Anyone familiar with these reports? THE PHANTOM CLOWNS In his must-read book, Mysterious America, fortean researcher and cryptozoologist Loren Coleman includes a chapter concerning a wave of "Phantom Clown" sightings that occurred during the Spring of 1981. According to news and rumors of the time, children in various areas of the country were being terrorized by people dressed as clowns at playgrounds and school yards. These "clowns" reportedly tried to frighten the children into getting into a mysterious van. These sightings spanned over a thousand miles and covered at least six major cities. No one was arrested, though there was at least one case where there was a police pursuit, and as far as I know there were no successful abductions. <a href="http://home.earthlink.net/~cyclonepub/clowns.html" target="top">cyclonepub/clowns</a> In May-June of 1981, phantom clowns with pictures of the Devil on the front of their costumes chased children and tried to lure them into vans. Reports were coming in across America, from Boston, Pittsburgh, Omaha, and Kansas City. Huh? Hadn't heard of it; 1981 itself was a bit of a chimera, so, s'pose a few phantom clowns w/ devils silk-screened on the front of their costumes runnin' around trying to scare children into a waitng van would be apropos. not familiar, as in never heard of them - but intuition tells me this is the same m.o. as the 'fake social worker' scenario that transpired throughout the midlands/north of england - extensively reported by the fortean times at the time (for my money,whilst still a subscriber, the fortean times was co-opted several years ago, and the 2 founders whilst still fundamental have allowed(?) a new editor - but even before that - by a year or two, i'd swear the editorial policy just seemed to get a bit 'too' sceptical...... dozens of reports of couples knocking on doors...spurious claims to being local council 'social/child protection' officials.....trying to wrtest children from mothers home alone......entire thing stank of satanic kidnapping attempts

Jesus MFing Christ, I knew someone who had been raped by a clown who broke into his house and he had been forced to testify at the trial and was harassed by neighborhood kids and I dated his sister and she had been too young to remember but had nightmares involving the Stephen King movie It as an adult. The rape would have been about 1981. I feel nervous.
