Just breakfasted on bread, banana and coffee. What I'm most envious of in this thread is Joe's homegrown home roasted coffee. That sounds like heaven. What is the worst coffee anyone has tasted btw? Top of the list for me was Starbucks in Manhattan - literally couldn't drink it. Runner's up, something served in a station café in Lille, and, again undrinkable, served in a waterside pavement café in Canary Wharf. Lovely ambiance, ok croissants, passable jam, crap beverage.

The other day I was shopping at Trader Joe's, and I picked up a package of their organic ground beef. There was a leak in it, and blood spattered all over me. Of course I was wearing a light-colored shirt. I put the meat back and haven't bought any meat since. It really grossed me out.

After seeing some photos on Facebook of a short film I worked on, "behind the scenes" stuff, there I was, untagged (thankfully) and looking way too heavy for my tastes. The belly has simply gotten too big. I finally have decided to lose it. Changed the diet completely. Determined to lose that damn thing for once and for all. Eating a lot of nuts, dried fruit, hummus, beans, eggs, that sort of thing. Feels good, although I am damned hungry for probably 70% of each day.

Breakfast was cold grilled zucchini, berries, and ripe tomato with fresh mozzarella, basil oil, and sea salt. It would be perfect if there was bacon.
It's not hard to eat well in August, I picked and ate my way through a raspberry patch the other day. There's an obvious seasonal pattern here. :basicsmile

I've recently mostly cut out carbs and sugar and dropped ten pounds pretty quickly.

I was just eating beans on toast. I have not cut out sugar and carbs.

beans on toast = delicious, nutritious(ish), filling and inexpensive! I love it (particularly the maple baked beans)

I'm not familiar with any maple-based foodstuffs, other than by seeing maple syrup on American films and television programmes.The only variant of baked beans I'm aware of is one which incorporates brown sauce, or comes in a tin with miniature and unpleasant sausages. But I just stick with the plain own-brand ones. Only time I eat sliced white, brown isn't right when toasted. All meals should involve bread. I never caught the local habit of accompanying ever meal with a plate of bread and butter, I just eat everything in sandwich form. Cheese, bacon, chips, beans, etc..Everything but fruit and butter, which only go with toast.

So we've come full circle from a year ago back to beans again, guess you found some acceptable brand. :wink

There's a very good brand of baked beans that is made in my home state and only seems to be sold locally. When I visit again, I'll pick some up in order to try on toast. Haven't ever thought about it before, but I guess it would be comfort food.

You can make your own, (beans à la Heinz) its not difficult, but takes a long cooking time. The french do not understand beans on toast, and the beans in tomato sauce you can buy here are nothing like. You get the recipe by looking on the back of the can at the ingredients list and improvising from it.

I'm confused, have you been eating beans with something other than toast?

But yes, the own-brand ones at the co-op, but not the Simply Value range ones, are nice and thick again.

My first and only (and maybe even last) attempt at making baked beans from scratch was an abject failure! Long cooking time? I'll say. I pre-soaked them for 16 hours or something like that, then baked for a whole day and they were STILL hard!

Well, I think you have basically the same cuisine, maple syrup, grits, corn dogs, jambaliya, and so on. Nachos, which Homer Simpson likes. The Americans happen to make more television programmes, and Canadian productions are often covertly American. But I've never tasted any of those things, because I don't have an adventurous palette. Not even PIzza. Had a burger once. Didn't like it.

Corn dogs seems to be saveloys. Never had one of those, either.

Haha... I had pancakes with maple syrup for brekkie and a corn dog at the Fair on Saturday, home-made jambalaya for dinner on Sunday, and nachos with jalapeno jack cheese late last night. Terribly exotic.

Grits? Most Canadians wouldn't know what grits are. Southern US specialty.

Earlier in the week had a greek salad with sheep's-milk feta, ripe cherries and toasted pumpkin seeds. My gal doesn't like black olives and the cherries are an oddly successful substitute... with a good balsamic the cherries make for a complex burgundy flavour.

Baked beans, I like the bread on the side, buttered with blackstrap molasses.
