That's a clue.
It was already blowing up on twitter, tumblr, reddit and 4chan before the media latched onto it. Due to the conservative nature of facebook, that site lagged generally alongside the media. I think there's something to be said for their "choice" of hyping this particular story over, say, Nazi war criminals in South America. The media's coverage of Kony almost had more to do with the nature of viral media than it did up until that white kid smoked PCP and beat off in public. And it had taken the media at least two days to catch up on the story after I first heard about it (to be fair, searching "Kony" on RI in those early days returned a ton of hits going back many years, for what it's worth. I had actually recognized the name and had some context for the conflict thanks to this place).

I don't like this trend. Video is very hard to watch, btw, could be triggering. It's not funny at any point.
A Florida Atlantic University student flew into a rage during an evolution class, threatening to kill her professor and her fellow students.
WARNING: Some language below may not be suitable for everyone.
At one point in a video of the incident posted to YouTube, student Jonatha Carr screams, "I will kill the fuck out of you."
University Press, the school newspaper, reports that the altercation started after Carr repeatedly asked her professor, Stephen Kajiura, "How does evolution kill black people?"
Kajiura tried to explain that evolution doesn't kill anyone and that's when Carr got even more emotional, eventually slamming the palm of her hand into the forehead of a fellow student.
In the YouTube description, FAU student Rachel Bustamante, describes the incident as, the "craziest thing I've ever seen."
Students and staff eventually tried to get Carr to leave the classroom and police were later called, according to the Miami New Times.
The paper also reported that police used a taser on Carr and that she was later sent to a hospital for observation.

Hugh, I'm not buying the significance of the fact that the mainstream press hopped on this story early. The video was, I believe, the hottest in youtube history; that's a story. There's certainly more than meets the eye with the whole thing, but... "What if the American media was about to be exposed as using 'child warriors?' " The media using "child warriors"? Wtf? Can't we just address the geo-strategic realities and likely intelligence connections of this group, without getting ridiculous?

Gotchya. Right, she must have been on something- but who knows what. Could be just coke or meth, with that straight-up violent behavior. But Jason Russell had something wackier going on, which is why I would lean towards something like PCP.

Saying it was witchcraft makes the best story. Russell targeted one mean, evil motherfucker, and his breakdown is a retribution I would have scripted. It's almost too funny* to be coincidental.

Actually an interesting notion. The person who is possibly the most interesting friend I've ever had in my life had spent a lot of time in Africa researching exactly these sorts of things, in an extremely scholarly way, and she herself has experienced such magic first-hand. She says it's quite real over there! Except she managed to get away from one particularly sticky evil spirit that he been cursed upon her by traveling all the way back to the United States. So his San Diego freak-out may not have been attributed to that, although I wouldn't put anything past the spirit world!
