Wasted Country

I know, right? The world owes her a debt of gratitude just for her stalwart representation of the right-hand path in the onstage world of David Bowie during the wilderness of the ill-advised Reeves Gabrels years. But she's got talent, too, as it happens. Were I she, I don't know that I would regret going the route I went, for reasons of financial security. However, it does seem a little unfair that proving you have enough star quality for it to be just as perceptible when you're standing five feet away from David Bowie as when you're not is so much more lucrative than just having it. So I'm rooting for her future solo career, personally. I doubt Mr. Bowie's going to be doing any more major touring, anyway. And if he ever needs to rub her cute bald head while
singing an a propos line of "Rebel, Rebel" again, on special occasions or something, you know....They appear to have a sincerely affectionate and collegial relationship. I'm sure they'll be able to work something out. Although I'd far prefer to see them revisit
the revamped, soul-clapping arrangement myself.
I loved seeing him play with that line-up. That band got so good by the time they did the Five Boroughs shows, they were practically breathing as one. Which just has to have entailed a little personal sacrifice, given that it would have required (usually) five of them to go that extra mile while breathing for Earl Slick.
My Christmas list? I hadn't really started thinking about it yet. Why do you ask?

Radiohead - house of cards............
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8nTFjVm9sTQ
I don’t want to be your friend
I just want to be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine
Fall off the table and get swept under
Denial, denial
The infrastructure will collapse
From voltage spikes
Put your keys in the bowl
Kiss your husband goodnight
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I’ll do mine
Fall off the table and get swept under
Denial, denial
Denial, denial
(Your ears should be burning)

Boney M. Can't go wrong there, in my opinion.
Nor can one go wrong with Stephen Malkmus:

No decent versions of Vanessa From queens, sadly.
Keep Music Recorded, if the bastards can't play or sing, but write great songs, I say. Not likely to fit on a badge, that. But it's a great song.

Elvis - Something (1973)
Shirley Bassey - Something (1978)
Sinatra - Something (1985)
Dylan - Something (2002)
Because it's almost seven years since George died.
George Harrison - P2 Vatican Blues
Now how come nobody really noticed
Puff of white smoke knocked me out
The truth is hiding, lurking, banking

Try Some, Buy Some -- Ronnie Spector
Try Some, Buy Some -- George Harrison
Try Some, Buy Some -- David Bowie
That's in order of release. And since I doubt the writer himself would claim his was the definitive recording (Ronnie Spector's, of course; that should go w/o saying, but as I'm known to be a little irrational on the subject of Mr. Bowie, I'm taking out insurance just in case), may I also add:
Savoy Truffle -- George Harrison
I Need You --...I'm gonna credit this one to the Beatles, lead vocals and writing by George Harrison. Judgment call.
What Is Life -- George Harrison
Beware of Darkness -- George Harrison
---
We all know that "Something" was routinely introduced by Mr. Sinatra in concert as a "Lennon/McCartney classic," right? Because if we don't, we should, it being just one more reason to love not only George Harrison, but Mr. Sinatra, too.
