From the Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers' Warning, the first film about the Kogi people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta from 1990 is still very powerful and well worth your time:

Yea, that's likely right. I was aware of this while typing my 'free association' but didn't feel like changing the overall theme I was working with. That's how I roll sometimes. Irreverent (a euphemism for certain ahole tendencies, to be sure).JackRiddler » Wed Oct 26, 2016 3:24 pm wrote:Don't think so. No doubt that horror is a popular genre worldwide and across classes. I'm sure the most pronounced demographic variation is by age group, not class or nationality. You can't see people under bombs wanting to watch it, sure, but they're probably not getting to watch much of anything; it's not hard to imagine given groups that might not care for it. I find it boring with very few exceptions and those are meta (Cabin in the Woods). It's also depressing that it's such a big genre.Belligerent Savant » Tue Oct 25, 2016 11:25 pm wrote:.Perhaps horror as a genre is a luxury for those that needn't worry about experiencing such trauma regularly. And then there is Lunopolis, a movie whose link I posted in the breakaway civ secret space program thread.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: films of a certain quality
Hugo, thanks for bringing Lunopolis to our attention. The center of the image is awash with light from the camera of whoever filmed it which for me diminished greatly my enjoyment.
Here's a better version, but still not HD, http://putlockers.ch/watch-lunopolis-20 ... ocker.html Version 1, don't waste your time clicking on Version 2, as it's a Chinese site with no link to the flick that I could locate. MacAfee warns one who clicks on it's Putlocker link to beware.

Re: FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION: films of a certain quality
For those who haven't seen it, this is former Python Terry Jones in fighting form from his 2006 series, The Barbarians. Historical Revisionism at it's best and most necessary.
For example when Julius Caesar tells us that he fights in defence of the Celts, he is busy killing over a million of them at his own estimate and forcing another million into slavery. Jones demonstrates that his wars against the Celts were in fact resource wars, fought literally for gold, which the 'savages' had in fact been mining at over 400 sites across Europe and which the empire badly needed to pay it's bills.
More than that, the modern sense of words like Barbarian, or Goth have preserved the negative associations the Romans gave them. The Roman mythos is a story of massive self deception and savagery. On rare occasions when Roman writers allowed themselves a moment of reflection, the sudden change of tone is breathtaking.
A similar more recent rewriting of western history is ongoing.

Questions such as, why there are no great Roman mathematicians are central to the story. Rome stole or appropriated many or most of it's technical innovations and destroyed innumerable others, if they had been successful in their efforts to 'civilise' the world, all evidence of human achievement for six millennia before would almost certainly have been lost and without them, perhaps the cause of civilisation might have advanced beyond our dreams. They plunder, they slaughter, and they steal: this they falsely name Empire, and where they make a wasteland, they call it peace.
Tacitus

Thanks for the tip Vince, didn't know about it. What I get (happily enough) for not owning a television over the last couple of decades...vince » Sun Nov 27, 2016 3:22 pm wrote:Terry's series on the Crusades was good, too!

^^^ One of my fave American films. Alexander Payne also directed 'Citizen Ruth' (1996) another great political comedy.

In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent.
Ben and Leslie Cash have long lived largely off the grid with their offspring - Bodevan, Kielyr, Vespyr, Rellian, Zaja and Nai - in a cabin in the mountains of Washington state. The parents have passed their ideals to their children, namely socialism (in its various forms) and survivalism. With the former, Ben considers most of western society as being fascist, especially corporate America. With the latter, he figures that no one will or should be there for you, so you better learn how to take care of yourself in all its aspects.

Just started reading 'Never Let Me Go', Kazuo Ishiguro's dystopian novel about a group of children raised at a mysterious English boarding school called 'Hailsham'. I saw the film adaptation several years ago and it's one of the most powerful films I'll never watch again. Just too heartbreaking, about the human cost of science and medicine. Strong, poignant performances, especially actor Andrew Garfield's Tommy D.
