett Stevens was another, an extreme ethno-nationalist who inspired and praised the murderer Anders Breivik. “I am honored to be so mentioned by someone who is clearly far braver than I, no comment on his methods, but he chose to act where many of us write, think, and dream,” he wrote.

During the same period, a show titled “Amerika” was put on at the gallery, dedicated to popular alt-right imagery. A Hitler quote is placed alongside a picture of Taylor Swift in one piece. Cutesy semi-ironic placing like this helped to keep the tone of such work questionable, allowing itself plausible deniability. Lucia Diego’s contention was that the gallery’s aim, too, was to “explore” rather than to propagate. What does it mean to put alt-right imagery in a room? Well, what does it mean to place any object in any particular room? Who can say?

After comments by artists querying Diego’s opinions and voicing dissent were repeatedly deleted, artist Sophie Jung made public a private message sent to her by Diego. In it, Diego bemoans the cultural echo chamber of what she perceives to be the left-leaning art world and expresses qualified support for Trump’s Muslim ban on the basis that “it is a temporary measure to help transition governments.”

At this point, things blew up. The message was widely shared on social media, calls were made for artists to disavow the space, British newspapers picked up on the story. In a shockingly reckless move, Diego leaked screenshots of the artists involved to the far-right website Amerika.org. A movement was organised to shut down the gallery. Protestors gathered outside LD50 on Saturday February 25 to leaflet and alert the local community.

This seems to me an important starting point for a discussion of what has taken place at LD50; a concerted refusal of Diego’s attempt to frame the NRx conference as abstract.

LD50 is a real place, in a real neighborhood, filled with people who are directly threatened by the vile speech of the very real racists who were invited into it. Repeatedly, the defence mounted by the gallery has been that it was attempting to have an open discussion about reactionary ideologies. The implication is that LD50 were engaging in some sort of completely neutral anthropological consideration of current events, rather than extending a fawning welcome to alt-right lynchpins.

I have seen it said by antifa that LD50 is not a story about art, but about fascism. I take the point—what’s at stake here goes beyond the merely aesthetic.

But as much as this is a story about actual violence, it is also a story about art. It’s a story about how the excesses of one allow the outrages of the other. It’s a story about the voiding of language’s applied meaning. It’s a story about what exactly is gotten away with under the assumed guise of irony and objectivity.

Rebel Girl: Over the weekend, the fascist Proud Boys assaulted counterdemonstrators in both New York City and Portland, Oregon.

Clara: In New York, the millionaire founder of the Proud Boys, Gavin McInnes, was scheduled to give a performance on Friday at the Metropolitan Republican Club in Manhattan. The performance was a re-enactment of the assassination of a Japanese socialist in 1960. And just to be clear, the venue was not some crypto-fascist group using the word “Republican” to lend legitimacy to their vague name—this is the seat of the GOP in New York City… hosting someone who has argued that blacks are incompatible with whites, who is the leader of a hate group that celebrates fascist leaders like Augusto Pinochet. This relationship between the political establishment and street level fascist groups is accelerating.

Rebel Girl: Which may be what motivated the vandals who, early Friday morning, glued the locks to the Metropolitan Republican Club’s building, broke its windows, and left two large anarchist circle-A’s spraypainted on the doors. They also left behind a communiqué, part of which reads,

“Tonight, we put the Republican Party on notice, in defiance to the policy of mass misery they have championed. The US government has established concentration camps around the country for Latino people, shamelessly murders black people, and continues its war machine that has slaughtered Muslim people with impunity for decades. The so-called “Land of the Free” leads the world in incarceration rates per capita, all the while profiteering in the new plantation within the prison walls. While these atrocities persist unabated, the Metropolitan Republican Club chose to invite a hipster-fascist clown to dance for them, content to revel in their treachery against humanity. The Republican Party, joined by their spineless partners-in-crime, The Democrats, institute a policy of domestic and foreign terror felt the world over.”

