I think there was another thread about the new movie, but I couldn't find it, so here I am.

I was very afraid to see Johnny Depp's new movie but yesterday after drinking all afternoon and a lot of nagging from the family, finally sat and watched it. It was a pleasant surprise, it really didn't have any 'triggers' in it, was a nice twist to the original and as always, Johnny Depp did some spectacular acting. This is not to say I'd tell everyone to watch it, as different 'themes' are stronger to each programming, for example I would NEVER watch anything that had to do with the Wizard of Oz but this was a pretty good movie and not at all the 'reconditioning' type that I thought it would be.

Now maybe I'll get toasted enough to watch Shudder Island

A bunch of us from work went to go see it together on the 3d iMax screen. Which for some reason in Massachusetts means going to a furniture store called 'Jordans'.

I have mixed emotions about the film.

I did like the ending, where the caterpillar, having built his chrysalis in Wonderland, arrives in Alice's world to be her blue winged consigliere.
That his advice was for Alice to divest some of the portfolio she inherited from her father and participate in the East India Stock Dividend Redemption Act in order to launch her own import/export business was a nice touch.

In a third T.R., called "Dear Alice" one Scientologist keeps repeating lines from Alice in Wonderland while his partner "acknowledges him."

For example, one asks "Do cats eat bats?", or says "Imperial Fiddlesticks" and the other says "thank you" or "groovy." (It is said that in one eastern city, they decided to send an undercover policeman to investigate Scientology. The policeman spent several days repeating lines from Alice in Wonderland and being thanked for it.{22})

Also, little known fact, a few years ago, before he was famous as a human bear baiter, Jeremy Kyle had a late night radio show which was the same sort of thing but without his ugly mug. And every Christmas they did an odd adult pantomime called "Pussy in Boots".

But juxtaposing Alice with pop culture speaks the modern lingo.


From the book, the Disney cartoon, or the Burton film we have a notion of who Alice is;
we also have an inherent association with pop culture — today’s nursery rhymes are not transmitted by nanny but by TV, radio, or Youtube.


Six different actresses play the role of Alice, a decision that reflects the questions of identity inherent in coming of age.
“It’s to show the different aspects of a girl and her consciousness going through this journey,’’ Shea says.


“Every time she eats or drinks, instead of getting bigger or smaller, she changes her identity, her physical being.
The effect it has is it paints this mosaic-like portrait of a modern teenage girl and a teenage identity crisis.’’


Amidst the singing to Lady Gaga and dancing to Gwen Stefani, this fast-paced and colorful take on Alice’s journey appears to be filling a gap in the Moscow theatre scene.


It feels like this poppy yet meaningful production is going to take Moscow by storm.
