Laodicean, thanks for expanding the world of pleasant things known to me. Because I didn't even know Percy Sledge even recorded "Dark End of the Street," which is one of my very, very favorite songs....

....that I can't ever think of without thinking of this one:

It's a topical rather than a musical association, obvs. Anyway, here's to you.

And incidentally, take it from me: When you love a woman, you do not have to sleep out in the rain if that's the way she says it ought to be. Though Percy Sledge sounds very persuasive when he asserts otherwise, I totally admit.

No one executed for their crime, the officer points out, has ever killed again.

"It seems to be quite effective," he says. "Nobody's heard from Gary Gilmore," the first person executed after the Supreme Court lifted a ban on capital punishment in 1976. Gilmore died by firing squad at the Utah State Prison in 1977.

But only because I'm giving up on finding the Dave Edmunds version. Or a Rockpile live version. Or, I don't know, I'd even take Billy Bremner, he'd be fine. Ex-Flamin' Groovies are good, too though. And it's been days. I gotta move on.

There is a consolation prize, however. Because in the process of not finding the Mr. Edmunds rendition, I came across this, an entirely different and really not-half-bad song with the same title.

Okey-Doke. Off to dig up the Shirelles classic now.

Though perhaps it's better known to present-day Americans via the cover version originally released here on Introducing....The Beatles.