Clara: And boy were they right about how spineless the Democrats are. The Republican Club called on the Democrats to denounce the QUOTE “political violence” of the broken windows and graffitied doors, and the democrats followed suit… issuing an official statement that says, “New York Democrats have zero tolerance for violence in our political system and condemn this latest act of vandalism.”

Rebel Girl: Wait, this is absurd… the Republicans invited the leader of a group that brags about beating up leftists to re-enact a POLITICAL ASSASSINATION, and the Democrats are denouncing some spraypaint and broken windows as violence?

Clara: Are you surprised?

Rebel Girl: No, I’m pissed off. Especially because predictably, as about 30 or so Proud Boys left the event inside the GOP Club, they ganged up on three anti-fascist counterdemonstrators, shouted “faggot” and “kill him” at them, and beat them even as they were on the ground. The only people arrested—

Clara: Wait, let me guess, the cops didn’t arrest any Proud Boys, but they did arrest the three people who got beat up?

Rebel Girl: Bingo. The three were initially charged with FELONIES for allegedly trying to knock a MAGA hat off somebody, but thankfully since then the charges have been reduced to misdemeanors and they’ve been released from jail on their own recognizance.

In the following couple of days, the governor and mayor called for arrests of those on the Proud Boys’ side, and a handful have been arrested, but during the violence the police just stood by. Fox News even showed footage of Proud Boy violence while implying that the acts were being perpetrated by Antifa. As It’s Going Down reports, “Fox News… reported the incident in its reverse, implying sword-wielding antifa laid siege to the venue. Even with all the power of the State and fascist meathead gangs, the Right is still terrified of us.”

Clara: I don’t know if the right is truly “terrified” of us. I think that kind of reporting from Fox is purposefully disingenuous. It works for them either way—either Fox-watching police are fooled into believing anti-fascists are always the aggressors, or, a worse and much more likely scenario is that police who ideologically support groups like the Proud Boys can use that kind of disingenuous but widespread reporting as an excuse for standing by while Proud Boys carry on with their assaults. Right wing media, the police, and street level fascists all depend on and benefit each other in this strategy.

As a statement from the Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council in New York states, “we must rebuff liberal and centrist calls for FBI and NYPD investigations or prosecutions. No arm of the state will serve meaningful justice in this situation, especially when the whole damn system is rotten to its core. Anti-fascist doxxing campaigns fulfill the very role that the NYPD is being called upon to perform. We don’t need to rely on cops to intervene, we can—and will—do it ourselves. We keep us safe. While we would find a prosecution comically entertaining, we request that the governor and any other momentary sympathizers furnish us with the conditions to actually fight fascism: abolish the police, and let us get to work.”

Photos and video of the assault on Friday have been circulated widely on social media, which has aided anti-fascists in doxxing the Proud Boys involved. There’s a good chance our listeners have seen it already, but we caught up with an anti-fascist who was there to hear more about what happened off-camera and what lessons can be taken from Friday night.

Hey. What happened at the demonstration against Gavin McInnes Friday night?

Anonymous Antifascist: So, Gavin McInnes was doing his usual nonsense and afterwards his Proud Boys were heard, when they were exiting the Metropolitan Republican Club, that they were ready to swing, you know, the usual violent garbage we can expect from them. The police initially sort of forced them off the blocks where the club was, and pretty much did an escort for them as they were sort of parading around a couple blocks further down. Which is not what they usually do to leftists protesters, as an aside. Then they encountered some comrades who got a little separate from the group because it was a little confusing what was happening at the time and then an altercation happened.

I don’t want to comment too much about it because there’s an ongoing investigation. A lot of people have probably already seen videos so, what sort of ended up happening is that these comrades were basically gang-beaten, 30 on 3, by these Proud Boys. There were actually a few NYPD cops who were there but they sort of just stood by and watched all this happened, and then later this guy, this doofus Proud Boy, started crying about how he was mugged and has his ID stolen and all this other junk, and so of course the NYPD immediately arrested the three people he pointed out as to have been alleged to have done this. But there’s actually a video going around on social media with him bragging about how cool it was to punch people and do all sorts of violent things.

