Matthew Pearson, The Ottawa Citizen

It's no wonder Karina Hébert rents a car now whenever she travels to Montreal.

The Ottawa public servant was a frequent Greyhound rider until a gruesome incident in late January changed all that.

Her story came to light yesterday in the aftermath of the stabbing and decapitation of 22-year-old Tim McLean.

Ms. Hébert says she was travelling through a snowstorm on a mid-afternoon Greyhound bus from Montreal to Ottawa on Jan. 22 when a man who had locked himself in the washroom began using a razor blade to peel off his own scalp.

Ms. Hébert said she had noticed the scruffy man in the bus station, fidgeting and talking to himself. When she boarded the bus, she saw him sitting in the back row, adjacent to the washroom.

The man later barricaded himself in the washroom for more than an hour, forcing the driver to pull off Highway 417 onto Highway 138, east of Casselman.

Ms. Hébert said the driver tried to talk the man into coming out of the washroom, but at first the man refused.

That's when Ms. Hébert said something shocking happened.

"The guy opened the door and his face was completely, completely covered in blood. It was kind of like a horror movie. The only thing that stood out was the whites of his eyes," she said.

The man was holding his still-attached scalp above his head, which she later learned from police he had begun cutting away at the back of his head below the crown.

When the bus driver told the man he was going to call for help, Ms. Hébert said the man re-entered the washroom and locked the door.

The driver then told the 17 remaining passengers to get off the bus.

When Ontario Provincial Police officers arrived, Ms. Hébert said several boarded the bus and dismantled the door after the man refused to come out.

The man was also Tasered.

Horrified passengers stood by as police dragged him out of the bus. He was covered in blood and his pants were around his ankles, Ms. Hébert said.

A police officer later told Ms. Hébert that by the time officers got the man out of the washroom, he had cut all the way around his scalp and down to the bridge of his nose or immediately below.

Still, she said the man did not make a sound and remained conscious.

The bus was towed away and, after a three-hour delay, passengers were back on the road.

When they arrived in Ottawa, Ms. Hébert said Greyhound refunded riders the equivalent of a one-way, Montreal-to-Ottawa fare.

Ms. Hébert said she didn't complain to the bus company at the time, out of respect for the man and his family.

But after reading the company's statements this week following the killing near Brandon, Man., she decided to speak out.

"They say it's a rare occasion, well, it's not. Things like that obviously happen more often than we like to think."

That's just too much...a guy pretty much rips off his face on another greyhound in front of one of the witnesses of the new incident?

I'm guessing a mis-reading of the somewhat confusing headline "Bus rider recalls another gruesome incident" which does indeed imply they saw this latest one too even tho this is clearly not the case.

That was my first impression from the headline as well.

let it roll down the highway

Postby annie aronburg » Sun Aug 03, 2008 3:21 pm

The Saturday edition of the Vancouver Sun quoted a friend of the victim as saying she received a text message from him indicating some passengers on the bus were on MDA.

Not finding it on-line though.
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

The dismembered body of a 17-year-old British girl has been found in a suitcase in Brazil.

Police say Cara Marie Burke was murdered by an ex-boyfriend she had threatened to expose as a drug-dealer.

Her torso was found in a suitcase dumped on a riverbank on Monday, but her head, arms and legs were missing after being thrown into the water.

Man beheads girlfriend on Greek island

Posted 1 hour 38 minutes ago

A 31-year-old Greek man beheaded his girlfriend and carried her head around the popular tourist island of Santorini before he was arrested, police said on Sunday (local time).

The man, who police said had psychological problems, injured a police officer and two women while trying to escape arrest after killing the 25-year-old teacher on Greece's picturesque island.

"He was walking around, carrying her head and telling the astonished villagers not to stop him," a police official said.

Also, there was the Brazillian kid who dismembered his 17 year old
UK girlfriend the other day.

