Four police officers shot to death in Lakewood in apparent ambush

By Steve Miletich and Sara Jean Green

Seattle Times staff reporters

Four police officers were shot to death in the Lakewood area about 8:15 a.m. by a scruffy looking man who walked into a coffee shop and fired multiple gunshots.

All four were pronounced dead by medics inside Forza Coffee at 11410 Steele Street South, said Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.

"It's carnage out front everywhere," Troyer said, describing the front of the coffee shop. "It's like a bad horror movie, it's horrible."

The names of the officers, all of whom were in uniforms, were not released until relatives are notified.

Most of the officers worked for the same agency, Troyer said. But the agencies weren't disclosed.

Three of the four officers have been identified and investigators were unsure of the identify of the fourth, Troyer said.

Troyer said police were searching for a black man in his 20s or 30s, between 5-feet-7 inches and 5-feet-10-inches, who fled the scene.

The man was wearing a black coat and blue jeans, Troyer said.

A second suspect might have been with the man, Troyer said.

Detectives were preparing search warrants for multiple locations, he said.

The shootings come about a month after the killing of Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton, who was gunned down while sitting his patrol car Oct. 31.

The four officers, whose marked patrol cars were outside the shop, were on waiting to work a day shift, Troyer said.

Police cordoned off the shooting scene and were interviewing baristas and employees of the coffee shop who were badly shaken by what they witnessed, Troyer said.

Troyer said they are not looking at gang suspects.

"For a gang member to do something like this would be way out of the box because a gang wouldn't want to draw attention to themselves," he said.

A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.

I hate authority as much as the next guy. But RIP. This is very sad and getting to be quite a bit terrifying.

Oh my fucking god, are you celebrating the murder of four police officers?

I guess if there's one place a scumbag can be a scumbag, it's the internet.

Anyway.

I was wondering at first if it was drug cartel violence imported from Mexico, because that's what it sounds like. And that's terrifying to contemplate.

Good catch captain.

Note the locale:

Essentially on McChord AFB.

Essentially on an air force base? That is pretty bizarre... and it's right after Fort Hood. And the guy hasn't been caught yet?
Reminds of the "black liberation army," a group in the seventies that murdered cops and i think was a government-supported provocateur group (as were Weather Underground and SLA).
If it were Mexican cartel-related, though... that would seem to be a whole new chapter in the Drug War. We'll see who get charged for the crimes.

Claiming no connection here whatsoever, just witnessed this recently and saw it as an over reacton related to the shooting of Officer Brenton. Still getting used to the rifles.

It seems the perps injected a significant amount of chaff into the preliminary investigation and manhunt. Multiple fake 911 calls were made claiming responsibility -- sending all units, one would imagine, into a tizzy. I saw it live on the news, stated by the chief, no link.

I also believe I saw a dude behind the sheriff as he was giving one of his many press conferences today, look to be a "scruffy looking black male", and grin somewhat satisfiedly. Then exited the scene.

Also, the Lakewood police are apparently accusing KING5 news of interfering with the investigation. Helicopter something or another.

(Just the latest)

Suspect At Large... Sheriff's Spokesman: 'This Was More Of An Execution'
Image
PARKLAND, Wash. — One of four police officers killed in an ambush at a coffee house Sunday fought with the gunman and may have wounded him before the officer died just outside the doorway, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer told reporters that investigators were asking area medical providers to report any people wounded by gunshots.

Troyer said investigators believe two of the officers were shot dead while sitting in the shop, and a third was killed after standing up. The fourth apparently struggled with the gunman out the doorway and "gave up a good fight," getting off a few shots before he was either shot there or succumbed to earlier wounds...

The Forza Coffee Shop, part of a popular local chain, is on a side street near McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, about 35 miles south of Seattle. The shop is in a small retail center alongside two restaurants, a cigar store and a nail salon.

Brad Carpenter, founder and owner of Forza Coffee, said his staff was OK and being interviewed by police, and that his main concern was for the families of the police officers.

"I'm a retired police officer, so this really hits close to home for me," said Carpenter, of nearby Gig Harbor.

Troyer said the Lakewood officers were two blocks outside their jurisdiction, and the coffee shop was a popular place for officers from surrounding jurisdictions to meet and share information.

Streets around the coffee shop were blocked off late Sunday morning, and a police helicopter hovered over a large crowd of investigators. TV video showed police taking possession of a pickup truck parked in a grocery store in Parkland.

"We are looking at some people. We are looking at some cars. We are looking at some residences," Troyer said.

Troyer said investigators were checking surveillance video from multiple sources, trying to identify a possible getaway car.

Dave Gabrielson, a clerk at Foot Mart about a block away from the coffee shop, told the newspaper all was quiet when he opened the store at 8 a.m. About 30 minutes later, "All of a sudden a million cops were zooming up and down the road," Gabrielson said.

He said he saw officers bring a police dog into a nearby apartment complex.

Last month, Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton was shot and killed Halloween night as he was sitting in a cruiser with trainee Britt Sweeney. Sweeney was grazed in the neck.

Authorities say the man charged with that shooting also firebombed four police vehicles in October as part of a "one-man war" against law enforcement. Christopher Monfort, 41, was arrested after being wounded in a firefight with police days after the Seattle shooting. He remains hospitalized in stable condition, the hospital said Sunday...

For any synchromystics out there, the name of the coffee shop "FORZA", means "strength" or "forcefulness". I flashed on that after reading that bit above.

Brad Carpenter, founder and owner of Forza Coffee, said his staff was OK and being interviewed by police, and that his main concern was for the families of the police officers.

"I'm a retired police officer, so this really hits close to home for me," said Carpenter, of nearby Gig Harbor.

Just thought to check the copycat effect blog. Here's Loren Coleman's bit:

http://copycateffect.blogspot.com/2009/ ... mbush.html

Forza Ambush
Forza is an Italian word that means "force" or "strength." It is used in shouting yells at football (soccer) games in Europe, loosely, as "Forward," as in "Forward *name of team*."

On November 29, 2009, an ambush of police officers occurred at a Forza coffee shop in the USA.

The four police officers were shot and killed Sunday morning in what authorities called a targeted ambush at the shop. The Forza Coffee Company is near McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington State, specifically in Lakewood, about 60 kilometres south of Seattle.

Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says that the officers were in a coffee establishment, near 116th Street and Steele Street, on the east side of the Air Force base at about 8:30 a.m.

(In the wake of the Fort Hood shooting, no media speculation has occurred as to the relationship to this location and the previous multiple shooting. The military backstory to this incident, however, might turn out to be significant.)

Troyer says the officers were preparing for their shift when a suspect or suspects "walked in with a handgun, opened fire multiple times and then fled the scene," said Troyer. Police are searching for a male suspect (maybe two?) and interviewing witnesses.

Troyer called it an "ambush."

"We hopefully will have answers, but there is nothing more we can tell you," Troyer said. "That's as cold-hearted as it is."
Troyer would not say what agency the officers were from until families could be notified.

The suspects are an AfricanAmerican male and a Caucasian male. Troyer said one of the suspects are 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10, 20s to 30s, scruffy appearance, with one seen wearing a black coat and blue jeans.

He said they are looking to see if there is any surveillance cameras that may have caught the suspect or suspects on video.

This particular person, Maurice Clemons is still at large. The mugshot is not current.

Anybody wanna take on the "googly eyed" thing again? There is something up. Let me repeat, there is something up!

(No racism here)

Not that he is "googly eyed". But the eyes are strange, no?

This shit is going plaid. You know, ludicrous speed.