Doofus Proud Boy: I did smash some dude out there. Giggle. It was absolutely insane, it was a good time.

Anonymous Antifascist: So it’s a little unclear how much of a victim he is exactly.

Clara: Fascists like to think in terms of victory and defeat, and they use videos like the one of the group beating on Friday as recruitment tools. In what ways can anti-fascists can also organize around high profile fascist violence like this?

Anonymous Antifascist: Honestly, I don’t think that countering their narrative is going to work. They’re not going to look at any video we put out and go, “Oh okay, that’s what really happened.” The only way to really engage with this is to prevent their videos from going out in the first place, or just not givin them the content—just starve them of the content they’re looking for.

Clara: Are there any tactical lessons that can be taken away from Friday night?

Anonymous Antifascist: Again, the most important thing is that more people need to show up. One of the things is that we were roughly even numbered with the Proud Boys, to the people who showed up to the Metropolitan Republican Club, and that was a problem. More people need to come out if you don’t want to see this kind of violence. Having people in the streets is so important. Of course, not everybody could come out. People have illnesses, or they’re caretakers, but if you have the time it would have been more important to be there than anywhere else.

The other thing is just that we do need to talk about how we’re acting on the streets. There are different things that you could do, for example, like just thinking about Friday, this demonstration was called for by a Workers World Party front group. So, there was a very ragtag mix of people, and some people with more or less understanding of tactics and how the NYPD acts, and how they’re willing to engage with police or with people on the street.

It was very confusing, for example, when the police moved the Proud Boys out of the club and some people who were a little further down the block didn’t know where they went, or what was even really going on. So when the altercations were happening, most of the crowd was nowhere nearby, which is one of the reasons why a 30 on 3 situation could happen, because there wasn’t anyone else who could run up to try to help out.

So, probably making sure that there’s always scouts, or people around who are feeding information to the larger group would be very important. And definitely separating out of the group is always a somewhat bad idea because they will engage on 30 on 3 beatdowns. Those are the kind of people they are.

Clara: Thank you so much for speaking with us.

Rebel Girl: Proud Boys also assaulted anti-fascists in Portland, Oregon this weekend, and we caught up with a comrade there to hear what happened.

What happened Saturday?

Portland Antifascist: So what happened was there was a vigil for Patrick Kimmons, who was shot by the Portland Police a couple weeks ago, and Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys decided to have what they were calling a “flash march” to that vigil. It was an obvious provocation. They met downtown, with about a hundred people, and they went to the vigil and there were antifascists there protesting them. the police pushed them back and then they kinda just stood across the street and there was some taunting going back and forth for a while. At some point somebody burned a flag and a Patriot Prayer guy ran in and snatched the flag and then there was some fighting that happened there. Then they left and they started marching north and they got to a bar called Kelly’s Olympian, which is where a group of antiracist skinheads had been kinda hanging out and they saw the antiracist skinheads and turned off course and went to them. Prior to that there was a lot more antiracist skinheads there, but Gibson and Patriot Prayer had made a threat to go to a known bar in town that supports antifascist concerts and events so a lot of the skinheads left and went to go defend that bar and there was like maybe five left. The Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer confronted those skinheads and basically just ran in and started hitting ‘em and it turned into a good fight and some more reinforcements came running in and then it went around the corner. I think there’s a video going around that people seen around a construction area where they’re stomping somebody in the head, like twenty of ‘em, it was – it was pretty crazy. Um, and then it kind of dispersed from there.

Rebel Girl: Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer and other fash seem to like to use these kinds of videos to recruit with. Do you have an opinion on how to responsibly engage these kinds of videos on social media?

