Getting rid of blatant trolls would completely solve the problem.
Letting 17breezes stay around is inexplicable and incredibly disruptive to the entire site.
You cannot possibly do more to prove yourself a troll than he has.
It boggles my mind that those who can't tolerate the trolls, i.e. me and Mac, are those scolded, where the troll skates, with the "viewpoint different from my own" firmly attached to his ugly ass.
Makes no sense whatsofuckingever.
If you don't like what happened on that thread, then make it a point to get rid of the troll.
Ishatar, well his meltdown was something else entirely. Which I discussed on that thread in what I thought was a reasonable and introspective way.
But I cannot tolerate war-crime-loving trolls. Nobody else should either.

Moderating isn't about judging popularity contests. Perhaps less evidently, trolling is more than simply posting contentious opinion.

The way this board is run became a serious concern to me several years ago.
Jeff's 'mod,' professorpan, was allowed to rampage with endless thread derailings and ad hominem attacks.
I appealed and appealed to Jeff to end the charade to no avail.
No illusions here about the tolerance and outright encouragement to certain trolls.

I don't have a problem with it. I imagine 17breezes will, eventually, hoist himself with his own petard. In the meantime, since the forum update there's been an amazing "ignore" function. Since breeze-dawg's posts are so content free I don't have to read them to respond to them anyway, and it makes my day easier. OTOH it took vigilant/apologydue hundreds of posts before he finally started dropping "Jewish banker" bombs and then made a reappearance.
Prof. pan could get out of line IMO, especially when people tended to think that woo-woo stuff was useless or didn't to support Obama, but I don't remember him banning or suspending anyone w/out cause. And frankly, HMWs, you're insane and you're still the only poster here who has a rule all to himself re: thread hijacking. Although that Bull Durham-Chewbacca post showed a touch of genius.
Jeff is pretty hands-off here. I'm okay with that, but then again, no one has ever fucked with--well, there have been one or two attempts, probably by the same person--me the way I imagine some others here get fucked with.

I just wish all posters could refrain from making slurs against the character of other posters, and start to engage with the written material in a more serious and adult manner.
OTOH it took vigilant/apologydue hundreds of posts before he finally started dropping "Jewish banker" bombs and then made a reappearance.
Prof. pan could get out of line IMO, especially when people tended to think that woo-woo stuff was useless or didn't to support Obama, but I don't remember him banning or suspending anyone w/out cause. I never saw any evidence that vigilant was anti semitic, although I grant I may be wrong about that. But unless you can substantiate that statement, its a slur. If anyone would really like to, they might pm me the reasons for him being banned, because I am curious. Of course, you don't have to.
And calling Hugh insane is also a slur, but one which has been repeated a million times on this board, so I daresay he is used to it.
But you know, slurs go on all the time around here. I myself have been slurred and I bloody well didnt like it one bit.
Less defamation of character and more adult, literate and intelligent discussion would be nice.
Perhaps we might have a mod that would encourage these things.

Nathan28's advice to ignore 17breeze's contentless drive by gibberish is worth following. Some people claim to see anti semitism where there is none, I have noticed. That's not to say it doesn't exist. I believe that a handful of folk with neo nazi or anti semitic affiliations or sympathies may have posted here, but they are easy to spot and don't stay long.
