Any health professionals on here

Postby Percival » Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:10 pm

I got a big bottle of b12 for my cat from the vet because she was low on b12 and I gave her the injections for a month like the vet said and then she said no more after that but I still have more than a half of a big bottle of the b12 left and a whole box of syringes. I used to get b12 shots from a alternative health professional and they really made a difference in my life, one shot once a week so I am wondering is this b12 for my cat I got from the vet the same kind humans would use. The ingredients appear to be the same. I hate to waste the stuff...there is at least 6 months worth left.
He left in a huff and he is back even huffier.

Percival,

One of my roommates works with animals and veterinarians. She said her vet would absolutely caution that you not use this on yourself (though, I'd think, as professionals, they're probably mandated to do this, and I've read about vets treating themselves with antibiotics from their own practice). Years ago I also gave myself B-12 injections and remember them being the color of cranberry juice--she said it's the same with the B-12 they've given dogs (she'd never heard of cats having a problem). Of course the dosage for a 5 pound cat is very different from that for an adult male.

She didn't know how to find out if the B-12 for human and animal prescriptions are one and the same, but said she wouldn't do it. Speaking for myself, tempting as it is (and I sure would be tempted), I'd also be very hesitant to inject materials prescribed to my pet........

Yea good information and thanks for looking in to it. I am certainly not going to be rash about it and will do more research to make absolutely sure it is the same and if it is then there is no harm in using it as I do know the proper dose and frequency for myself from prior experience. B12 shots can be helpful in many ways but I agree, proceed with caution is the best course of action here.