Portland Antifascist: June 30th in Portland was also very indicative to that same behavior to the Proud Boys. Patriot Prayer, ya know, they did a lot of violence there too. They came in, the police stood back. Um, ya know, we don’t wanna forget that this isn’t just something new that happened this weekend, like they’ve been doing this for a while. Whenever they can, they’re coming in hard like that. When it comes down to sharing, what the Proud Boys do is they only share the clips of them getting that punch or they’ll manipulate those videos to make it look like “oh, we’re-” ya know, to play the victim like “we’re the good guys and they came after us,” but what they’re not showing is the beginning of everything. That’s the kind of stuff we need to show, like it was very clear when they came up to Kelly’s Olympian there was a guy standing there and he had his hands in his pocket and they punched him, then the fighting happened. Those are the videos that we would show that kind of expose the Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer for what they are. They’re out looking for a fight and that’s why they come, it’s the sole purpose of why they’re out in the streets, is to fight leftists. I don’t like showing the fight, that one clip over and over again where twenty of their guys are on one of our guys that they’re using for recruitment. It’s already going around, we don’t really need to push that stuff, but showing the lead up to it? Kind of takes that narrative away.

Rebel Girl: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Portland Antifascist: think that one thing to add, here’s something that came up yesterday, going back to the last real big Patriot Prayer rally where they said they’re bringing guns and Alex Jones got on his show and said antifascists are bringing guns. Well, just yesterday it came out that the police found Patriot Prayer/Proud Boy associated snipers on the roof that day and never told the mayor or the public. This just came out yesterday, and they were up on rooftops with long rifles and weapon caches during the August 4th rally where the police turned on not just antifascists but a very broad community of a thousand people that showed up to protest them and started indiscriminately firing flashbangs at peoples’ heads, but they knew that Patriot Prayer had snipers on roofs with caches of weapons and never said anything. Those are things that people need to realize, that the state is in collusion with this, that they’re both fighting for the same kind of system. That was something that was kind of shocking.

Many observers now wish to write off the alt-right as a media bugbear, a “movement where thirty people with cheap tiki torches can seem like an army in the echo chamber of social media,” as a Times journalist recently put it. I am more inclined to the argument Leonard Zeskind offers in his magisterial Blood and Politics. “Convinced by the history of the early civil rights movement that small groups of determined individuals could influence and change the world around them,” he writes, “I believed that racists could turn the wheels of history as well as antiracists could.” This holds true only if the conditions are right for radical change. Which, in the US, they are.

Persistent economic and political crisis in the United States, amid a long downturn for wages, job security, and basic human dignity, promise no happy return to the political center anytime soon. The alt-right did not emerge in response to the stupidity of marginal internet liberalism, as Angela Nagle suggests in Kill All Normies. Rather it is a response to decades of decline in standards of living for working people, amid the proliferation of unemployment and meaningless, dead-end jobs. Moreover, no coherent leftist movement exists through which everyday people can make sense of this world and collaborate across lines of race and gender to build a better one. As a result, many of those who reject the status quo blame their problems on immigrants, feminism, trans rights, and other bogeymen, rather than the capitalist social relations from which the problems facing working people inevitably proceed.

The real threat today is not that small pockets of white-supremacist ideologues exist. It’s that their vision of society might become the only one that makes sense to ordinary white people, for whom reality increasingly seems like a battle between racially-defined interest groups for slivers from a shrinking pie. These same working-class white people face a dilemma as old as our country itself: whether to choose to be human, or choose to be white. One path leads to human liberation, another to planetary ruin. Who is helping them give their problems a name?

David Neiwert, October 30

Having it Both Ways

Centrist dogmatism and the corporate media’s see-no-evil syndrome

Even after last week’s attempted bomb attacks and synagogue massacre, the centrists and their defenders keep circling. National Review editor Jonah Goldberg reaffirmed the conventional wisdom that both sides are responsible for the political violence. Rep. Steve Scalise, the victim of a shooting by an unhinged liberal who attacked an informal congressional baseball practice in 2017, was brought forth to remind everyone that “the left” can be violent too: “I wish both sides would be speaking out about it when it happens on either side.”

