Do you mean when THE MAN calls people consumers, or when someone utilizes the term 'consumers' as a fitting/ironic commentary ascribed to a certain segment of the population?

My representatives like to call me a 'stakeholder' instead of a 'consumer' (while they cup my balls and tell me I'm so handsome.)

People, usually young women, using the word "obsessed". When they mean "I really like this new pair of shoes" they'll say "I'm obsessed with these shoes!"
It's everywhere. It needs to stop. Unless they really are obsessed, in which case they have a reason to be concerned about this.

Re: into the dustbin, where it belongs
Yeah, people seriously need to quit using the term "obsessed". The obsession in most cases does not originate from within, but from what you are told. Obsessions and compulsions are a real thing and it is quite likely that the obsession is due to a mental malady forced upon you at an early age. Obsessions are nothing to be proud of. Believe me, nobody who uses the term "obsessed" ever actually wants to be obsessed with intrusive thoughts and worries that appear to be real. I always "laugh" when people just say cheerily "oh, it's just my OCD" acting up. Could be. But typically it is not. OCD is awful and something someone afflicted with it does not want to speak of. To remember the feelings of fear is to kind of open a can of rotting "shit" you should have just thrown out.
OCD fucking sucks. Sadly, I handle it with light beer! But not so sad. . .
Far better than the hell of SSRIs.

There is no me. There is no you. There is all. There is no you. There is no me. And that is all. A profound acceptance of an enormous pageantry. A haunting certainty that the unifying principle of this universe is love. -- Propagandhi

"narcissism"
(as snap diagnosis and all-purpose put-down)
(as snap diagnosis and all-purpose put-down)
Gore Vidal wrote:A current pejorative adjective is narcissistic. Generally, a narcissist is anyone better looking than you are, but lately the adjective is often applied to those “liberals” who prefer to improve the lives of others rather than exploit them. Apparently, a concern for others is self-love at its least attractive, while greed is now a sign of the highest altruism. But then to reverse, periodically, the meanings of words is a very small price to pay for our vast freedom not only to conform but to consume.

"Is it just me, or..."
It's so grovellingly ingratiating.
