When my Dad was seven, his great-grandad sat him down on his knee and told him about living through the Famine. He had lived through it, and wanted to make sure my Dad knew that it happened, in case 'anyone in the future tries to pretend it didn't'. He told of walking through areas where there were unburied emaciated dead for mile after mile after mile.

I remember reading about how the Famine could be traced to new technology at the time. Apparently there were seed potatoes being imported from America; some would have the blight but by the time they arrived in Ireland after the Atlantic crossing, these would have rotted and no longer be 'live'. Faster ships meant that blighted potatoes were landed and planted... with devastating results.