Would be pretty cryptic if all these sort of events happened relatively within the same few hours or the same moments.

thousands of things like this happen everyday, all over the world. they just don't draw the attention of the western media except in waves.

to me this means that something that doesn't happen everyday all over the world is probably ALSO happening somewhere, oh, right about now...

just my two cents.

Excellent timing for your speculation:

Two men armed with knives and grenades ambushed a military police unit in Kashgar in China’s majority Muslim far northwest on Monday, killing 16 border patrol officers and wounding 16 others before being subdued and arrested, according to Chinese state media.

Officials labeled the incident an act of terrorism and suggested the culprits were associated with a murky separatist movement that is seeking independence for China’s Uighur minority, a Turkic-speaking people who dominate Xinjiang Province, where the attack took place.

Romany that reminds me of a story I once heard, via the Darwin Awards i think.

A bunch of blokes were on a drinking binge somewhere in Eastern Europe. They had a chainsaw. One cut off his hand as a dare, one cut off his arm and then one, not to be outdone cut off his own head.

I dunno if its true, or just an urban myth, but there you have it.

can anyone explain how a married couple in their late 30s early 40s can emigrate to Canada from China, not even speaking the language, yet I, an American citizen working in the IT field doesn't seem to have enough "points" to even bother applying last time I looked at the emigration website? Isn't that kinda odd? Were they admitted as refugees?

You're probably correct--they probably did immigrate as refugees. Canada is still short of people and has a humane immigration system, in contrast to the way the United States has been going lately.

But look at the Canadian provincial immigration systems. Unlike the United States, Canada has separate national and state immigration systems. If you're willing to start in some of the more remote areas, I think it's almost certain you could qualify somehow.

The last thing we need are more IT professionals.
Cabinet-makers, plumbers, butchers, truck drivers, maybe a few more doctors, but we raise all the techies we need from scratch. No offense, eh?

Accused killer chatted with victim’s co-worker before decapitation
WINNIPEG -- The seeds for Tim McLean's brutal murder on board a Greyhound bus last week may have been planted when the man accused of his murder, Vince Li, spent nearly an hour chatting up the victim's co-worker during their ride through western Manitoba, the Winnipeg Free Press has reported.

Li, 40, took a seat at the front of the bus beside a woman named Stacy after getting on board in Brandon. The pair chatted and were even seen smoking together during a rest stop.

As the bus resumed its ill-fated journey towards Winnipeg, Li suddenly moved to the back of the bus and sat beside McLean, who was listening to his headphones and apparently asleep.

Moments later, McLean was being repeatedly stabbed until he was decapitated. Horrified passengers fled the bus but managed to lock the killer inside the bus.

McLean's family and friends don't believe Li's change-of-seating was a coincidence. And they question why he was charged with second-degree murder and not first-degree murder, which indicates planning and premeditation.

"I have this unbelievably strong feeling that him sitting beside Stacy had something to do with this," McLean's former girlfriend, Alexandra Storey, told the Free Press in an exclusive interview Monday.

Tim and Stacy had become friends while working together at various western Canadian fairs through North American Midway Entertainment.

They were travelling together to Winnipeg -- although seated separately in different areas of the bus -- and had planned to meet up with a mutual friend in the city before all heading to British Columbia.

McLean's loved ones now desperately want to speak with Stacy -- her last name is not known to them -- to find out more about her dealings with Li on the bus.

They only know that she quickly returned to B.C. after McLean's killing, and presumably after an interview with police.

A call to North American Midway Entertainment seeking information about the woman wasn't returned on Monday.

Ms. Storey is also haunted by a series of text messages McLean sent to her as he made his way through Manitoba. Her ex-boyfriend -- to whom she remained very close -- mentioned that some people were doing ecstasy on the bus.

Some medical experts say the combination of a powerful stimulant drug such as ecstasy, combined with pre-existing mental health conditions, could trigger a violent episode.

Ms. Storey says she isn't buying it.

"Even if he was doing drugs, it wouldn't make him do something like that. There's no excuse," she said.
"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
