? I guess they'll need a universal printer!

When will it be uploaded into the Hayden Planetarium's projector? To zoom in here or there would be great fun and the details will fascinate many for years to come

If printed at full resolution, the researchers say, this photograph would be one and a half miles long.

Damn, they must print it. Then they can say: "In this particular case, the map is the territory."

That is some photo, Cordelia.

Haitian mother protecting her son from Dominican police, has more balls than all the men in the picture combined.

Her face and her posture. She's just completely there with her whole self. And the figures around her make it look like an allegorical painting.

I hope to god she and the boy survived.

Yeah, she did. So did her son. At the end of the day, they showered & changed their costumes and were told to come back the next morning so they could wrap up the scene.

Mr. Rigorous

In actuality, the image is a still from the 2013 Dominican drama film Cristo Rey, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival that same year. Written and directed by Leticia Tonos, Cristo Rey is the story of love, loyalty and conflict in the face of ethnicity, race and politics.

Why the eyeroll-smiley? Why the gratuitous sarcasm? What's so unrigorous about hoping someone survived?

Ah, I see, it's a movie. How disappointing. That's why it looked like an allegorical painting. I had originally written "It's such a perfect image it looks almost staged" but then I deleted the line. Silly, unrigorous me.

Anyway: Thank you for setting me right with your trademark humility and generosity, Mr. Whom. You're boss.

About the eyeroll Mac, reading your many criticisms of commentary offered elsewhere about certain posters' cognitive and research capacities, I felt it more than appropriate.

Also, I allowed your lame excuse a pass on Trump not wanting the CIA to protect him.

Not interested in arguing with you, Mac, so have your say, but don't expect another response.

You want to pretend that everything served up is equally delicious. I tend to the view that it's worth distinguishing between crap and caviar. Let's agree to differ. Bon appetit.

"Lame excuse"? - Damn, I should have guessed that was it. How unrigorous of me (again). I should have realised that you had been seething about that all day. You tried to patronise me, again quite gratuitously, and you fell flat on your face. And I didn't crow, unlike you, nor did I subject you to any eyeroll-smileys. You just hate being proven wrong. You regard it as a personal insult.

Not interested in arguing with you

Of course you are. You're just not interested in losing. You could have simply offered that photo-information to me and the board (and I would have thanked you for it sincerely), but, no, you just had to get that little gratuitous dig in at me. Fine. Be boss. Enjoy.

(Jaysus, all this grief because I wanted to thank Cordelia for a very powerful image.)

I didn't know, when I posted the image, that it was from a film. But if I had, I would have posted it anyway because it's just so powerful and an image I've needed probably all my life. I had the same response Mac did, that I hoped for the best for them. The expression on her face is how I would more imagine Judith's, when beheading Holofernes, rather than as depicted in all those allegorical paintings. The picture is emblematic of the rage a mother could show when her child is threatened; if it's from a performance by an actress, so what? If it elicits a powerful response (as many forms of art do) like empathy, all the better.

:wallhead: Please, you guys, you're both too good for the bickering!

It was indeed an excellent choice, Cordelia. As I said, I have no wish to bicker with Mac or anyone, really. But it does get on one's nerves seeing someone criticize others for their lack of rigor in searching out factual evidence. Mac's asking about the woman's wellbeing resulted in my conducting a single search to locate the original source. Instead of taking this minimal effort that he complains others do not take to have their questions answered, he, like they asked instead.

My original post is above on this page, as are Mac's two consecutive responses. We cross-posted between my edit to add the movie details, and during that time he did conduct a search and prepared another response, which would have been sufficient:

Anyway: Thank you for setting me right with your trademark humility and generosity, Mr. Whom.

After reading my edit, Mac felt more insults were necessary. This is simply how he chooses to make the world a better place. Tell me, Cordelia, did you find any sort of insult in my comment? Calling him Mr. Rigorous along with the eyeroll? Simply an observation and merely meant as harmless criticism.

If anyone wants to criticize another, they should not repeat the behavior they just criticized. Because they might be criticized if they do.

What a piece of work you are.

Iamwhomiam wrote:After reading my edit, Mac felt more insults were necessary.

No. I read your edit for the first time half-an-hour ago. You went back and made that edit a full six (in figures: 6) minutes after I had replied to it yesterday. And you reveal yet again that you regard disagreement as a personal insult and refutation as an unforgivable humiliation.

it does get on one's nerves seeing someone criticize others for their lack of rigor in searching out factual evidence.

By "one's" you mean yours, so why not say it? And why on earth should that kind of criticism - read your own line again - get on your nerves? Anything Goes, that's your scientific and scholarly method. Except in the rare cases when it suits your own peculiar personal purposes to crow at someone for an alleged lack of rigour.

Have this one for free, Whom: It's another example of my shameful lack of rigour, from almost exactly a decade ago:

The Mandelbrot Set in a 13th-Century Manuscript

The thread's still open, so you still have the chance to further the cause of science, scholarship, and disinterested rigour by adding an eyeroll-smiley and a sarcastic "Mr Rigorous". Enjoy.