Actually, both sides do speak out about it, and deliver all kinds of official statements denouncing violence when it occurs. Bernie Sanders made a speech on the Senate floor denouncing Scalise’s shooter, who had once volunteered for Sanders’s presidential campaign. Trump has made a couple of official denunciations of the week’s right-wing violence.

The problem is that such “speaking out” does about as much good as thoughts and prayers when it comes to preventing the repetition of such violence in the future. Taking the domestic terror threat seriously would mean addressing the systemic aspects of political violence and squarely examining the ideologies that produce such violence—ideologies such as the rabid anti-Semitism and immigrant-baiting displayed by Robert Bowers, or the seemingly unquenchable hard-right rage of MAGA bomber Cesar Sayoc.

No one is doing that because almost everyone in media, it seems, is wedded to their both-sides-do-it narrative. To take just one among countless egregious examples, the editors of the New York Times responded to this month’s Manhattan thuggery by running a puff piece about Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes. Instead of treating McInnes’s ugly career as a deformation of America’s aspirational values, the Times instead approached him as yet another charismatic and colorful spokesman for the hard right in the process of moving from the fringe to the mainstream. This sick normalization of predatory street violence is only thinkable under the narrative dispensation of both-siderism—in this zero-sum universe, even mob mayhem becomes a form of savvy self-marketing, one that’s designed to swamp out allegedly similar tendencies on the radical left. The evidence now clearly shows that no multiple dose of reality is going to pry this spurious narrative template away from the mainstream press.

The problem is this: both sides don’t do it. Not when it comes to political violence in America.

It’s true that there has been an increase in far-left street violence since Trump’s election. However, the vast majority of such action has come in the context of deliberate attempts at violent provocation and confrontation by the radical right—the sort of tactical street-level violence that’s made the Proud Boys a household name.

Both sides are not organizing gangs of violent street brawlers, mostly outsiders, to march through the streets of cities where their opponents are politically dominant in the hope of provoking confrontations with inflammatory language. Only one side is doing that.

Both sides are not driving cars into crowds and murdering protesters. Only one side has done that.

Both sides are not busily fantasizing about a coming civil war between the right and left, nor arguing that such a conflict might be desirable. On the right, this has become an obsession, particularly among the Alex Jones/Infowars/“Qanon” contingent. But then, the idea of a civil war has been popular on the right since at least the 1990s, thanks to Rush Limbaugh. Again, only one side seems to hopefully anticipate such violence.

Both sides are not stocking up large caches of weapons and ammo in their homes in anticipation of a large-scale conflict, either. Only one side has been doing that.

Re: The “Alternative Right"

On Gab, domestic terrorist Robert Bowers engaged with several influential alt-right figures

Bowers shared content produced by virulently antisemitic personality and alt-right influencer Jared Wyand 15 times between February and May, including one direct interaction. A sampling of the content shows themes that would also appear in Bowers’ later Gab activity:

Why is there a \"DACA Debate\" topic? Why are people allowing a debate over whether millions of people who invaded our county will be allowed to cancel out our votes u give democrats indefinite one party rule? People who’ve been stealing $115 billion from us a year. This is not a debate. This is a red line and act of war if you have any dignity in your body.

In one chilling post, Wyand argues that “we’re being invaded” and “our people are being completely destroyed.” He urges action “by any means necessary” to stop it. Bowers’ final post echoes those sentiments exactly.

Can we all agree that we’re being invaded? An actual orchestrated overthrow of our countries that is on track to succeed? And that our people and culture will be (are being) completely destroyed? And that it’s on us to stop this by any means necessary? And the people telling us we can’t are the people orchestrating overthrow? Are we all in agreement?
