What a coincidence!
(Some of us have found psy-ops in them thar hills.)

And they describe '24's' torture meister Jack Bauer as..."inspirational."

I think the Cookie Monster has an eating disorder and poor impulse control. I can't stand "24" so I have no comment on Jack Bauer, although Kiefer seems to have a drinkie problem and poor impulse control as well.

I'll join the discussion when the brothers Karamazov show up... no plans to rattle on about Fonzie or Ralph Kramden.

Must you make yourself such an easy target, Hugh?

If you took the time to listen to the essay about Jack Bauer, you'd see that it was very mocking and critical of "patriots" who love explosions, power tools, and macho "heroes" like Bauer. But actually listening to something before criticizing it... well, that's not the way of the manatee, is it?

Lazy and sloppy drive-by accusations of psyops -- that's your style.

And I find it amusing that someone is impersonating our beloved manatee on the NPR blog:

What a coincidence! Some of us were analyzing the use of fictional characters for government propaganda before this NPR 'In Character' series started.

66 years ago, during World War II, the official government propaganda organ called the Office of War Information regulated Hollywood's movie scripts in the name of national interest. In the 1950s the CIA formed a secret ministry of culture called the Congress for Cultural Freedom, and TV scripts were reviewed by State Department, Pentagon, and CIA.

You all might consider viewing TV and movies and listening to radio with this historical background in mind. Then you might not consider it a coincidence that Jack Bauer is desensitizing Americans to torture and 'J.A.G.' bored us to tears long before the legislation called the Military Commisions Act of 2006 supported military tribunals.

Oddly, just as the House Select Committee on Assassinations was about to release its final report on the shooting of JFK, America was waiting to find out 'who shot JR' on a TV show called...'Dallas.' Isn't that a wild coincidence?

TV and movies (and radio ahem) are some of the most useful tools of shaping public opinion. Think about it.

To clarify my jibe above more seriously; This is not a coincidence because coincidences involve two very specific and apparently related things happening at the same time, not two very broad and unrelated things.

Also always sad to spot a note of genuine paranoia coming through in Hugh's posts. Or am I misreading it? He does seem to be implying that NPR started a whole series in reaction to his posts on the internet.

[Hugh Manatee Wins]

Maybe some culture war sniffers on the internet noticed that 'Star Wars' has been outed as psy-ops designed to reverse Vietnam Syndrome and make war 'cool' again to kids.

NPR just announced on air Sat. 2/16/08 that their 'Morning Edition' news program on Mon. 2/18/08 would feature a segment on Darth Vader from 'Star Wars.'

This would be to help hype this NPR counterpropaganda show, In Character, by exploiting the extra listeners on the Mon. 2/18/08 holiday called 'Presidents Day.'

So Yahoo's front page perception managers are linking to a 10 day-old segment on 'Cookie Monster' as a lure to the next day's NPR 'Darth Vader' segment.

A perfect analogy of both how inter-related psy-ops marketing is and how PBS is used to keep kids watching educational TV for all the other war-nography which TV is used for.
