This is a post about democracy, hardware hacking and how we successfully reprogrammed an electronic voting machine to play space invaders amongst other things...

..TL;DR, the device is not fit-for-purpose when used as an electronic voting system, however we feel it makes an excellent table top arcade system for playing classic video games.

Anybody else remember fifty years ago tonight? Most able-bodied boys and men of draft age (850,000) were pumping adrenaline and working up an honest sweat as they watched their fate unfold on live t.v.

1969...550,000 U.S. troops in Vietnam; the Tate–LaBianca murders; the world learned about the massacre at My Lai; Altamont happened, etc...50 years later the herd is medicated and under control (just killing each other), but wars' still waged and black men who pose any threat still killed.

In the previous century Jeremy Bentham had dreamt up a novel idea for a prison construction: a 'Panopticon'[*], built in a star shape with radiating wings..
[...]

.. importantly, the warders could oversee every wing from a central core...

[...]

Every prisoner had a cell to himself, with adequate washing facilities, which present‐day inmates of overcrowded prisons might envy. But they would not envy the prison regime, known as the ‘separate system’. It involved depriving a prisoner of all human contact; shutting him up in his cell except for brief exercise periods, masking his face, and forbidding him to speak. This compulsory silence was believed to lead to moral regeneration as the wretched prisoner contemplated his moral failings. There were, it had to be admitted, quite a few suicides.
*The core basis of this idea is that the prisoner need not be watched constantly, but if the prisoner felt that at any time he could be being watched, he would act as if he were.

Nice, I just don't get this idea that it's either conspiracy, or just history. Isn't there another way of looking at it? Isn't this what I've been arguing about for weeks now? I guess I'm just wasting my time, playing games on the Internet, same as everyone else. Right?

So it must be conspiracy, or history. There is no in between. It can't simply be a conspiracy to commit mass production.

Hadn't seen this, felt like it could use a comment:
Funny, that wasn't my experience at all. Not the before picture, or the after. I can understand what it is saying, of course, but nothing like that has ever happened to me. I feel bad that people actually end up in places like that. And I wonder what it is I did right to miss out on the sorry state of affairs depicted, or did I just get lucky. Or did they go wrong somewhere to end up there, or just get unlucky.

Or maybe what I went through wasn't "the occult." Sure felt like it, though. Probably just got lucky. But I feel bad that others didn't.
