Well, another one bites the dust....my boyfriend thought that he died years ago...I think that was when his illness took a bad turn...a true original was the Captain. He will be missed. I'm gonna go listen to 'Golden Birdies' now...

I like that Peel doesn't hide his enthusiasm and love for the Captains and his work.

A highlight of my civic development was in the 8th grade (circa 1971) when a teacher sent me skipping to the principal's office for possessing "obscene" Captain Beefheart lyrics (Trout Mask Replica, as I recall), which I had copied down from the record and was sharing among my classmates.

The principal looked confused by the lyrics and just advised me to try to humor, rather than antagonize, that particular teacher. (The one who would take a whole geology class period to tell us about "patriotism" and warn us explicitly about our "Permanent Records" that would hound the lives of troublemakers like me.)

When I was about 14 or 15, I discovered my parent's copy of a compilation record called 'Zapped'. It was all groups that Frank Zappa had signed to his label, Bizzare Records. 'Old Fart At Play' was on this record. I remember listening to it over and over, and writing all the words down. And sharing them with friends. This was how I discovered The Captain. And I still have the record!

Beefheart sang Willie the Pimp on Zappa's otherwise instrumental Hot Rats. Zappa produced Captain Beefheart albums (Trout Mask Replica, etc). Zappa did the album Bongo Fury that had Beefheart as a volcalist and otherwise pounder on things. I was fortunate in the mid 70s to see the MOI at Winterland where Capt. Beafheart and the Magic Band were the warm up band and Beefheart was on stage for Willie and Bongo Fury pieces and pandamonium.

'Willie The Pimp' is on Zapped too! The presence of The Captain makes it my fave Zappa song.

That's cool that you got to see him...being a young ol' 35 yo, I missed out on that...

I'm glad about the good times tho so cheers too.



Once me and two friends sat around for 3 hours listening to the song Mirror Man and tripping off our heads on mushrooms.

For some reason the CD kept jumping around, so the one song lasted forever. But we were all tripping so hard that every now and then one of us would say "This has been going on for a bit long hasn't it"

And someone else would say:"Nah - its a long song", and then we'd talk for another 40 minutes till someone else did it.

I think I've told that story before...
