STEREO catches an eruptive prominence | Phil Plait

• Via Jenny Winder on Google+ I saw this way cool video of an eruptive prominence on the Sun: a towering arc of plasma held aloft by the Sun’s magnetic fields. Sometimes these field lines are unstable, and the plasma can blast away from the Sun and out into space:

  This video was taken by one of NASA’s twin STEREO spacecraft; a pair of probes with one orbiting well ahead and the other behind the Earth. They stare at the Sun, literally giving us an angle on it we can’t get from our planet. Specifically this was from the STEREO Ahead spacecraft, and combines an ultraviolet view of the Sun itself together with a visible light portion that shows the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona.
  
  You can see the prominence form, rise up, and then erupt away into space over the course of one day, on October 6-7, 2012. Sometimes this material rains back down to the surface, and sometimes it escapes entirely. When it does the latter, it can flow outward, impact the Earth, and cause a geomagnetic storm. Usually those do us no harm, though if they get big they can disrupt satellites and potentially cause power outages. More likely they just create gorgeous aurorae which can be photographed from the ground.
  
  It’s actually rather amazing how many space-based eyes we have on the Sun and the amount of data they send back. The Sun is a feisty beast, and getting feistier as we approach the maximum part of its magnetic cycle. The more we observe it, the more we learn, and learning is always good.

The Big Endeavour

• VIMEO NOTES | A very special thanks to the City of Inglewood, Chief of Police Mark Fronterotta, Lieutenant James Madia, Sergeant Dirk Dewachter, and to the Men and Women of the Inglewood Police Department. None of this would have been possible without them.
  
  This project was only made possible by the help of a truly amazing and talented timelapse team which included; Joe Capra, Chris Pritchard, Brian Hawkins, Andrew Walker, Ryan Killackey and myself.
  
  This truly was a once in a lifetime opportunity that we are so happy and honored to have been be a part of.
  
  The endeavor started on Thursday night and went on until Sunday night, with very little sleep to no sleep. The only thing that kept us going was pure love of the art and adrenaline. One thing that stood out the most for me, while I was shooting, was the people of Los Angeles. It was so powerful to see the excitement on peoples faces and the pride of their home town. No matter how many times I would see the Shuttle it would never get old.
  
  This has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. My hope is that this film will show you the amount of dedicated people and teamwork that it took to get the Endeavour to its new home. Enjoy.

This vimeo, posted 17OCT12 at Bad Astronomy, so caught me by surprise, I LOL! It’s the music that did it. Björk sings a love song titled, It’s Oh So Quiet, that alternates music of a hushed cabaret setting with a BIG band sound of a Broadway show. You’re listening to some fun music while watching some natural wonders of Iceland: produced by a journalist with a sense of humor. I got a breath of fresh air!

  VIMEO NOTES. First you can see Gulfoss, the “Golden Fall”, it’s 70 m wide. After Geysir that is the biggest geyser in the world after Yellowstone.
  
  Passing by Landmannalaugar, we discover the Vatnajökull area : it’s the biggest glacier in Europe.
  
  The most impressive place is the Jökulsárlón where the glacier arrive in a lake that communicate with the ocean.
  
  At the end we see a DC-3 that landed in emergency in November 24th, 1973.
  
  I did those pictures in September 2012. I stayed 1 week in Iceland and we saw northern lights every nights!
