New clues identify zodiac killer?

Postby monster » Fri Aug 29, 2008 1:39 am

It sucks that there isn't video available through the news website yet - I saw the story just now on the news, it has much more of an impact to hear the voice recording, see the bloody knife, the black hood with zodiac symbol, and rolls of film which the reporter said showed unidentified murder scenes.

News Clues Exposed In Bay Area Zodiac Killer Case

The zodiac killer attacked at least eight people, terrorizing the Bay Area and taunting police in the 60's and 70's. The FBI has confirmed to CBS13 they are now running laboratory tests on some items that may link a suspect to the zodiac killer.

The evidence was given to the FBI by a man who also claims he recently found the disguise worn by the zodiac killer during one of his attacks.

"The identity of the zodiac killer is Jack Torrance. He's my stepfather," says Dennis Kaufman.

Years of research compiled in a tiny room and eight years of Dennis Kaufman's life consumed attempting to prove the only father he's known since he was five-years-old is the zodiac killer.

"This a handwriting comparison I did," says Kaufman.

He believes the similarities are too strong to be a coincidence.

"The composite is a dead ringer," says Kaufman.

A resemblance that is undeniable between pictures of Jack Torrance and descriptions of the zodiac.

Dennis also claims his stepfather, in a taped phone conversation, indirectly admitted being the zodiac killer.

"If I wrote a book and said I think my stepfather is the zodiac killer they wouldn't believe me," says Kaufman.

Jack Torrance died in 2006. Dennis claims that while going through his dead stepfather's belongings, there were disturbing findings including a knife still covered with what could possibly be dried blood.

"It could be a knife he BBQ with or a knife he murdered someone with," says Kaufman.

Jack also left behind rolls of undeveloped film. Dennis plans to hand over the film to the FBI. On one of the rolls Dennis did develop, there were numerous gruesome images.

"Appeared to be people who were murdered," explains Dennis.

Just recently, Dennis remembered his stepfather asked him several times about the old PA system which led Dennis to take it apart.

"When I first opened it up that did affect me. My heart skipped a couple of beats when I saw it," he says.

The material folded and tucked inside, Dennis believes may unmask the zodiac killer.

"It was a black hood with a zodiac on it," Dennis explains.

Dennis claims this is the hood worn during the vicious 1968 Lake Berryessa attack, which is the possible key evidence connecting his stepfather to the killings.

He also believes there are dozens more victims which were never linked to the zodiac, including Dennis' own mother who he claims was suffocated.

"She sat there and told me Jack was trying to kill her and I didn't listen. I can only imagine how she felt. Imagine how scary that would be. That is what kept me going this whole time," says Dennis.

The FBI confirmed they are running DNA tests on items given to them by Dennis.

Dennis says they are postage stamps sent to him by his stepfather. Authorities are trying to get DNA profile of Jack Torrance to compare to A DNA profile of the zodiac killer. The FBI told CBS13 they could get those results back any day.

Edit: The first google link for this guy says he's a crackpot, though. In fact, so do lots of other links. Maybe he's nuts.

Well it was a very compelling local news story, but the more I search the more it looks like this guy is probably wrong.

In fact the hard-core amateur sleuths have a new fav suspect: Richard Joseph Gaikowski

March 26, 2008

In case you've been living in a cave the last few weeks, there's a new Zodiac suspect on the block and he's the best of them all. His name is Richard Joseph Gaikowski, a former newspaper editor from San Francisco.

Sorry for posting about the zodiac, I know there are hardcore forums dedicated to it and it doesn't really fit RI. I just thought the story on my local news was a big break, but it might not be.

Thanks for posting this. Bizarre........

Apparently, Kaufman is/was a member of a 'satanic' church. I'm not sure if it is La Vey's or not.

Here is his own website:

And I think this is definitely RI material :)

The Zodiac killings is right up RI alley to a tee.

I loved the film by David Fincher and always thought this was an intriguing case.

I remember in 1991 the news said the Zodiac had been found but he died of cander. Now there's new suspect/s. Who knows if they'll ever figure out who he was.

This is a fine subject for RI monster.(Happy 3rd Anniversary btw!)

Maybe the guy does have something. Is it confirmed he actually turned over materials to the FBI or was he just blowing smoke? "Jack Torrance" does sound like a name a person might throw out to pull a hoax, though.

so, that movie's pretty good, eh? i picked it up the other day and looked at the box, didn't rent it though.

maybe i'll rent that and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer this weekend. I just finished reading McGowan's Programmed to Kill a couple of weeks ago, so i'd like to check those films out.

Well I'm glad they made the video available. I don't know how much of it is true... but the photos of murdered people and the black hood w/zodiac symbol, if authentic, would close this case, I assume. I don't know what tests the FBI are running (there is no Zodiac DNA to compare to, but there might be victim DNA to compare to the bloody knife.)

Me too, great movie. I remember being grossed out by a scene or two, but I'm glad I stuck with it.

Thanks (what a weird thing to notice :)). I've considered creating a new username a few times, because people might think I am a monster. But it was just the name of the energy drink I was drinking when I registered. I have zero capacity for inventing clever nicknames.

The FBI is really investigating - which doesn't mean it's not a hoax, but at least they're taking it seriously. The guy turned over several rolls of undeveloped film to the FBI. On the one roll he did develop, there were murder scenes.

If the guys name really is Jack Torrance, and he really is the killer, then we have a weird synchronism on our hands ...
