God no. As someone who seems to have acquired the reputation of being the Vlad the Impaler of Doom-WOO people, I wish to make it clear my main problem is not with Doom-WOO as such, which can be right or wrong or unknowable, but a) mystifications and vague generalized hidden controller theories for things that are actually well-known and b) what too often happens when an assertion that is clearly wrong or highly problematic is confronted, gently or not, by logic or fact: denial, ignoring, cries of censorship, and, inevitably, repetition without the least revision. (Even if I'm right, of course, it's a Sisyphean madness of mine to keep trying.)

I guess my most general problem is if there 30 threads on the same subject that weren't consolidated. That tends to bother me more with Doom-WOO than with, I dunno, CIA-killed-JFK? Mark me down as some kind of traditionalist.

Still, thanks for the compliment. I do try to pop in regularly to read posts. Good luck on your Ph.D.

Thank you!

I prefer the "View unread posts" link as that shows me what I haven't read yet. :thumbsup

Yes I second that, I was unaware of that feature - thanks Riddler :)

Vlad, you may be glad to know that your persistance, in it's way, has recently steered me from the path of Doom-WOO. Thanks.

Hmmmmmmmmm, what to make of it all?

I started reading the RI blog, circa 2005(?) 2006(?), simply because it was so interesting to me. Then I discovered this forum as I kept reading all info on conspiracy, NWO, UFO's, aliens, bigfoot, high crimes, et al. To be frank, I find all the political stuff kinda boring. I don't know how one policy affects another in the grand scheme of things, I don't know how or why Harper's government make the decisions they do or what Obama's policies mean. Not that I am averse to doing a little reading on it all.

Anyway, I like to learn about the weird, the strange. What about all those clowns in vans appearing trying to abduct children? Did The Finders turn out to be just a small cult with no high connections in politics or world government? One of the threads I am reading now is about Dr. Strangelove. I go there to read about how the film is showing us 'how the world really works' and it's that kind of stuff I came here for.

As for the name-calling and what not, I do try to keep to the original post subject and not take anything personally (we are kind of faceless here) but try to remember there is a human being behind those words. I don't know, sometimes people try to muddy the waters just to make them look deep.

Peace and love to y'all.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff comes back before too long and slams us with the most jaw dropping mind bending yet elegant blog entry in years...shit is getting so volatile and weird(weirder than usual) in 2014, it'd be so ripe for a Well-ingesque commentary

As you can see i have been here for a while but have to admit I do feel intimidated by the 'usual crowd' that post - take that as a compliment as most of you seem light years ahead in your intellect. I only found the forum when Jeff stopped blogging (such a shame - and maybe why there is very little new blood in the forums) and find the subjects on GD either too political, or contain massive threads that I don't have time to read through, even this i only got to p5. I enjoy high strangeness, a bit of woo and unusual things and these topics seem to be in short supply - what drew me to RI initially was Jeff's writing but the forum now , imo, doesn't reflect what the blog use to cover.#

I've been meaning to comment on this thread for a few days.

In fact, I had a good old fashioned drunken ramble with my wife last Friday about the myriad reasons I spend time here, and I took a bunch of notes scribbled onto an envelope that I have in front of me at this moment.

I can't make much sense of any of the notes, other than (as one that comes from a family of 11), this place is more like family than any other place I've been a part of: Sure, we'll call each other assholes, and it gets out of hand from time to time; but in the end, all of that shit is forgotten (I hope) and we really do love each other, insofar as one can come to love an anonymous group of strangers on the internet.

Riddle me this: When was the last time you actually made a monetary contribution in order to keep a website functional? Because, in my memory, that has only happened once with me, and it was here, and there's a damn good reason for that: as Luther has noted, this place is a resource, and much more than a social network, though it functions as one as well.

I don't make a ton of money, and I don't think many of us here do, but when the call went out, we responded. And that's because we don't want this place to disappear. It's too important to us. As far as I'm concerned, that was by far the most worthwhile hundred bucks I've spent in a long time.

My two cents, FWIW

So, basically, bring to the board what you want to see. I'd like to see more Africa threads and more civil and informed interaction, so I'll do that. Those who want more woo - bring it! I always enjoy those threads, even though I seldom have anything worthwhile to add.

And I'd be willing to have a go at moderating, although I'm more of a 'have at it' kind of person and I don't go near a computer at weekends. Let me know if I can help Wombat.

My ex referred to anything that I did on the computer as "just go play on the Internet, with your RI buddies". I took total offense to the word "play". A lot of people don't get "us". It would really be nice to see and read Jeff again. Perhaps in the near future Willow can do something about this.

Sorry I'm missing your fiesta in Seattle, Willow! It ain't no bowl of cherries where I am right now!

But, those who remain are an "us". So here we are. . .
