There is a big cultural gap between purchasing expertise and the more informal barter / apprenticeship relationships that keep rural communities alive. You have to learn a bit of everything and take responsibility for a great deal of your environment. In the 'burbs, your lawn is a movie set and your roads have a customer service hotline, but out where things are abandoned enough to be free, well ... you need to learn a lot.
Jump into it headlong and enjoy it. If you're on twitter, J Z Ellis is doing great work on engaging with the social aspects of our collapse.
If you can reliably, repeatably teach the de-alienation of labor x production, you have a program no mere ideology can compete against.
