Aspen, Para-Medical Emergencies and More

Postby Gouda » Fri Jul 07, 2006 10:45 am

I am just now starting to get a little freaked out by the recent flurry of Aspen correspondence between para-medical and para-political happenings.

Quote:
Colin Powell taken ill at Clinton dinner

Friday, July 7, 2006 Posted: 1159 GMT (1959 HKT)

ASPEN, Colorado (AP) -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell was briefly hospitalized early Friday after he fell ill at a restaurant where he was dining with former President Clinton and others, police said.

Aspen police Sgt. Yes, HST also took his leave from the Aspen area. Of course I checked if it was Dr. Kurtzman who also examined Hunter after his death, but no. Question: who is it, a bigwig Saudi methinks, that has a huge estate near Thompson's cabin out there?

The Aspen Festival has been great so far: startlingly fresh new thinking confirming all my preconceived notions! The tutorial called "Illness as a Catalyst for Spiritual Transformation" could not have been more timely, what with Ken and all; and even moreso since many of us have come down with a weird para-flu-like sickness, just like Colin did: blogs.theatlantic.com/asp...-High.html &
blogs.theatlantic.com/asp...-Eyes.html

So here is where we are going after Enron, where our transformation lies: for example, yesterday I attended a session on Global Dynamics where Colin Powell called for Guantanamo to be closed (before he and many others succumbed to “alpine attitude *sic* sickness”) - blogs.theatlantic.com/asp...o-Now.html - later, I listened to the wisdom of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, one of Tibet’s highest incarnate lamas, at the “Ruling Your World" session. I can add that the seminars on US education (sponsored by Boeing) and on the Environment (sponsored by GE) were brilliant. Can't wait to hear what old Karl Rove has to say on Sunday. (I wonder where he has been these last few days? No one has been able to corner him for a drink.)

What else am I picking up on the thin wind here? Well, there seems to be heavy support for third, centrist parties and leaders to emerge to bridge the growing party divide: blogs.theatlantic.com/asp...ident.html

All in all, this is much better than this year's staid, crusty old Bilderberger meeting. And this one is openly covered by the Atlantic Monthly:

blogs.theatlantic.com/aspen/

James Fallows, moderator:

Quote:
The View From the Moderator's Chair

According to the program, I moderated two sessions today: "The Moral Consequences of Economic Growth" and "Does Globalization Undermine Democracy?" But "moderate" is the wrong verb for my role in the first, at any rate. This featured Harvard's Ben Friedman talking about his new book of the same title. It argues that we are right to be so much preoccupied with economic growth, not only because growth brings material progress but at least as much because it is an engine of social, political and even moral advance. It is an unusual perspective, and I wondered how it would be received by Aspen's green-tinged liberal-leaning attenders. They loved it. So did I: During Ben's presentation I "moderated" by smiling benignly as he did all the work, persuasively setting out his argument, listening attentively to questions, and answering them carefully. It was quite a performance. (Ben's, I mean.) The book is excellent too.

Edited by: Gouda at: 7/8/06 3:33 am
