The fish, the bird, and the tree made it to the IRL Saloon late Friday night. By the time the out-of-towners retired, the tree needed help from her bartender to sit at the counter. He poured her another as she sat sad and glassy-eyed, and apparently tried to relate a story about librarians.

Wish ya'll could have been there, well, up until that point because it only got worse after. Luckily the damage was mostly internal.

Thank you for the toasts!

I need about 24 oz. of coffee with two nicotine lozenges and some amphetamine stirred into it, or a ghost-writer.

This song is too quiet on Youtube, but place your trust in my opinion here - it is a fine thing loudly played:

It is nice to be back in a pub where the folk can understand me, if only because i'm typing instead of talking.

For good or ill, I'll also drink to that. Remember the UK and other NATO forces in Afghanistan too (especially the Scots). It is a horrific thing they are engaged in, but most of them didn't choose it, any more than we did. Hate the sin, not the sinner, as they say.

Neither did the Iraquis or Afghans choose these wars, so I'll drink to them as well.

Have to go out for another bottle. Virtual booze is nice and all, but it doesn't make me drunk, as real booze has, and shall again.

OK, hmmmmm, Ahab, very nice response. Just a note here to say that the Saloon, being a place where I feel home most of the time, isn't the right venue for jingoism, per se, so if we can have done with that subject in these posts, I will be grateful.

And in effort to keep to my own advice there, I did try to restrain myself but I am about to fail... I can't leave it at that without repeating that I've never been either safe or free within the US, and that is not hyperbole, it is straight on truth. Having been conditioned into slavery since early childhood and threatened against fleeing on a regular basis my whole life, with the majority of this activity funded by your generous tax money, constitutional rights, no matter how hollow now for most, have never applied on a basic level to some, and others to varying degrees. The US is for selected peoples like East Germany or Soviet Russia was for its citizens, only this current arrangement hides in plain sight of all. I rub shoulders daily with others who have completely different experiences and assumptions about life in the US. So no soldier fights for me, instead he fights for my oppressors, and in these very complicated times, I'd suggest no one size fits all in any society.

I'll raise a glass to passions, however, humans never seem to be lacking in those.

Now I'm gonna toast Mac, who let a good ole temper tantrum fly today. Here's to hoping everyone knows only familiarity can breed that kind of contempt!

A fair point, well made. I drink to the soldiers as individual people - they are human, after all - and most of them are scared, lonely, and decieved, like the rest of us. But of course I do not drink to their mission, or to their masters.

Project Willow wrote:with the majority of this activity funded by your generous tax money

No no. Not me. I know you are making a broader point, but just to be clear, I don't pay taxes to the US government, and I pay a bare minimum to my own, in the hopes that it will be used to help people in need. I am quite fond of the present Scottish government. They are opposed to the Westminster govt.which is all I can ask for.

Um, to be honest, though, I'll drink to just about anything. I'll be having one for Mac now as well. Ach, I'll make it a double.

I know what you mean, though, about never actually being safe or free, even in a land explicitly founded on those principles. The Soviet comparison is right. I wish I could help somehow. Maybe one day I will be able to do something to alleviate some suffering in the world. But I am a coward and a weakling - which complicates things.

Actually, make it a triple, please.

I will say again, Ahab, you are precious. Can't find anything in what you've said with which to disagree. Enjoy yourself! I hope to be living a hop and a jump away from the Isles in the not too distant future.
