Wow. A blast from the past. I saw that movie when it came out on VHS. I still remember that Steve Vai guitar-off, at the end. Forgot the rest of the movie (almost 30 years ago..)

If you appreciate the blues, you'll enjoy Crossroads, which takes artistic license with the legend of Robert Johnson's midnight deal with the devil to make him a great bluesman. An enjoyable movie for sure. With wild-ass dancing during the aforementioned play-off. Stevie Vai's playing is suburb rock guitar work and the fellow playing the great bottleneck for Ralph Marccio was Ry Cooder, a monster of a master of his instrument.

Speaking of Ry Cooder, this is a great film:

I just watched Room, wow. Incredible movie, sometimes like a kick in the stomach. One of those films that makes you appreciate the medium - the way it uses the camera to show what the little boy sees. Sparse, bleak, understated. And terrifying, always the threat of what tomorrow might bring. Score was a bit irritating - that typical manipulative string arrangement that tells you how you should be feeling - but apart from that flawless. Highly recommended.

^^Agree. I was perplexed why the actress who played Ma won an Oscar, the film was nominated as best picture, but the young actor who played Jack wasn't even nominated; his performance was exceptional. But that's the strange politics of Hollywood, I guess.
Irish author Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay and the novel the film's based on. The novel is excellent & worth reading; the characters are more fleshed out and the narrative slowed down, of course.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014).
Wonderful, funny, madcap - and a lovely swipe at the ridicularities of Authoritarianism, to boot. A gem.

There's a Kickstarter for Alex Winter (director of "Deep Web & "FREAKED!!!!") to make a doc on Frank Zappa....
While he was getting with the Zappa family, Gail granted him FULL ACESS to the infamous 'VAULT"!
He may not have realized what he had just stepped into, 'coz he discovered the vault has vast quantities of material that may take him more than a year to slog through.....
So, while the initial 'Kickstarter' plan was just for the movie, it has now become an all out attempt to PRESERVE THE VAULT!!
Wanna help?
If you love Frank as mush as I do... I KNOW YOU DO!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi#Zersetzung
…the Stasi often used a method which was really diabolic. It was called Zersetzung, and it's described in another guideline. The word is difficult to translate because it means originally "biodegradation". But actually, it's a quite accurate description. The goal was to destroy secretly the self-confidence of people, for example by damaging their reputation, by organizing failures in their work, and by destroying their personal relationships. Considering this, East Germany was a very modern dictatorship. The Stasi didn't try to arrest every dissident. It preferred to paralyze them, and it could do so because it had access to so much personal information and to so many institutions.

Liquid Sky became one of my favorite movies only a few years after I retired this one from its long-running #1 spot:

If you're on FB look for a fellow named Nick Clement. He's a film buff and reviewer who digs out all kinds of movies that you either have forgotten about or never seen. He's fun. He's usually overwhelmingly positive, so when he does go negative it's pretty entertaining to watch. He went negative on Jurassic World.
