That is odd, except, as was pointed out earlier, above, a computer can run off an operating system (Linux) on a thumb drive. If that was the case, then the question remains, where is the thumb drive? Being much smaller, it's easier to dispose and harder to find.

Just spitballing but...there is the possibility that he thought the cameras and shooting from the room next door would somehow buy him just a little more time so he could make sure to take his own life instead of being mowed down...The missing HD is still sus. as F though...but hey, "it doesn't matter..."

As alluded by Elvis/others, a laptop can run from a bootable USB (a flavor of Linux, for example) without requiring a hard drive, but it's highly improbable that the USB wouldn't have been found by now.
Usage of USB is the only option that makes sense in this scenario (other than the premise that whoever killed him -- the federales or other -- removed the drive from the laptop moments after killing him. It's relatively easy to remove hard drives from laptops, unless it's a newer 'slim' version that would require taking most of the laptop apart, or solid state drives soldered onto the board/circuitry, in which case it can't be removed) .
Why bring a laptop to the hotel room with no means to boot it up/use it? Makes no sense.
In short: either he used a bootable USB (but if he did, how have they not found it yet?) or his killers took the drive reported as 'missing'.
Shady in any scenario.

I would think the laptop (inclusive of hard drive) would have been hoovered up with all the other available evidence at the event scene.
The hard drive may have never been lost.
The story of a "lost drive" is a good way of furthering the narrative that "we may never know why he did it"

Indeed, and more plausible than a laptop in the hotel room with a "missing" drive.

The theory that Paddock was killed by law enforcement is disproved by video/audio evidence assembled by the New York Times. In the video posted upthread you hear law enforcement taking down the door and entering the room with no shots fired afterwards.
I’d like to know if Paddock was tech-savvy and paranoid about being surveilled in which case the missing hard drive wouldn’t be incongruous. Many rampage shooters left notes or manifestos but it seems he was doing the opposite—trying to obscure his reasoning and motivations.
There was a note left on the table in the hotel room. Could his reasoning be something that the FBI sees as so inflammatory that they want to keep it concealed from the public? ...just speculation...there could have been anything...a grocery list maybe.... on that paper.

As noted before, supposedly on that paper were calculations made with pencil about the best angles to shoot people from the room's windows.

Thanks 0_0. Don’t know how I missed that (very disturbing) report.

No problem, that information about the calculations on the paper was disclosed by someone from the canine unit if i remember correctly.

Yes, here it is:
They said a piece of paper found in the shooter’s hotel room had calculations scrawled across it determining ballistic trajectories that would help the gunman maximise his death toll. He killed 58 people and injured hundreds of others in the massacre. Officer David Newton, from the Las Vegas Police Department’s K-9 unit, said he noticed the paper on the shooter’s nightstand, not far from one of the windows Paddock had smashed with a hammer before firing into the unsuspecting crowd below with high-powered semi-automatic rifles.

Parsing through the above article (linked earlier in this thread), the authors allude to more than one computer that may have been found in the room:
On Wednesday, information emerged that adds to the complexity of the case. Mr. Paddock apparently removed the hard drive from at least one computer found in his room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, according to a law enforcement official.
Indeed, just a bit further down in the article, there's this:
Suspects in mass shootings typically leave long trails of clues to justify their actions, writing manifestoes or posting on social media. But Mr. Paddock did not appear to do so, leaving investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to pore over his computers and cellphones in the bureau’s lab in Quantico, Va., for weeks.
So the Feds have been
poring over numerous recovered media assets associated with Paddock for
weeks. This 'missing hard drive' issue isn't as dramatic as initially suspected if numerous other electronic assets have been retrieved and analyzed.
By now they'd have substantial information on web browsing history, recovered deleted files, etc.
Also: given the news of his brother's arrest, analysis of his brother's devices -- computers, mobile devices, etc -- have surely been initiated in earnest as well, which almost certainly includes analysis of communications/exchanges between the brothers.
Moreover, by now the Feds must have subpoenaed service providers (social media, web/mail hosting services associated with either/both brothers), indexed and searched through such records for noteworthy content.
(Indeed, It's possible analysis of 'shooter' Paddock's available electronic media may be what led to the brother's arrest, though this is speculative absent further information.)
The results of the above analysis is unlikely to ever make it into the public domain.

FBI Says "It Doesn't Matter".......because FBI knows so much more than anyone
if anyone thinks that Paddock was not on the FBI's radar ....they have not been paying attention
I am sure they will get to telling us all about Paddock right after they let us in on Tsarnaev...and Whitey Bulger....and JFK for that matter

Saw it the first time you posted it ... I think we're all jaded enough to not feel the need to respond to it ... though I see that SLAD did.
